View Full Version : Whale Wars 2010
PRBuzz 01-06-2010, 06:10 AM So much for this seasons new hi-tech anti-whaling boat!
SYDNEY - A conservation group's boat had its bow sheared off and was taking on water Wednesday after it collided with a Japanese whaling ship in the frigid waters of Antarctica, the group said. The boat's six crew members were safely rescued.
The society said its vessel Ady Gil — a high-tech speedboat that resembles a stealth bomber — was hit by the Japanese ship the Shonan Maru near Commonwealth Bay and had about 10 feet (three meters) of its bow knocked off.
The group accused the Japanese ship of deliberately ramming the Ady Gil.
"They were stopped dead in the water when the incident occurred," Maclean said of the Ady Gil. "When they realized that the Shonan Maru was aiming right for them, they tried to go into reverse to get the bow out of the way but it was too late. The Shonan Maru made a course correction and plowed directly into the front end of the boat."
JohnR 01-06-2010, 08:12 AM Hmmm, record breaking speedboat in use, with the intention of intercepting whaling boats, by an organization that continually uses harsh and highly illegal tactics to thwart at best barely legal and possibly unnecessary whaling. There is a shocker.
Hope the speed boat sank, with all hands recovered, of course.
Pete_G 01-06-2010, 08:46 AM I fail to see any effort to reverse in the video.

i feel exactly the same.... we need a stronger US Presence like some battleships to change their attitude.
PRBuzz 01-06-2010, 09:47 AM If a BFT goes for $177K for a ~500lb'er (~$300-350/lb), what does a whale meat sell for, total or by-the-pound?
FishermanTim 01-06-2010, 10:57 AM If they Japanese "researcher" have to kill as many whales as they do in the "name of research", exactly what the F*#K are they researching? They must be doing some gawd-damn ground breaking research if they collect all that "data" and yet there have been no disclosures of their studies, and why don't we see them disposing of the carcasses when they are done?
Gee, I'm no rocket scientist, but that sure sounds like they are really sucky researchers.

That was funny!:biglaugh::biglaugh: I haven't seen a full South Park before, just snips here and there. It's pretty good.
At the 1:39 mark on that video it was good to see that Peter Garrett singer from the band Midnight Oil is the Environment Minister.
That Captain on that Whale Wars show is going to get somebody killed. I'm surprised he hasn't had his license taken away.
Good,
I know im going to catch hell for this, but I bellieve the crew of the Japanese boat Did Not use enough force. Anyone that trys to prevent a comercial boat from fishing should be ramed or shot at (and not with water canons).
EricW 01-06-2010, 05:52 PM That is the same boat that used to be called "Earth Race". Back in 2006 it set a record for an around the world run. It ran on biodeisel.
The first owner sold it and that is where it ended up. I got to see that boat in Boston when it was there. Looked really cool close up. I posted a thread about it back then.

If I remember right, on that trip they struck a fishing boat killing a member of the fishing boats crew.

His Strategy is abysmal ..... and right out of the sand box at times
PRBuzz 02-06-2010, 09:06 AM 0-2, they did it again!
SYDNEY - The anti-whaling ship the Bob Barker and a Japanese harpoon boat collided in the icy waters off Antarctica on Saturday — the second major clash this year in the increasingly aggressive confrontations between the two sides.
No one was reportedly injured in the latest strike. The U.S.-based activist group Sea Shepherd, which sends vessels to confront the Japanese fleet each year, said a small hole was torn in the hull of its ship, but it was above the water line and the vessel was not in danger of sinking.
The Bob Barker sustained a 3-ft. long, 4-inch wide gash in its hull. Welders aboard the ship were already working on patching the hole, and the Bob Barker would resume its pursuit of the whalers, Watson said.
Video shot from the Bob Barker and released by Sea Shepherd shows the two ships side by side moving quickly through the water. The ships come closer together and the Japanese ship then appears to turn away, but its stern swings sharply toward the Bob Barker. The collision is obscured by spray, but a loud clanging noise can be heard before the vessels separate.
Sea Shepherd founder Captain Paul Watson said by satellite telephone that the Japanese ship rammed the Bob Barker — named after the U.S. game show host who donated millions to buy it for Sea Shepherd — as it blocked the slipway of the Japanese fleet's factory ship.
JohnnyD 02-06-2010, 11:54 AM The Japs are probably trying to hit the boats. That's exactly what what I would do.
Raven 02-06-2010, 01:21 PM keeping it in the forefront of the news...
but Obviously they are playing a very dangerous game...
they need a hull ripper mounted on the side of their boat...:uhuh:
MakoMike 02-06-2010, 02:49 PM Doesn't make any sense that the Japs rammed them, how do you ram a vessel by turning away from it?
