Years ago, the cows that you see roaming the cliffs at block used to use the bluffs on the cove as a jumping off point. Normally the weakest of the herd would jump, or be pushed off by other cows to be smashed on the rocks below. It's amazing how the block island cow population has a way of regulating itself.

Chef - I had this discussion with someone recently, but we didn't draw a concrete conclusion. We guessed that "cow" was a reference to livestock rather than huge bass, that at one time there may have been a pier there given its proximity to the mainland. I'll be interested to hear the voice of authority on this issue.

Yup. I heard it's much like tog fishing with green crabs. They can't eat them all at once so you have to wait until the third or fourth hit.

My serious guess would be either
1. a cow wandered off and got stuck on a rock as the tide rose
OR
2. Someone named Cow owned it.

Or 3:

During a massive storm, a brave cow lept from the cliff and swam out to a sinking fishing vessel. Said cow saved the lives of an entire longlining crew from certain peril by tying herself to the life raft and dragging them into what is now called cow cove. At low tide during the full moon, you can still see her hoofprints on the rocks...

First settlers landed and swam to shore bringing with them the island's first cows who where pushed off the boats and forced ashore.

I bet it was kind of fun pushing cows off a boat! :)

Yes! I thought this was interesting. I read about this in the new issue of edible rhody, there was a big RI dairy aricle. It said it was 1632 , when they first did this.

There is a placard embedded into one of the nearby rocks were the road ends that talks about this.

Here's the real story: Back in the early 1980s I had the pleasure of guiding a famous sports figure to some striped bass on the island. He told me he wanted to catch some of those "pin striped" fish. I told him I couldn't guarantee him "pin striped" but could get him some "seven striped" fish. Well, the wind was hawking from the southwest making most of the island unfishable so we ended up casting at Grove Point. We waded a short way onto the bar and I told him to cast his needle into the cove toward North Light blinking in the distance. A short while later he hooks up and struggles with this huge bass, he gets it to the surfs edge and I land it for him. It's a real brute, over 50 easily - I lift it out of the water so he could see it and he yells out "HOLY COW". I shake Phil's hand and congratulate him. He mentions something like "now they're gonna call this place "Holy Cow Cove". "No Phil", I say, from now on it we'll just call it Cow Cove. And that is how Cow Cove got its name ;)

When the Island was settled they used the shallow water of "cow cove"
to land livestock there mostly cows. They pushed them off the boat and cows swam rest of way in... One of the people on that boat was my ancestor Trustrum Dodge... Although he was technically not a settler of the Island the settlers agreed to give himland to stay and teach them to fish... A lil history lesson for ya all....:buds:

Makes sense as it's prolly the flatest part of the island except maybe Crescent
beach.

Are the Dodge Cottages still standing? Last time i was over the Cutting Cottages had been
replaced by condos. :smash:

Took a few trips around the Island by boat last summer, couldn't believe some of the new 'summer bungalows' that have sprouted up...:eek5:...I think the last time I was on the Island was '99 with DZ and the gang

I started to get concerned when Lew closed the Monday Night Club...:hihi:...then I saw an ad for Martha Stewart's Block Island Collection of patio furniture and knew it was gonna change in a big way...:hs:

Rocket's probably wearing a suit and selling real estate now...or maybe not...

Damn, speaking of cows, I've got an old photo of my great-grandfather standing with a couple in front of the Breakers - early 1900's - with his arm around the neck of a big heffer - if I can unearth it, I'll post it

The Breakers was on Corn Neck Road, if memory serves
