Same thing when its from a boat :D - throw on a 3oz Hopkins with a big dull trebble and go trolling for lines :D :D :D

Funny polls even though I see an anti-surfcasting tendancy :laughs:

I admire you guys. I'm a big guy who it took a while to realize no matter what side of a fight I'm on I probably wasn't going to win. I guess I'd have to take the stance of being the "bigger man" of expressing my opinion and just letting it go and moving somewhere else. Takes a real DB to do something like that anyway so I guess it would be obvious to the other shoremen what kind of person he was. But just cause someone like that can live with themselves and their actions doesn't mean in my mind they'll ever be more than the sleaze bag they are.

You must fish the west wall in may?? Don"t know why but when I get crowed like that I just forget how to cast and we get tangled and tangled and tangled they sometimes get the hint but you know most don"t even know they are doing wrong. So my vote goes to number1

First I'd proceed to edumacate the offender, then if it's painfully obvious the he/she is experienced enough to know better then I take out the knife and start cutting lines. After losing a few plugs, they won't be sticking around much longer.
If they pull out a gun or something, I duck and run for cover:)

Sometimes you can just keep on catching while they don't hook up at all, now that is funny.

J Habs, I hope your back is ok:(

Happens in my boat all too frequently, theres a guy with a red Sea Craft that has dropped anchor on a spot I'm working too many times to count. I guess if your a guide that gives you a license to be rude and drop your hook where you feel like it. If the spots hot and I know I'm not going to be able to work it the same after someone sets up camp, you bet your *ss I'll have a few choice words for "Captain" before I move on. Lifes to short to start swinging over a fish or two, but I will let a guy know I think he's a a-hole.

ShoreM:

You are right about that, weekends are the worst. I've been in huge schools of fish with almost 100 other boats.
I just move to the edge, keep my distance, and hope for the best.

If it gets real crazy i move on.

But you are right, they are everywhere. I have many-a-story..:af:

Sometime over a beer when i have about 3-6 hours I can go through some of them !!!!!

Although I know this,,, the ocean is a BIG place, I've been into non-stop fish for hours on end, with no-one around for miles.
Those are the sweet days.....

PAINT BALLS !!!! GREAT IDEA, sometimes a surface to surface stinger missle would be nice too!!!!!

on the subject of surfcaster etiquette for spot taking, it depends on a lot of things. one being how crowded the spot/area is, how the fishing is, my mood, and if the person saw me there already. usually, i just go right next to them and as close to my original spot as possible while purposely cast badly hooking their line. if we happend to tangle a few times i might have to cut their line to get the leader out. i then give them their leader back and say i had to cut his line. if they go to retie, i go right back to my spot. i will try and make my best effort to make a wide swing in my pendulum w/ a 6' leader trail to see how they likes the sound of that by their ear. if they ask first before taking the spot, i might give it to them and move down. if it's a young lad, i'll move down to another spot or go over to them and ask them how they are doing and even assist. i've caught my share and don't mind standing back to some of the older or younger anglers.

surfcasting etiquette seems to have definitely gone downhill nowadays in the surf. between people puking up info on fishing success and spots, crowds have increased in areas that should get little attention.

I think the best thing is to politely ask them to move on. If they don't get it, wade out in front of them, far enough that you would'nt hurt them if you are casting. If you make contact with someone while casting, and you are trying to get elbow room, it could be construed as assault and battery. You could then find yourself in som doo doo.

or, the lack thereof, moreso these days....

If I am fishing in front of my camper, it's pretty simple,
"Hey, get outa my yard" in a very stern voice. I am no threat,
but there is strength in #'s in that case.

It doesn't usually happen when I'm really fishing, that is, hunting the beach in my 150. I know the spots I want to hit, if they are crowded, I'll move on. If I do get the rude one who happens upon me, and jumps in my grave, I'll do like Slip said, try the nice talk, if that is to no avail, I get in the truck and leave... Oh, I forgot to mention, I make sure I turn the truck around SLOWLY, with the HIGH BEAMS on facing the water and the offender.
I think they get my message after that :p

Had to go down with a snow shovel to dig out a bud foolish to try going for a look the other day, first big drift, tried to bulldog thru, unh-unh... nothing but taillights sticking out of the drift.

There are many areas that can only be fished two or three people max, and if one of those fishers is a newbee or just an a$$ Ooo, chit usualy getts ugly.

Story Time:)

so............one summer morning myself and buddie got up early to scup fish. we where there either at dark or sunrise, its a bit of a walk to this area, it has a small strech of rocks that stick out, on one side its rocky and the other(scup side)its not. After being there for a while i could see two guys headed in our direction. There are fishable waters at least 100 yrds before they reached us, they had walked right to our spot. Slowly they took off the rubba bands off there rods(i ain't got nuttin agains rubba bands) and they did everything slowly.

I was in my late 20's and they where mid 40's or 50... then they proceeded to cast directly over my head....let me tell you ''chit hit the fan''. I yelled... "I'm gonna cut your f'in line... break your f'in rods... who in the f do you think you are". I though I was going to blow a blood vessel.....I'm not chitin you. I continued fishing, witching the whole time, I told'em...... had you got your ass's outa bed earlyer you would have had this spot to yourselfs, he replied.... you think you own the ocean , your gonna tell me when to get outa bed..... to avoid doing something I would regret and have to live with for the rest of my live...... I pulled my rods out and left. I remember the bite had died. I've gotten into red tape with simular situations in the past and handled them a whole lot better....after that day I've changed my out look on dusty pole fisherman. I gotta admit I lost my cool and the old boys kept there's ...so who had best morning...the guy with the stress free fishin...it ain't always about catchin fish.

"uffah!!"

This poll has been an eyeopener for me. I was under the impression that as Boat guy, I had to put up with more crap. But after reading these posts, and with the little surf fishing experince I have, I can see that you surf guys have to put up with the same BS I do. I went surfishing 4 times last year and yes, one time I had to deal with a claim jumper. I just walked right up to him shoulder to shoulder and chucked my lure. He moved on. I was pissed for a second though. On the boat I fished 40 times or so and had 4 incidents 2 claim jumpers and 2 masters of the sea driiving over my bait. Precentage wise 10% bs factor on the boat and a 25% bs factor surfcasting.

Well as a boat guy the only thing I hate is thew a hole who is fishing a drift and you are also drifting then it is time for him to move as you are still drifting and he puts the dam thing full throttle and flys about 10 feet from you Knocking the sh#t out of everthing in your boat. I had one such #$#$ last year do this to me 3 times when I lost it. I got my boat going waited for himm to get comfy and then I went and did about 5 circles around him causing a reel uncomfertabl drift to him. Then i told him you rock me even a little one more time today I will sink that $%T$# Boat with you in it. well he was gone after that. That was the 1 weekend day I fished last year. And I then rembered why I don't fish weekends.

Duke, macajoe and you other boaters:

There is a good article in the OTW special edition (picked it up at the boatshow) on TROLLING ETIQUETTE...

Couple of stories in there too, all rings the same to what has been discussed here.

Its agreed then,,, there are a-holes by land and by sea.....
