What do you guys prefer?

I am looking at the herkules line.
I heard get a larger size than your usual to have more '"breathing" room. I like the 16 wt. herk bibs, don't know what the matching jacket should be (is it also herk?).

Also any local places where I could try on sizes?
Local meaning in town or S shore.

Any help is appreciated.

I have had mine now for 10 years!! But they run reel big!! I got 3X the bibs are good and roomy but I can fit 2 of me in the jacket.

Both R&R & Monahans have them.
Fishingfreak just picked up a pair of knock offs, pretty much identical to Grundens for less than 1/2 the $, he got them somewhere up in the north shore.

There are some good ones a little less expensive. When trying them on make sure the fit around your ummmm self is good, sometimes the the torso part of the bibs is too short with the width is fine.

Check out the new aquaskins bibs and jackets. The fly on the bibs is a really great idea.

have had my Grundel bibs for 10 yrs as well.....I would suggest Guy Cottens instead. They make them in New Bedford and the advantage over the grundens is that they aren't canvas backed/ lined so thay don't hold moisture so they dry faster. A little cheaper cost wise, but construction quality is a little better (all in my opinion)

I like the Guy Cottens as well.

I have the single layer model in the heavy duty line instead of the double and triple layered. They're a little more comfortable (not that the super heavy duty stuff is bad) and more then tough enough and appropriate for the fishing I do. I'm not pulling lobster traps for example.

But if you need/want super heavy duty, the ones they make, definitely are.

Sounds good, I don't pull king crab traps in the bearing sea either, so exteme heavy duty is unnecessary. I just want to stay dry when I'm doing rainy charters. (Man that suked and I won't let that happen again), or on any fun boat day for that matter. I have some old rain gear but its way too light and water finds its way in so its time.

I will check out all the brands this off season and be prepared for next.

Pete, where do you go in the Newport area for this stuff? Your store?

Don't know of anyone who has a really good selection of Guy Cotten in Newport or Aquidneck Island (us included).

I'd have to think somewhere in New Bedford there must be a really well stocked location since they are based there. Not sure if the distributor functions as a walk-in retail shop or not.

I'd carry more of the Guy Cotten but Grundens is the name more people know. We order bits and pieces all the time if you ever need anything and have the surf tops in stock but really don't stock much.

The jacket that is most popular with the commerical guys is the brigg jacket, hooded, neoprene inner cuffs, and heavy as hell. I really like mine, hasn't let me down yet.

Poking around the internet I came across these.
They are Carhartt and sold at workingear.

For occasional use they might work. Around 100 for the set.

How is the PVC, flexible enough?
No water finds its way in?

i abuse it between work and fishing and it's held up great. more flexible than grunds and keeps me dry and warm

The Heavy Duty grunden gear is damn near bullet proof. I have a set and I rarely use it because it is overkill for most of the sufff I do (I tend to wear beathable stuff nowadays) but if you need that level of protection, that is it stuff. I think it is like 18 or 20 oz per yard, very strong. If I went out in the winter that is what I would have on.

I'm usually around Monday thru Friday, often hidden in my office upstairs. Unless I'm out fishing, in which case I'm obviously not there. :)

I just got the guy cotton fleece pullover jacket, and all I can say wow. It is nice b/c it has the rubber ends to the sleeves, and the rubber front, but the rest is fleece. It makes all the diffrence when it can let heat out, but still block the wind. I have another grunden top that is all rubber and it is nice for the rain, but man it is smoking hot tugging on a fish. By the way if you are down the cape, Cape Fish Supply in Chatham has almost any and everything you would want for foul weather gear. I some times will bring down my clients to outfit them with boots and bibs. It is nice b/c they seem to have every size and product you can think of, in stock and ready to try on with the lowest price anywhere.
