Hey Guys,
Wondering if there Is any productive "fake" herring imating baits?
since you can only get 10 herring perday/angler and they are probably hard to find--keep alive, etc.

Can any of you suggest any herring imataton soft-plastics or lures or something?

i'm NOT asking for secret spots , Just want to know if there is any productive herring baits out there..

thanks guys!

wild eyes, the big ones in the herring like colors. atoms swimmers, pikies (i like blue/white or white), poppers, crippled herrings, cast masters, hopkins, rapala also makes a big shad rap for saltwater that is great but its a little hard to cast. anything that looks like a herring and acts sort of like one works.

I have a crippled herring-- how would you fish it? just reel in or flip, tug etc? remember i am new to saltwater (sort of) this is my first herring run hunting season....i never done this before so any help is wanted

not asking for spots- i already know of a few :D

BM, please check your PMs and get back to me.

how big is the crippled you have?
i just cast out and reel em in just like any spoon. i like to put a soft plastic curly tail on that single hook they come with.
they're also good for jgging off a boat or pier w/ deep water. they tend to snag though. i normally use the 2 and 3 ozers. in this deep spot in the harbor i use a 7oz for huge blues.

Get a 7" blue back/white belly Mambo Minnow.

The 7" black back and silver belly (all-metal ones) are great herring imitators too.

Bassmaster's pikies work like magic - if you can get your hands one them but $100/pop they're probably out of your reach.

$100. for a plug??????????? Oh my god, are you kidding?? i hope you are.

anyone who buys a plug like that has to be a millionare- snagging that would SUCK!!!

i could imagine $40 maybe even $50. but not $100.
=------------------------------------------------------------------

What size jig heads should i buy for them minnows?
were can i find 'em?

okay, you guys, show me your best herring imitation.

when it's light out, does a herring zig?

when it's dark out, does a herring zag?

do herring dream?

what do they dream of, plankton?

how big are herring brains?

do i talk too much?

I know a guy who went to the canal last year in the heat of the run, he fished with the biggest wild eyes in pearl and I think bunker, he was able to keep up with the guys using live herring, So he says :btu: . I wast there so I don't know but I do think the wild eyes have great/lifelike action... I do not like crippled herring I think the name is very misleading... they do not imitate herring well at all, in my opinion.

They look great, catch fish and fisherman, I won't buy any more of the larger ones till they do something about that weak tail.

Christian

goose,
i thread some thin eletrical copper wire through the tail and wrap it around the hook a few times, seamed to hold up better than the others did. those tail just randomly come off sometimes, and if your fishing in rocky area the "mouth part that is molded in gets all chewed up by the banging around, i still love those things though.
have you seen the ones with trebles on their belly yet?

I didn't put in alot of time with those wild eyes, specialy after loosing tails. I've had better success with rubba shad.(niner rig type)

That's smart way to save your rubba.

trebles on their belly?? not yet
