I was told the postitive aspects of a higher gear ratio 2.5/1 meaning 2.5 prop turns for every turn the motor makes.

What are the down sides to a gear ratio of 2.5/1 ?

Are there any "hidden costs" when repowering that caught any of you off guard?

Yamaha 4strokes go from 115hp right to 200hp none inbetween.
All dealers say "I'm going to be honest with you".
I think $12 to park in a lake is a bit expensive.

That would be 2.5 revolutions of the engine before your prop completes one (otherwise your prop would be doing 15000 RPMS at 6K on the engine. This allows a a longer "screw" in propping, better holeshot...

More info more questions, I just looked at the suzuki site and here is there sales pitch around the gear ratio:
2.38:1 gear ratio lets the DF140 turn a big prop for instant acceleration and phenomenal top-end performance.

It's not true to say 1 turn of the engine produces 2.38 turns of the prop?

2.38 to 1 gear ratio : for every time the prop turns, the engine will have gone 2.38 revolutions :D I fit were the other way it would be something like 1 to 0.42 ratio for 1 turn of the engine yielding .42 turns of the prop. One hell of an underdrive :)

This is just a couple of things I think I know (pricing is highly secretive!). Take 10-15% off the MSRP for the street price. Take 30% off the MSRP for the dealers cost.

Hidden costs-- Prop, rigging, gauge options. If you stick with the same brand motor, the steering and throttle cables should work, but might not.

I like to flush the motor after each use but only because it is easy to do. The Yamaha people said it is good to do but not needed each time . Then there are those that keep there boats out on mourings that I know that do not flush them all season and do not seem to have any trouble. Hey Clammer do you flush the motor each time at the dock????????

I keep my boat at a slip and I do flush the motor out, i'm lucky to have fresh water right there. I don't flush it each and everytime I use it but I try to when I can. I do know when I dropped the boat off for winter service I was told that the motor looked great, and everything was clean....I would suggest if you can flush, do it.....

i put the muffs on and rinse it out 9 out of 10 times black dirt like stuff comes out i dont know where it comes from but after a couple seconds nice clean water flows i feel alot better knowing its clean!!!

The Suzuki has two places flush, a hose attachment that you screw into and DON'T run the motor, and using the muffs as you would on any outboard. The expert from the Suzuki plant recommended flushing with the muffs if you can. But I've also heard from an outboard mechanic using the muffs is a motor killer (he might be looking for future business). I've always used the muffs after each use and had no issues.

Like 179, when I am in the slip, I have a flushing port at the back of the powerhead. I hook up fresh water and tilt it out of the salt while the water is on. That way, I know its clean.

I would clean it every time. Can't heart to flush out corrosives.

Hey Clammer do you flush the motor each time at the dock???????? He'll say "What's a flush"
