I was at Ocean Fresh Seafood on route 1 in North Attleboro and thehy has striper filets for sale. They were about 18 inches long. clearly illegal size fish. Is there some regulation that allows them to sell baby stripers or should I call DEM. Either way I told the the store manager that is bull %$%$%$%$.

Probably farm raised Striped-bass White Bass hybrids

Most likely they were either farm raised or come from a state that allows taking fish that size. They can sell smaller fish in MA if they are not caught here. (yet another screwy law associated with commercialism and SB)

When I was living in VA I ordered a fish dish and a 9" whole striper was on my plate. (I measured it) I could not bring myself to eat it.

I bet they are farm raised. The big Asian market in Quincy has a tank with dinks swimming around, supposedly farm raised as well.

When the SF bill passes, farm raised fish for sail will be required to have a tag.

Not sure where the fish are from but when the Virginia season opens:

Virginia Commerical regulations:

Except as may be adjusted pursuant to 4VAC20-252-150, the open commercial striped bass fishing seasons, areas, and applicable size limits shall be as follows:

1. In the Chesapeake area, the open commercial season shall be from February 1 through December 31, inclusive. The minimum size limit shall be 18 inches total length during the periods of February 1 through December 31. The maximum size limit shall be 28 inches from March 26 through June 15.

2. In the coastal area, the open commercial season shall be February 1 through December 31, inclusive, and the minimum size limit shall be 28 inches total length.

I would bet that these are legal wild stripe bass. The Maryland season is presently open and the minimum size is 18". Maryland had to close the gill net season on 1/11 because they were catching so many fish it was depressing the price. It reopens on 1/18.

Which makes you wonder whether the method being used is so good
or the numbers of fish are the reason they are catching so many.

I went over there and tried to take a picture and they threw my ass out of the store and threatened to call the police. I am calling DEM today.

I wouldn't make a big deal out of it

I doubt they are holdover locally caught bass illegally kept and sold to them.
Most likely came from out of state.

buy some and try it

if they keep netting the babies like they do down in the chesapeake, we will be noticing fewer and fewer schoolies each year like we have.

that's interesting because I just saw an episode of "Chopped" on the Food Network and one of the ingredients was striped bass and they all looked no larger than 18 inches, so prob from Chessapeak area (the show is shot in NY)

I used to go to Montauk every year in the fall. At that time of year there are stripers everywhere. Despite the easy availability of stripers in the ocean , a fish market right there in Montauk used to sell very short farm raised stripers. Some of them were only a little over a foot long.

Farm raised but they need to be tagged.

They are supposed to be tagged now. I emailed back and forth with the lady who is head of DFW and she sent someone to check on the fish that were written about in a Globe magazine article and she emailed me back that they all were tagged. She was very quick about it also. Said she had many calls from interested people after the arrticle appeared.

Supposedly, the farm raised stripers taste better than the wild caught ones. They may be cheaper for the fish markets, too.

I watched the episode of Dirty Jobs on Discovery channel about the striper farm and those fish looked a lot like juveneille stripers in the wild. I wouldn't base anything on whether the stripes were continuous or broken, either.

Lastly, Ocean Fresh is a pretty big company with a good reputation. I doubt they'd risk getting in trouble over some small striped bass.

yes ,that is my understanding that the hybrids dark stripes are indeed broken...

yes, to your second question but farm raised means the "farm" is usually close to the ocean to have a supply of fresh water on hand.
fresh meaning :point: non polluted by fish waste...

i agree Slipknot...how is it that netted fish can be sold cheaper than farm raised?

Here's a pic of a farm raised striper. Note the solid stripes.

One of the biggest farms for stripers is located in the desert in Arizona. They use filtered water, so they don't need to be anywhere near the ocean.

as afar as i'm concerned, farm raised anything dosn't taste as good as wild. bass, salmon, mushrooms whatever. wild has more flavor.

i worked in aquaculture for almost ten years. farm raised means land, permits, taxes, electricity, food, labor, transportation....so much more. i tried to start a scallop farm in ct. i needed 8 permits before i was allowed to begin sales. federal, state and local. needless to say, there are no scallop farm in ct.

I am quite sure the "broken stripes" theory of telling whether a bass is a hybrid or farm raised is just a wives tail. I have caught many a striper that have had this and I am pretty sure that I heard from apretty good source that this "broken stripes" theory is false. Wish I could remember where I heard/read this.
