View Full Version : Separating A Two Piece Rod Stuck Together?
fishweewee 02-20-2003, 09:35 AM I have a two piece stick that feels like it is welded together pretty solid. Problem was I was using it as a walking stick while fishing a rock pile - so I pushed the top section into the bottom real tight.
I tried doing the "stick-the-rod-behind-your-knees-and-pull-apart" routine - that didn't work.
Also tried dripping a bit of wd-40 lube (no, not k-y jelly) to loosen it up. Nuttin'.
Help?

chris L 02-20-2003, 09:41 AM why not use the k-y ? are you afraid to go back to the store to get more ?
try twisting the 2 sections right at the connection .
Ron Arra 02-20-2003, 10:48 AM Ben, Try applying ice to it.....I use to have this problem frequently with my Zziplex tournament rods.
Sweetieface 02-20-2003, 10:56 AM Don't feel bad,
I was in the parking lot at Sports Authority, trying to get the rod apart so I could put it in my car.
Good thing the guy in the car next to me was watching, and probably laughing hysterically, but he helped me seperate it by using a HeMan pull. Got that sucker apart finally!
What an idiot I must have looked like, tugging away at this little white fishing rod I just bought, swearing to myself...
Christian 02-20-2003, 11:05 AM to people pulling in opposite directions normally works for me.
Get yourself some Zep-45. Spray a few drops at the connection, leave standing upright for a few hours. Use this stuff on frozen/rusted parts from reels on up to dozers and other heavy equipment. $$$ but works like a charm.
bloocrab 02-20-2003, 11:12 AM weewee...
what type of connection is it?
Meaning, metal to metal....if so, the ice should help. If not metal, go the opposite way...apply heat. NOT TOO MUCH of course :)
...and try using some kitchen JAR helpers. You know, those circular rubber thingys that you use to open the peanut butter jar before calling the dog.
...W-D should work good though, especially if you stand the rod up correctly...like alr suggested. Give it time......it t'ain't spring yet me boy.......or are you still heading South - - . . . .. ........

Hiya Ron! Thanks...I'll remember this when my Zziplexes get stuck together too.
BTW, got time this Spring for a tune-up?

fishweewee 02-20-2003, 11:28 AM Bloo-
I tried using a small strap wrench to apply torque to the sections. They wouldn't budge. Even after the WD-40 and the K-Y jelly. ;)
Not planning on going south this Spring ... going NORTH! :D

Saltheart 02-20-2003, 12:00 PM Ice cube on the inside piece below the joint , hot facecloth over the outside part of the joint. get the rubber jar openers and after the ice and hot water simultaniously for about two minutes , pull and twist at same time. I wouldn't use a wrench. You could cause a torsional failure. A permanent one piece is better than a broken two piece! good luck.

...and I thought I was rough on my gear!!!;) :D :D :D
UserRemoved1 02-20-2003, 12:37 PM 2 hands and a kneecap works too Ben :p
fishweewee 02-20-2003, 12:45 PM Dude, I dunno. It's a Lami Tri-Flex, the thing is friggin' indestructable. I think I'd break my knee first. :smash:

chris L 02-20-2003, 02:07 PM dont forget the sledge and vise !
HESH2 02-20-2003, 02:26 PM GET A HAIR DRYER AND APPLY HEAT AT BIGGER END AND AFTER A FEW MINUTES LETS IT COOL A LITTLE THEN PULL AND TWIST THEN IT WILL COME APART.NOW IF EVER A 2 PIECE ROD BECOMES TOO LOOSE COAT FEMALE END WITH BEE'S WAX AND THAT WILL GIVE A TIGHT FIT.HAVE USED BOTH WITH 100% RESULTS
fishweewee 02-20-2003, 02:31 PM Uuuhhhhhhhhh....

bloocrab 03-29-2003, 01:12 AM ...so what worked for ya?
fishweewee 03-29-2003, 06:23 AM Hot (top) & cold (bottom) applied at the ferrules, then I had a friend help me GENTLY twist the two sections apart. Next time before I head out with this rockpile "walking stick" I'll use a little ferrule wax beforehand.:D
shore manic 03-29-2003, 06:54 AM well slip wins again. a wealth of fishing knowledge has helped again.slip i was at the striper swiper booth talking to van when steve in mass said there's a bunch of guys from S-B but didn't get a chance to meet ya. figured a slipknot would be some old guy with long hair and a beard. was i wrong!! kind of funny how you picture guys and gals online, then when you meet them it's like totally opposite of what you thought!! any way thanks for the info on stuck rods.
Slipknot 03-29-2003, 10:54 AM What did I win? I didn't even post on this thread.
But while I'm here, JPowers told me about bowstring wax for the ferrules, try it it might work well.
Most of what I learned came from the fishing forums and trying it out, then I pass it back on to others. I just enjoy the heck out of fishing. Some old long haired guy huh? naww, I'm almost Steve in Mass's age. I'm not a Jerry Garcia looking hippy. If you look around the site I'm sure there are more than one pic of me thanks to BM:smash:
Maybe you'll come to one of the four legs and we can put a face with the name:)
Homerun04 03-29-2003, 12:07 PM FWW - I use to have similar problem......here's how I avoid it now.....first, I take a bar of soap and rub/apply a good coating to the male section of the rod prior to putting the two ends together. And I ALWAYS seperate my rods after I wash them (religiously after each trip -- no matter what). Never had the problem since.......:smash:

Hey, wait a minute, how'd I get into this? (oops, nevermind, I see the reference now)....;)
Besides, I hardly got any hair left for it to be long anymore.....though if ya saw pictures of me back from the 70's, you'd say "Who's that hippy freak"......oh, wait a minute, that would be Chris "I95" L.....:p
Shore - Slip is the kinda guy that the minute you meet him, you can't help but take a liking to him.......I even showed my wife just a picture of him once, and she liked him.....must be the dimples....;)
