Here are the first 30 cowboy replicas I made.

They are made of PVC not wood. Unlike wood the consistency of the PVC is always the same so all the plugs will swim the same way.

I used 1.5" magnum stainless steel screw eyes.

VMC 5/0 belly hook and VMC 5/0 dressed siwash in the rear. I left off the second belly hook, one less sharp vmc to get impaled on.

They are 7" long and weigh 4.25oz.

They swim on the top with a slow retrieve and create a huge v wake, with a faster retrieve they swim down about 5 feet.

The white with pink stripe has been killer this season.

great job. I turn too much pvc at work so I can't stand the stuff but those are beauties.
How does the paint stick to them and do you put an epoxy coat on as a finish? Real nice job.

The paint sticks better than wood!!! it lays down really smooth too. I like not have to seal the plugs too, no down time.

sprayed etex on them a few coats, basically just to protect the paint job.

it looks like you laminate the pvc, what type of glue do you use?

is this the white pvc, kind of pourous stuff. Like they use for house trim and such or is it the grey PVC they use in plumbing. I do a lot of machining of PVC but it is the solid stock that is same as used in plumbing but in solid dia.'s. It comes in a few colors too. I tried a few poppers like 6 or 7 years ago but the stuff is very heavy. If you ever hit anyone with the plug you would kill em. The white stuff used for trim seems much lighter. Thanks. Paul

yeah theyre laminated strips of the stuff they use for house trims. 1" stock laminated in press.

the "glue" is top secret, trade secret.

the weight of my plugs are the same as wood. almost indentical.

i use the white or black pvc.

These plugs are sweet. I can attest to how nice they look/feel in person. Nice workmanship by chefchris.

I'm assuming the pvc is more durable then wood, Chris?

That form of PVC material is not what I use at work. Thanks for the info. PVC dents probably as easy as wood. It is pretty soft. but it won't rot.:)

its a toss up of which is more durable.

ive fished the hell out of a few of mine this year and theyre way less beat up then there wood counter parts.

they resist the bluefish teeth much better too. I had one night at Pt Jude where all I caught were 10 to 17lb bluefish for 3 hours and you can barely tell.

its really durable and you dont have to worry if it gets chipped cause its not sealed like wood.

great looking cowboys, I've always imagine that PVC would swim less "alive" then wood. have you made any top water plugs?

yeah ive made BIG canals 10" long and 4oz , BIG pencils 11" long and 4.25oz, BIG spooks 9" and 3oz, BIG surface poppers 9" and 3oz. Ill start a new thread later tonight if i have time with some of my other designs.

Turned on a machinists lathe?
