View Full Version : Portly Angler Challenge 2010 - Official Thread

JohnR
01-01-2010, 02:37 PM
Here are the rules for the challenge, slightly modified from 2010.

1. Entry fee is 1 Wooden Plug

2. Competition will be based on percentage of weight lost (Weight Lost / Weight at Start = Percentage Lost) not on actual pounds.

3. To get in just post in this thread "I'm In" by 12 midnight on January 2nd (Relax and enjoy New Years Day). You can post your starting weight. A Pic is Optional......its just for reference. If anyone would like to take the "Lady Angler" option just Say "I'm In with the Lady Angler Option" when they enter, then they can just PM me their starting weight and their updates and I will just post your Percentages only at the update intervals.

4. On the 1st and 15th of every month post how much you've lost and we'll figure out what your percentage is.

5. The contest ends May 1st 2010....just in time to hit the Suds. Post your Final Weight and we will see who the Winners are.

6 The Second place winner will receive 3 plugs and the 1st Place winner will receive the rest. Of course the 1st Place guy gets to pick 1st. :D

Joining in late isn't a problem. The later you join the more of a challenge it gets but whenever you join it'll be good for you - that's what counts.

As for the plugs, I'll probably have people bring them to the shows and drop off - no need to mail individually.

MY LAST SUPPER/INDULGENCE. I went to the Venus tonight for a my last supper. I don't usually eat like this and I feel like crap right now but it was great.
1st 1 glass of water and a coors light
2nd fancy bread with olive oil dipping sauce
3rd clam chowder
4th half of a 2.5lb baked stuffed lobster with scallop stuffing
also 4th 2 baked stuffed jumbo shrimp with potatoes and veggies
also 4th 1 bottle of white wine
And dessert. 1 expresso, 1 tall johnny walker black neat and a warm brownie with hot fudge, ice cream and whipped cream.

Real bad since I was 277 when I got back from China in March and have been "watching my weight" since. I gained 25 pounds while "dieting" (I went as high as 302 but lost 5 since Christmas).

I can diet really strict for 2 weeks and lose 7 pounds but then in one weekend put back on 15 (no exageration) . Its just incredible how fast I can gain and how slow I lose. I will spike up 4 pounds the morning after going to Olive Garden for soup and salad!!

I assume other Portly People have this same issue of rapid up but slow down?

I remember I used to buy all my dress clothing from Anderson Little (now gone) . Their cloths fit me perfectly right off the rack. One day when I went in and wanted a suit. The guy measured me and says OK follow me. He brought me to a rack that had a sign "Portly". That was my first Portly experience. I wanted to kill the guy. I let him give me a couple of jackets (my plan was to be polite then leave that A hole and go somewhere else) to try on and to my great dismay , the damned jackets fit perfectly. My heart sunk to the floor!! :( One of those days you wish you could forget.

I didn't get in on this but about the same time you guys started this tread for the 1st time in my life I decided to start watching what I eat and drop some pounds. Been feeling like crap a lot and tired !
Did some reading up on what to do and came to the conclusion you don't diet, you make life & eating habit changes !
Told my wife to completely change what she feeds me and have been eating nothing but whole grain, wheat, fish, veggies & fruit.
Started a bit after the 1st of the year @ 217
Last time I stepped on the scale about a week ago 203
Plan to get down to below 190 (maybe 180) and stay there !

The Dad Fisherman

That right there is the hard part....nicely done though getting down.

or go all out and switch to oatmeal (real oatmeal, not instant) with some walnuts and berries. much better for you than any cereal. Slower digesting grains, lots of antioxidents in the berries (blue berries or raspberries are good) and some healthy fats that will keep you full in the walnuts. Special K is crap. Really all cereals are crap. You're essentially eating a bowl of crackers marketed as being part of a nutritious breakfast.

if your cholesterol and bp numbers are good, just switch to eggs. An omlete with veggies and no cheese will do more for your weight loss than any grains will. And don't buy into the "you can only have two egg yokes a week or you'll get fat and die" crap - eat the whole egg. I eat about 2 dozen eggs a week and my cholesterol is lower than the recommended healthy range by a good amount and my bp is right where it should be. Fat is not bad for you.

Oatmeal is my weekend meal.....I mush up a banana, throw in some Raisins, Walnuts and a touch of honey....good stuff.

Don't have time in the morning to cook oatmeal....did the research on the cereal and found that the mini wheats are a good source of fiber and protein for the bang and they don't taste like plaster. quick and easy

Special K is crap.....most cereals are as you said. Gotta read the labels.

bottom line is that if you want to lose weight you gotta limit calories....period. doesn't matter what you eat it matters how much of it you eat.

The whole wheat, anti oxidant, low fat, low cholestorol, no trans fats...offer other health benefits but weight loss isn't really one of them.....if you eat 5000 calories a day in fruit and veggies you still won't lose weight.......you'll probably feel better because of the vitamins and minerals you are taking in versus empty calories....but it isn't helping with weight loss

Biggest thing someone can do to lose weight is portion control....eat the amount the label says....that and move around...sitting around and just watching what you eat isn't going to get much done either.

Clogston29
02-12-2010, 10:21 AM
true. calories in vs. calories out will get the weight off, for a while. it definately works (subway diet or taco bell diet anyone?), but there are more efficient and healthier ways to tweak the principle. depending on your goals though you can gain alot of benefits by manupulating protein / carb / fat proportions and incorporating strength training while on a caloric deficite. if you want to specifically target fat loss, rather than weight loss, for example you'll want higher protein and fat with less carbs and a good amount of heavier weight training. if you don't want your matabolism to crash, which will almost certainly lead to weight gain after the "diet" is over, you won't want to go too low on the calories or lose too much muscle mass while dieting. most people assume that when they're losing weight that it means they're losing only fat. its simply not true. a good portion of the weight lost on traditional american diets (cut calories and increase cardiovascular excercise with the goal of creating a 1000 kcal per day deficite and lose 2 lbs per week) comes from loss of muscle mass. this slows metabolism and is a significant factor in all of the yoyo dieting people do (along with low will power and the idea that once your "done" with the diet that you go back to eating how you used to).

Seemed to leveled out @ 200 and staying there.
Wanted to get down under 190, I guess some form of exercise is needed and not just changing eating habits.

Is anyone going to win this?

I think I promised a neat BigFish plug to the winner if they're over 35 down.

I weighed 235 this February when I was diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes.

This morning I was down to 192.5

I'm not in this little contest, but I think it's something that I can brag about anyway.

I gave mine to John R to give to the winner
who won?

Mike, sorry to here that, it's not the way we'd want to lose weight. I hope you do well. I don't know anything about type 2 diabetes but I'm sure you'd rather not have it.

My wife has type 2 diabetes - it does a number on the energy level and stamina. I was pretty fat for a while there. I lost 55 pounds and now weigh what I did when I got married twenty years ago.

Did you have to buy new sweat pants?

I burned the sweatpants in a self-devised ritual, the details of which are somewhat disturbing. Then, naked, I went into the attic and pulled down some retro-wear from the George Herbert Walker Bush administration....

I've been REALLY bad - not gaining weight (actually lost a few more) - just getting this thing put to bed :smash: :buds:.

Thanks John for putting together the Portly Angler contest and everyone that participated. It gave me the incentive to get started and keep it going. Down 40 total at this point but would like to drop another 10 to 20. I have been running but the main thing has been trying to eat right and portion control. It feels good but it is all about getting healthy so I will be around for my family and setting a good example for my kids. I hope you will be running the contest in 2011. Wishing everyone goodluck! Edit: didn't realize this thing is about to be over. nevermind...

Can I still enter the competition or is it too late? If so I totally understand.

2 years ago I didn't enter the competition but ended up losing 70 lbs. But after 3 months of binge drinking and poor eating habits while living in the Keys I ended up putting back on some poundage. THis year at Thanksgiving I was pushing 250. Now i'm down to 230-235. not weighing myself again until Jan. 1st, but my goal is to get down to 205 again.

Let me know if I can enter. If not, it's cool. Good luck to all :)
