Anyone have any input on the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000 Digital Camera or the
Olympus Stylus 1050-SW

Definitely have to get a camera.... so any advice on a waterproof camera welcome.

I could use the same advice. I have always wanted a good waterproof digital camera. Come on all you pro photogs, give us some advice. What's the best digital, waterproof camera with price vs. performance?

got an older olympus sw- i keep it in my plug bag. bulletproof and takes good pics.

I just bought a new digital, but it's a DSRL and not waterproof. When I'm standing on the shore (probably talking to Joe L.) I promise to get some great photos of you all :laugha:

I would check out the Olympus Stylus 8000. I have the older 770SW with the all metal body that seems to take more and better of a beeting than the plastic bodied Stylus cameras of that time (2 years ago). The 8000 has the same metal body.

Picture quality is OK but for some odd reason I can't figure out, my pictures come out fair to OK yet Tynan's with the same camera come out fantastic - can't figure out why.

The key to great pictures is composition. Tynan has a great eye for composition. Sometimes a fine piece of photographic equipment can help but what puts it over the top is the person looking through the view finder.:)

I was being a little tongue in cheek, he takes better pictures than I do because he is a better behind the lens than I :rotf2:.

Another trick to getting a good shot: take lots of the same picture with slight variations in angles, settings, direction, etc. If you take enough the odds eventually are with you that one will be better than average.

It is the digital age vs film.

BTW: I use 3 different cameras, none of which is waterproof but I'm a boater not a surf guy. I've got a 9 year old Canon Elph (the original S100) that I like a lot as it is very small and simple to use, an Olympus Evolt500 DSLR with 2 zoom lenses, and the newest is the Creative VadoHD movie camera. I'm using the Vado almost exclusively now and you can capture individual frames from a movie. Of course the resolution is not as great as from a DSLR, but for posting on web/email its OK, not printing large 8x10's.

I don't think Tynan's camera takes fantastic pictures. This picture makes my hair look grey, my arms skinnier than they are and frankly I don't look nearly as handsome as I really am.

I've got the Olympus Stylus Tough H-6000 and I've had very good luck with it. High quality pics, and It's taken the beating that I normally dish out on all my gear. It's submersible to 5 feet (though I haven't tested that feature yet!) and I believe I paid under 300 bucks for the camera, case, and memory card.

Don't forget the software it can make a good photo a great photo.

I have the Pentax Optio and have been happy with it

Older olympus Stylus 710, water resistant, used it on the charter boat for 2 seasons now and it does great.

Actually bought a waterproof, underwater case for it to be very waterproof - it cost more than the camera and I found I don't even have to use the case.

You guys are hilarious. I take my share of crappy photos. Problem with point and shoot digital is just that. You point and shoot. Very hard to get the correct settings. I take a lot of photos and I may get a few per hundred that are worth shooting. Light is another issue. On the bright days the camera takes awesome pictures. In low light and cloudy days it gets worse. Don't be afraid to shoot a lot. So if you getting a camera to take fish shots make sure you read the reviews on the flash since most will be at night. If you want underwater shots I am more impressed with the Pentax than with the Olympus. T Orlando has an older Pentax and it takes way better pics underwater than mine. My stylus however is great in cold weather too. It is submersible to 35 ft and shockproof. So having a camera that is able to stay on you at all times is better than a camera that will be onshore in a bag.

I have been using a stylus 790sw the last couple of years and have been pretty happy with it. I agree with Tynan, take a lot of pics. i get a few gems every year after taking hundereds of shots. The clarity of the pics in poor light is not that good, but it shows how big a fish is. I tried it underwater at the canal this year, i was a bit nervous. There was a cormorant that kept following every plug thrown. I couldnt get him in the screen though, it woulda been a cool shot.
