I rooted for Phily all the way but the yankees are just too talented.

I'll tell you what really really pisses me off is seeing Johnny Damon in pinstripes instead of red sox!

Wonder what the sox will do next year? They seemed to have the pitching this year but the bats were asleep.

Maybe Poppy is done? Can we hang on to some of the younger talent at contract time? Lets hope so. I would double hate seeing Elsbury or Padroia in pinstripes!!

We do not need or want Damon back! He is as inept in the outfield as I have ever seen him! He played a good center but we have Elsbury and Damon is just horrible in left....and I can't explain why! We need to re-sign Bay and lock up the younguns for a few more seasons! Pappi.....maybe time to make a move there! Congrats to the Yankees....I was rooting for Philly!

Papi's under contract until the end of next season--what move do you propose there? Releasing him and eating his $13 million salary?

Or do you think that some other team will give you more than a case of Rawlings baseballs for him in a trade? :rotf2:

Face it--he's washed up and you're stuck with him.

You're also stuck paying Varitek $3 million next season, whether he plays or not.

WRONG !!!
Ever stop to think the reason they are the richest team in baseball may be because of their winning history !!!
Just like anything else in this country, a great product = $$$

The Steelers have 6 NFL titles--all Super Bowl titles--not 5 ;)

Also, in addition to the 5 WS titles as the Philadelphia Athletics, the franchise has 4 more as the Oakland Athletics.

Actually I Prefer to look at the list like this

Boston Celtics - 17 Championships out of 63 Total or 26.9% of all the Championships

Montreal Canadiens - 22 Stanley Cups (Modern Day NHL) out of 83 Total or 26.5% of all the Cups

New York Yank-mees - 27 World Series out of 105 Total or 25.7% of all the the World Series

Which puts them in 3rd all time......:p :bshake:

.....Or you can look at it like this too

Boston Celtics won 17 of 20 for 85% of the Championships they appeared in

The Canadiens won 22 of 29 for 75.8% of the Cup Finals they appeared in (Modern Day NHL)

Yank-mees won 27 of 40 for 67.5% of the World Series they appeared in

So....Again....3rd Place :bshake:

It has nothing to do with their Winning history....Its because they own one of the Biggest Media Outlets (YES Network) in one of the Biggest Sports Markets (think Merchendising) in the Country.

Plenty of great talent comes out of all the Cities in the country, but the problem is that the markets are so small they can't possibly generate the revenue to compete financially with the Yank-mees. They can afford to keep maybe 1 or 2 high level athletes but thats it....come free-agency no matter what they offer it can get trumped by the yanks...who don't bat an eye at an extra 10 mil.

Teams in other big sports markets can keep up to some degree(i.e. the Sox, Phillies) but even their total salaries were 65-75 million less than the Yanks.

Its now become where the bottom 10-12 teams are now pretty much the farm system for the higher tier teams and the yanks are at the top of the food chain and have money to burn.

Steinbrenner and Boras have ruined baseball

ProfessorM

TV Revenues are what helps the yanks. The TV deal gets them much bigger bucks than any other team. IMO spending 80 million more than any team is 4, 20 million $$$ players. It can't hurt to have that, sure beats a sharp stick in the eye. But you still need to get it done and they did. Congrats to them and now it is ancient history and on to the new year.

disagree. Many like myself come from Italian families. My dad is 84 and grew up with the great Italian ballplayers the yankees had.

This gets passed down, even though they have no Italian players anymore. My 3 daughters have had it passed down to them also.

I don't agree with you ! If what your saying is true how come the Dodgers don't win ??? They are in a major market and their owner has plenty of $$$
Like him or hate him, George Steinbrenner has been a better business man that most of the other owners and he puts his $ back into his team
(unlike our Bruins owner)

ProfessorM
11-08-2009, 11:11 AM
Well lets look at it like this. Can we agree they spent pretty much 80 million more than any other team? That is 4 , 20 mill a year players they have that other teams can't afford. I know the Sox are one of the have's but just doesn't seem fair to the majority of all the other have not's. I know it is what it is but a fair and level field as far as even a min. spending limit would make for a more balanced and level playing field. I know they play within the rules and I find this more of a baseball problem more than a Yankee thing. They won and I am not trying to pale their accomplishments. They did it fair and square and having 4 , 20 mil does not guarantee the trophy, but it sure helps. Imagine living in Cleveland and watching Lee against Sabbathia and say why can't we get players like that.

Thats what I said.....You said it was because of their Rich Winning History and i said it was because they had money to burn.

The Dodgers do put as good of a product as possible on the field and spend a sizeable chunk of change of change, they had the 6th highest payroll in 2009.

As seen by the Yanks the last few years, high payroll doesn't always equate into a championship, sometimes you gotta have heart :hihi: but the law of averages does take effect when you keep scooping up the biggest free agents around......last year they grabbed THE 2 biggest and then dished out another 80 Million for Burnett.....they spent HALF A BILLION dollars on those 3 guys.....that has nothing to do with "Rich Yankee History"

And if it wasn't about money then why don't you see players taking less than other teams offer to play for them just to be a part of this Rich Winning History
