when does the bite pick up in the spring? is there a magic water temp for them? i heard that there mouths are softer in the spring should i still use green crabs or switch up the bait?

The bait thing is BS. Your fishing buzzards bay throw that out the window, they show up they're on crabs. Do NOT fish fall spots unless your fishin from shore, they move in close and the bite for what ever reason is 1-2 hrs after dawn and 1-2hrs before dusk when best. Think shallow and rocky. usually may 10th its on.

thanks goose. will they be as densely packed as the fall or more spread out? when do they breed and where? don't really want to beat on them when they are trying to get their groove on

I,ll outfish anybody in Narragansett bay in the spring with all soft baits / real shallow / less rocky in the fall ;

Yet the fall / its crabs / gren & asian ....with the asian being the hot bait .
all real rocky . & shallow to deep to deeper ;;

I respectively disagree Mike. Yes they eat sea worms and necks and tongues but they're primary diet consists of crabs and imo its all in how you feed it to'um. Peel the shell trim the legs and half a body on a hook you will murder them. When you take that shell off it visibly brighter, smells better..they crunch through the shell for the meat,, that's why many guys like the fiddlers...imo not because its necessarily better bait its because its candy. Also, that size bait attracts big white chinners too. When they show up inshore they eat crabs.
Not really sure about the breeding. I do know the comm. season is early and the quota full quite fast. They are as stacked as in the fall just not in the same areas. Those middle of the bay spots are dead. Rocky shore lines in the far N side buzz bay heat up first.

I remember something about when the dogwoods bloom. The whole crab thing is BS, but partly because most places can't get crabs in the early spring and it's not worth keeping them around.

Look for the rocky ledges or large boulders up inside Cleveland Ledge and out in front of the Wareham River. Usually the lobster pots will put you right where you want to be. Shallow water 10-15 feet has worked for me with green crabs being the go to bait.

I keep saying I'll give it a shot at the former homestead area and have yet to follow through.This Spring though.

Never had great luck with them in the spring but always enjoy
being back on the water. Will have to try some different areas this year I have always fished my same fall spots.

I'm hoping to try my hand at landing a few this spring from the kayak. Don't know a single thing about fishing for them though.
