View Full Version : Nike Challenge Thread
BigFish 12-01-2009, 08:47 PM Professor Moriarty was over the other day and we were talking Floyd Roman Nike's and he had with him an original and was kind enough to gift to me an unfinished body he copied from it. (Thanks Paul) I have always wanted to try some Nike's so now I got the bug! I turned a body yesterday and will progress to turn some more but I thought this might make a fun challenge? If anyone else might be interested in trying a Floyd Roman Nike copy over the winter months I thought all those who do could post their progress and finished results in this thread and it might be fun along the way for many of us and we might learn a thing or two and at the very least have fun watching each other go through the process! Anyone interested in joining in with me?:uhuh:
blondterror 12-01-2009, 10:50 PM I made one Nike last winter and plan to make a few more this winter. See green nike next to the 2 green dannies...

The Dad Fisherman 12-02-2009, 06:49 AM I'll give her a go this year...
chefchris401 12-02-2009, 08:57 AM I just started working on these last week. A big 4.5oz and 2.5-3 oz one.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on a few different styles, should be a winner.
Striperknight 12-02-2009, 09:52 AM If you can send me one of the dupes you made I would try. Don't have access to this plug to make one. I recall Numby posting x-rays of this plug so I can figure out the weight placement from that.
chefchris401 12-02-2009, 10:40 AM ill post some pics of the bob hahn ( ithink it is) i have, you can clearly see the belly weights, nice swimming plug, but poorly made and sealed.
at least youll have an idea of the placement.
ProfessorM 12-02-2009, 12:12 PM here is a previous discussion on the larger Nike.
http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripertalk/plug-building-got-wood/27118-roman-nikes-how-4.html
Larry is building the smaller one, which is my favorite. There are several sizes. I will take a pic and let you see one that is disassembled so you can see the weighting.
ProfessorM 12-02-2009, 12:44 PM her you go. Info on the smaller size
ProfessorM 12-02-2009, 12:46 PM here area few pics of the plug compared to the larger size one. The mack is Tagger the large olive is Tobias. The smaller ones I made and an original is on the bottom.
ProfessorM 12-02-2009, 12:53 PM Here is the belly wgt location and the hook locations. You can get dim. from first post blueprint. Tail wgt is 5/16 dia by .600 long. I would drill the front belly hook hole for a large grommet as you will need a long swivel to reach the thru wire, thus it will be a bigger diam. swivel, as it is a pretty fat plug at that point. The original used screw eyes. Thru hole is drilled on center. I put a 1/4" c'bore on front angle to allow for a smoother nose grommet fit. I bandsaw angle and sand in the final dim. at 40 degree angle. This plug will swim pretty deep and with a very nice wiggle. It is a winner and I like this size better than the larger size but that is just my opinion.

Eric he posted that x ray for the larger size I believe. Larry is making the slightly smaller size, the one I posted. If he can't send you one I will. I got a few left and just cut stock last nite to make more this winter.
chefchris401 12-02-2009, 05:45 PM those look damn sexy prof m!!!
id love to see the larger ones. anything over 4oz is my style.

Here is a print of one that I got to work. No tail weight on this one.
Sgt Striper 12-04-2009, 07:36 PM This is great, I was looking for some info on the Nike a week or two ago. Gonna give it a shot this weekend.
What wood was used on the originals?
ProfessorM 12-04-2009, 09:25 PM I just finished turning up 10. I have always used AYC and this time I made a couple out of AWC but I would think they used pine maybe but they are pretty old so I really don't know what was the predominate wood used back then. Probably what ever they could get their hands on. The one I have is fairly light so I say pine, maybe:confused:
In the one I documented I said smaller but it is still 6.5 inches long so not that small. Just smaller than the large one. Maybe Peter, VB, will post a picture of all the sizes as I know he has all the sizes in brand new condition in triplicate.:uhuh:,,not fair.
BigFish 12-04-2009, 09:28 PM Is that maybe definite?:rotf2:
ProfessorM 12-04-2009, 09:31 PM I like AYC. it works good
Sgt Striper 12-05-2009, 10:11 PM Prof. , Thanks for posting the drawing and specs for the Nike, got one turned tonight and it looks pretty good, going with one hook though. It's all drilled and in the sealer now, will post some pics tomorrow.

what wood did you use?
Sgt Striper 12-07-2009, 06:05 PM her you go. Info on the smaller size
Any other info on the larger Nike you may have??
Got this from the old thread:
The angle of the diving plane appears to be 35 degrees. The plane is 2 1/4 inches long and 1 inch wide. The protrusion on the front of the plug is obviously also 1" dia and projects forward about 1 1/8 inch.
The plug is 7 1/2 " long. It is 1 3/4 ' wide at it's widest, about 3 " from the nose. The last 1 1/4' of the plug is a straight barrell, 3/4 " in diameter.
Thanx...Lou
The tail hook is 2 1/4 from the rear, the front hook is 2 1/2 " from the nose and there is 2 5/8" between them.
Wanna do this one too!!
jkswimmer 12-09-2009, 12:37 AM I used AYC this seemed to work on the ones I made.
timmah 12-16-2009, 12:58 PM Here is my attempt - Thanks for the diagram proff.
It works well - It is not as fat as I would like because I only had 1.5" stock but I still like it. I will definitely make more it was fun to build.

ProfessorM 12-16-2009, 03:43 PM nice job and I like the eyes
srfrat 12-18-2009, 10:26 PM Cool read thanks guys.Nice to see different varieties of a classic.
Its a cool plug to build that gets you thinking alot,
well,me anyways.
I did some for a swap last winter & had fun doing them, they have a nice tight wiggle to them in a strong current,it seems that mine love current, the stronger the better, they also dart nice in the edy's.I also used ayc with the best results,.I tried wrc & wc with poor results.
ProfessorM 12-19-2009, 08:52 AM very nice job, with a little different shape.
Sgt Striper 10-10-2010, 11:32 AM The rumor of my demise has been greatly exaggerated!!
saltydog 10-10-2010, 11:58 AM WOW nice look'n plugs great info. im going to be a YEAR LATE on this one :smash:BUT will TRY to hand carve a couple this month.
thanks for the info an pic's
GOOD LUCK GOOD PLUGGIN:uhuh:
ProfessorM 10-10-2010, 02:24 PM nice old post and real nice plugs. Great job.
Bigfish painted a few for me that I turned last winter. I'll have to dig them up and post a picture as the paint came out real nice.
numbskull 10-10-2010, 03:56 PM High class stuff, Sarge. Very impressive.
justinhill 10-10-2010, 05:14 PM i might give these a try...i just need lathe. belt sander might work.
Sgt Striper 10-21-2010, 11:33 AM Two more, plus some others I finished
fishbones 10-21-2010, 11:55 AM Lookin' good! Nice paint work on them!
Sgt Striper 10-22-2010, 07:27 PM Took the Nike's out today to test, Jr's swim great as do the big ones, but they need just a little tug to get them to bite in.
I'm happy, make some more after fishing season (if it get's here)
Smulax 08-16-2011, 01:44 PM I just tried making a few some roll out and some dig nice I cant figure out what I did on the rollers. I will have to play some more.
Sgt Striper 08-16-2011, 02:47 PM I just tried making a few some roll out and some dig nice I cant figure out what I did on the rollers. I will have to play some more.
Let's see some pic's of them, also were did you weight them?
Smulax 08-16-2011, 05:32 PM I will put up some pics later. I added weight and re tested them all but one worked so I will let them dry then seal paint and epoxy. I decided to take on lipped swimmers of all kinds (Bottles, and datetrs too) when I ran out of metal lips. as a newer builder I was alittle intimidated by the failure rate but figuring out how to get them to swim correctly is a fun challenge.
Smulax 08-16-2011, 08:03 PM The first pic is of the nikes on the bench and a darter I was playing with. Second is the bottoms to show the weight holes. most of them didnt need the holes near the chin but I was playing with different weight options to see what happens. the last pic is just for fun so you guys can see what I have been doing.

Sgt Striper 08-16-2011, 08:17 PM More taper and thinner in the tail section, leave the small belly weight about 1/3 forward of the tail and add 1/4 x 3/4 tail weight. This plugs pivots from the tail!! Finicky plug but if you use Paul's (ProfM) drawing http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripertalk/727710-post8.html it will swim "Perfect"
Smulax 08-16-2011, 08:26 PM I did use his drawings I forgot to mention they have tail weights. 3/8 x 1 The larger ones I did on my own after a sucessful test of the smaller ones. those were the ones I had to play with. I also tweaked the angle of the lip a little.
Sgt Striper 08-17-2011, 08:42 AM 3/8 x1 tail weight is to much, half that amount should work.
surfflyfish 08-17-2011, 10:03 AM amazing job, i had a chance to grab one of the Tobias Nike, and this thread is just the real builders challenge. just amazing job guys.
what about fish cought on them.:fishin:
Smulax 08-17-2011, 10:15 AM thanks for the weighting tip I will put less in when i am done with paint.
Smulax 08-17-2011, 10:25 AM I will also put up some pics of finished work
Smulax 09-18-2011, 08:21 PM Finished Pics are in fall plugs thread I just started
I put less weight in the tails. I still have to put hooks on them and test. They all worked before I painted them so I have high hopes.
Spiderman 11-29-2014, 06:44 PM Looking to make a few of these.Struggling to read the plans a little. What is the distance from the tip of the nose to the thinnest part of the neck?
Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device
ProfessorM 11-29-2014, 07:56 PM Roughly 7/8 to 15/16. When you cut the angle leave it a little longer and sand it to the final length, kind of sneaking up on it.
Spiderman 11-29-2014, 08:36 PM Thanks

Spiderman 12-05-2014, 02:08 PM Can I ask for one more measurement, please. What is the distance between the fattest part of the body and end of the tail.
