View Full Version : Bow hunting/ Archery Book
NE-Stripes 03-15-2010, 07:21 AM Can any one recommend a good bow hunting/ slash archery book. My nephew wants to try bow hunting and having very little bow knowledge, I am a shotgun hunter I was hoping to find a good book for him or even me. Or perhaps there is a good shop in the area SE mass that would have a range where he could get some pointers.
Thanks for any help.
Team rock 03-21-2010, 10:00 AM It`s not that no one has a book to offer, but no surgestion!
I`am self trained, I was in a real bow camp my first 15 yrs. No radio no tv no wife`s etc An excilent chef, and a few drunks. I can only say that the Tv shows are typically product promotion but you will get some idears. Also try some magazine.
On a another note it typically takes a good [hard worker] 10years for there first deer, and an adverage hunter will never see a ture Boone Crocket [sp?]. And few will ever shoot [or see] 180 class or better. 200 near impossible to get a sight of, but i have friends that got em! However location location location, on Long Island a 120 class is great at 95lbs. However there are guys I know that will not shoot anything less!! They hunt corn farms use cameras and do there homework 12 months of the year. And than there`s alway Mr Lucky! As Tred Barta says if you stand in the woods long enough a deer will run into you! lmfao. Ture, I know.
The must!
Good camo , I use a gilly suit and can wear anything under as needed.
Practice over and over, I shoot 4 or 5 times a week for 3 months before and the 3 months we hunt. Surgesting, you join a range you learn from great shooter "they will offer help" just like in fishing.
Get in a tree stand 1 hour [plus] befor light, I seen many deer befor light [while car doors are slaming] as the bucks get bigger, they get smarter, and like a 20 yr old guy, they will be hanging where the girls [does] are when in heat [rutting]. I hunt no less than 18 feet high, but try to get up as high as 25`.
Just like cow hunting [striper] it`s a little diff than every day Striper fishing, guys that get 50lbers didn`t get em sitting on the couch! or luck
Learn your area, equipment, deer movment and mostly be safe, 1 of ever 4 hunter will fall from a tree stand, 1 in ever 10 falls are deadly.
Someone will in there opinion might say some thing diff, but this is a start.
But these general rules work for me in my area. I am not bragging just shareing my hard earned time/work 26 deer includes a 10, 7, 6 x6`s a few spikes the bal doe which taste the best , 2 bear [not over bait] real huntin 255lbs and
242lbs in NY . I not only seen many 180+ but miss 3 [one which was 14 and may of went 200+ never to be seen again.
Few people got it natureally [I`am not one] and there is no subtute for exsprience, good hard work = good hard rewards fishing or hunting. If you love trophy hunting for fish you will love deer hunting. Your first score will be the high of high, take picture make notes and again be safe!
likwid 04-02-2010, 10:51 AM Tactics? Same as shotgun.
Camo? There's guys that hunt in Carharts in PA. That should tell you something.
Scentblocker/Scentkiller clothing is a scam.
The washes are also a scam. Use 29mules Arm & Hammer or any hypoallergenic wash that doesn't have perfumes or uv brighteners in it.
Would I say it'll take you 10 years to get your first deer? Not if you scout hard and learn what you're looking for and at.
Plenty of hunting and archery forums out there with some GREAT advice to hit up. archerytalk is one, lots of opinions but you can pinch out good and bad info pretty easily and LOTS of people from EVERY area that are willing to give you good sound advice.
Most importantly, get the right draw, get the bow tuned, get some shooting advice, and shoot till your back wants to kill you.
Optional but FUN!: Find a club with a 3d course.
NE-Stripes 04-05-2010, 08:02 AM Thanks for the advise, plan to hit a few shops with the nephew soon.
I certainly hope it dose not take ten years for the first deer. It did not take that long before the first shotgun deer, granted I had some help but they were pretty short shots I would say bow range or close to it. I would think the bow guys have a little advantage in that they get in the woods before us shotgun hackers start clomping around. That being said I am sure the elements have a much greater affect on the bow than the shotgun. Should prove to be interesting.
Team rock 04-05-2010, 03:59 PM Yes I hope it dosen`t take your nephew but the first week. Again adv is, but that being said. I kill several deer in less than 5 yrs with the bow and it took around 10 with the gun. Location location location is where it`s at, in Mecca the deer are all over, to you have a bow and walk into the woods. And the funny thing is you will met alotta people whom scored fast so that bring up the #`s for those that took longer. Do your home work and you will beat the odds. Good luck and please post your progress
Hookedagain 04-06-2010, 08:15 AM Theres a very good book called The bowhunters Bible. It covers the bow and its setup, the archer and his form, the arrows and why you use what you do and so on...and so on. Soft cover, pretty big book and worth the $$. Also, in S E Ma there are a couple acrhery shops. Fall River has Trader Jans, see Jill. She is a Jr. Olympic archer and also the owner. She know what shes doing. In Middleboro theres Ready's. Also has a bunch of guys the are second to none, very knoledgeable. Both shops have a good selection of bow and acces. and both have an indoor range. Good Luck!!
likwid 04-10-2010, 09:05 AM I've heard good things about Ready's.
TheSpecialist 04-11-2010, 08:26 AM Come down to Reedy's, Chris is one of the nicest guys around and his customer service is second to none. If more companies had customer service like his there would never be a need for people to shop elsewhere. We shoot on monday nights. If you go in and tell them you never shot a bow before and were interested, they will get a bow setup for you to shoot, teach you how to shoot it, and have you in the bullseye in about 20 minutes of shooting.

When I end up back in MA I'm really gonna miss my shop out here.
Smith Point in Patchogue is seriously one of the best shops ever.
Heard my first authentic fuggedaboutit there. :rotf2:
