BigFish 12-28-2009, 05:51 PM SPAM-alicious!:spam: Tagger 12-28-2009, 05:54 PM looks very clean ... machined ,,, alot of work there .. no ? machinist 12-28-2009, 06:22 PM our, just trying to give credit to a few canal gentlemen who have taken me under their wing with some advice. the one pictured is made from 1 1/8" dia. natural color nylon. time to machine is aprox. a few minutes to form the shape. this is done with a pc. of hardened tool steel blade on a metal cutting lathe. the form tool is feed into the work pc. using the cross slide to a dial reading. when correct dia. is obtained the dial is set and the process is easy. have been trying some pvc (grey in color) Karl F 12-28-2009, 06:43 PM what is the material used near the tail? SS...Lead?.. can def. tell a machinist made that lure... clean...very clean. numbskull 12-28-2009, 06:50 PM Nice workmanship. Now so much for plugs, how do you feel about making dies to stamp lips?:heybaby::heybaby::heybaby::heybaby: ;) BigFish 12-28-2009, 06:53 PM :rotf2::rotf2::rotf2: machinist 12-28-2009, 07:02 PM thanks. nose is 303 stainless steel. lip die , kick press, arbor, vise, or power press being used? just blanks or complete with hole and bend? eskimo 12-28-2009, 07:07 PM looks like it would cast mile. does it float? go4broke44 12-28-2009, 07:33 PM I like it! numbskull 12-28-2009, 07:34 PM thanks. nose is 303 stainless steel. lip die , kick press, arbor, vise, or power press being used? just blanks or complete with hole and bend? I was joking, sort of, but if you can make lip dies (or have a laser/water jet)......well I'm not greedy, I'd be happy with just blanks. As for a press, beats me but I'd track down whatever I needed. It is not fair, however, to sidetrack your thread or pressure you for my advantage. Welcome to the site, your stuff is neat, and if you get more involved and want to talk making lips give a shout. Back Beach 12-28-2009, 07:47 PM It is not fair, however, to sidetrack your thread or pressure you for my advantage. Welcome to the site, your stuff is neat, and if you get more involved and want to talk making lips give a shout. Thinly veiled begging at its best....:hee: machinist 12-28-2009, 07:57 PM i took some casts at a local h.s. football field. using a eyeless 10' daiwa pole with a abu garcia ambassador bg 7000 hsn reel with 20lb mono. was ble to get 100yds. had several canal fisherman makes some casts at the canal and they surpassed my casts. flies like a missle, no wobble. it does sink, but i try to stop the filght just before the water. on the surface it swims well. machinist 12-28-2009, 07:59 PM no problem, nature of the trade. let me do a little research and see what i can come up with. numbskull 12-28-2009, 08:02 PM Thinly veiled begging at its best....:hee: My kingdom for a .90 danny lip. But be still my little pretty or you won't get your precious MUSSO eely, that in fact does exist, looks like a good deep running current plug, and has now been reborn.....maybe. :rude: Slipknot 12-28-2009, 08:14 PM Very Clean but don't you want the eyes in the back? machinist 12-28-2009, 08:47 PM thanks. first plugs i tried the eyes were towards the weighted end. was not happy with distance . moved to present possition and flared eye socket, happier with distance ProfessorM 12-29-2009, 09:42 AM Thinly veiled begging at its best....:hee: classic :biglaugh: ProfessorM 12-29-2009, 10:04 AM looks great. Neat idea. I have pretty much tried making some kind of fishing lure out of everything possible, material wise. Stainless, delrin, pvc, polycarb, titanuium, aluminum, HDPE, you name i've tried it . I still prefer wood as that is what I find most satisfying. Below is the first plug I ever made. I copied a large Gibbs polaris. I figured I would take a piece of tool steel cut out the profile on a small cnc bridgeport and then harden it. I then jammed it into a solid piece of PVC on a large lathe. Problem is you would need a large lathe to do something like this as it takes a lot of power. It ended up being the first and last plug ever built with that tool. Not worth it. That pvc plug also weighs 6 oz as it sits so I think the pvc plugs some are building out of pvc are not pure pvc, as it is really heavy. machinist 12-29-2009, 02:04 PM hello, here are a few more pics of what i have produced using the skive tool method. grey one is pvc. Back Beach 12-30-2009, 08:44 AM But be still my little pretty or you won't get your precious MUSSO eely, that in fact does exist, looks like a good deep running current plug, and has now been reborn.....maybe. :rude: HAH! You're bluffing...even an old scourge like yourself would never stoop to smashing the dreams of a hapless neophyte... Charleston 12-30-2009, 11:04 PM Form tools are too easy. They will chatter alot of you're not careful. Nothing like single point tooling if you want to enjoy it. The squid plug looks good but is the hook on the wrong end? Eric Roach 12-31-2009, 04:56 PM Neat design -- they look like they'd throw a country mile. numbskull 12-31-2009, 08:22 PM HAH! You're bluffing...even an old scourge like yourself would never stoop to smashing the dreams of a hapless neophyte... Ye of little faith. :rude: ProfessorM 12-31-2009, 10:50 PM it's alive !!! , alive I tell you machinist 01-01-2010, 09:30 AM Happy New Year All machinist 01-01-2010, 10:12 AM as to the cast, i can throw 100yds with my first ever conventional reel. a more experienced friend can surpass my cast. looking forward to try it and catch first fish with it at the cannal. thanks wrikerjr 01-05-2010, 08:26 AM The tail weight looks like a typical cone tail weight that Stan Kuzia use to make. Stan Kuzia and Stan Gibbs worked on that shape togther for plugs in the canal. Is that where you got the inspiration for that design? Eric Roach 01-05-2010, 01:22 PM Are those originals? They're beautiful. wrikerjr 01-06-2010, 02:15 PM Eric, I am not sure if you are asking me, but those are pictures from an article, they are not mine. I just thought the profile was very close to Kuzia's tails which i know Stan Gibb's developed for him (or at least provided the input). Kindest, Billy machinist 01-06-2010, 04:30 PM thanks, tail weights are not cast lead they are machined 303 stainless steel to a cone shape. a canal fisherman who happens to have the same first name of stanley has taken me under his wing. he has shared alot of his plug making knowledge with me, and i am very grateful for it. we have discussed this design and with some tweeking think we have a keeper. wrikerjr 01-06-2010, 04:54 PM Machinist, If that person is Stan Kuzia you are one the right track as Stan is a legend in his own right. Best of Luck to you with the lures, looks great.
