Dug up some info but what is everyone using just for some dressed hooked and flags?

I don't really go nuts with tying so I don't need anything high end but something better then the ancient one I have now.

I've got a beauty that Prof M built.

The classic solution is to weld a rod to a pair of vise grips and clamp in a regular vise. The vise grips will be flat and perpendicular to the rod.

By the way, brass sinker eyes are a convenient choice to tie your flags on.

no welding required!

Cote's fly shop has a knock off of the regal vise that goes for around $50 that works pretty good. The best bet for under 200 is the Rinzetti Traveler saltwater model. I've gone through a bunch as I do a fair amount of comercial saltwater fly tying plus do my own tail hooks. be carefull of some of the ones that say they're as good as the Rinzetti. been there done that and have given them all either away or sent back then Got the Master. Works great.Ron

Forgot about the vice grip modification although I've seen it before.

This is most likely my best bet as I can't imagine a lower end fly tying vice as strong as a pair of vise grips that I already have.

do they actually fail eventually? Even half decent ones?

Well my Rinzetti master has been going for close to 8 yrs an still works great. I tie over 2500 flies, jigs an tail hooks a year.Like any good tool if you use it right an don't abuse it it will last quite a while. also if something does fail on it they have replacement parts and a fantastic warrentee. So far I haven't needed either. Like my Rod Lathe from them . Been in use for well over 20 yrs. Ron
