Actually the plug is made from sign board. Very light weight and makes a very lively plug. I contacted an online sign board company and they were offering the board in three different densities. I got a free trial pack of three boards, one in each density. This one was made from the highest density board they offered. http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac167/alphabaits/cpbass001.jpg http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac167/alphabaits/cpbass004.jpg Backbeach Jake 03-21-2010, 05:46 PM Wow! Back Beach 07-08-2010, 07:16 AM Both. Good lord, you've got Backbeachitis.(Actually my form of suffering is worse as you inexplicably catch nothing at all while others around you tong away) There is really no known cure for this as prayer, plugbuilding, and community service are simply feelgood elixirs and have no measurable effects. My advice is to simply state you don't fish anymore due to family, work, and personal issues. Eventually, and the day will come, you'll sneak out the door way past midnight, undetected by the masses, eels in hand, and within a few short hours all will be right again...keep the bag on your head though if you decide to collect photo proof of this phenomenon. Dave Peros 07-13-2010, 10:35 AM Actually, eels are even being snubbed with all the pogies being chummed about in the sounds and around the Elizabeths. Probably my personal best on a plug now that I think of it. I was trolling T&W and saw a little action on top at daybreak. Only had a glorified fluke set up, not thinking I was going to do any plugging, but it got the job done, got 4 more, all nice, in all on top. Only have a cell camera pic and i have no idea how I would even get it off there considering that was first time I ever used it. Probably didn't even come out. Real nice morning yesterday as I was only one out there for most of morning but over by 8 am as it has been all season in that neck of woods. 3 charter boats took over at that time and I went home. Here is Bill at his lathe (a 50 year old Craftsman) and a stubby needlefish (copied from the Dave Anderson Fisherman 2007 article), and the 30 inch striper (one of many up to 34 inches ) I caught on MV with it in August. He also does great darters that have worked on Wasque last year and also worked fine on Cutty this year along with Tattoo and Big Fish metal lipped swimmers I used. He has done a fine knock off of the Big Fish Pencil (thanks Larry- I still buy and catch on the originals as well). He has made me great needles from 4 inches to 10 inches and pencils as well as metal lipped swimmers and great polaris poppers. He also has created a great squid, fashioned after one I saw in an On The Water article (one is hanging up at the Cutty Hunk Fishing Club). Bill loves talking plugs at the MSBA Expo or Tri State banquets. He uses the plastic eyes with anchor stems he or I pick up at M&D's. Over the last 10 years he has become very fancy with his painting almost always putting a splash of red below the lure mouth/ gill area. He uses a clear coat epoxy resin we learned about at the plug builders forum. I can only take credit for making the lures work, he gets all the credit for creating them. There is something special I feel every time I catch a fish on one of his lures (and luckily that is quite often). I did get one about 35# on an eel the first night though...everything else came on wood. Here's the musso sr...it held up real well, but a large bluefish took a big chunk out of it. Lose the barbs, Mike. I mean it, seriously. You don't need them, particularly on large fish. You'll drop a few fish when they switch directions in close, but it beats hell out of having to go to an ER from where you sometimes fish. Also, if you are out on a rock, try a small lip gaff. Makes life much simpler. Nice plug, by the way, very nice. ProfessorM 09-14-2010, 11:18 AM Just teasing, Paul. Your word is almost as good as your plugs with me. LOL. You'll drop a few fish when they switch directions in close, but it beats hell out of having to go to an ER from where you sometimes fish. Also, if you are out on a rock, try a small lip gaff. Makes life much simpler. Nice plug, by the way, very nice. I actually have a sinister plan in mind next to crushing the barbs. An old comrade of mine used to hand line commercially for striped bass way back off the Nantucket and Monomoy rips. One time he showed me a bunch of his plugs rigged up with 5/0 and 6/0 siwash hooks...he said the trebles would straighten out under the strain of the 600# hand line, so he put big singles on and the problem was solved. You'll miss a few more fish I'm sure, but a real large fish would have no problem taking everything down and unhooking would be much easier and safer. Landing a big fish in current would be much more likely too as you can apply much more pressure to the siwash hooks. You would likely cull out the smaller fish as they wouldn't be hooked as easily and damaged, which brings up a problem: Despite the fun I had recently I put back a lot of real small fish that were severely damaged due to the treble hooks. There were punctured eyes, gills, and open gashes on many of them after the battle which I regret...there is a lot to be said for single hook fishing(eels, jigs, shads, etc.) in terms of releasing fish in good shape as one single penetration in the mouth area has to be better than mulitple site punctures inflicted by trebles...just a thought. Gonna re-rig the big swimmers this week with singles and see what happens. Diggin Jiggin 09-14-2010, 12:07 PM Had some good outings in the last week. I put the mack colored pichney sand eel on and the fish couldn't keep off it... I eventually lost the plug on a RI rock...:crying: The white worked well also. Next night I fished the 8" musso sr. slopehead and caught fish practically every cast for two hours.:fishin: No pics of the fish, but had close to 20 fish up to 20# on it. Funny thing was I couldn't get a touch with an eel and went to the plug...I then hit paydirt. Can't believe what I was missing until I started building and fishing my own plugs...I'm gonna piss myself If I have any more fun...:uhuh: Not if you're in your wetsuit :) Back Beach 09-14-2010, 12:43 PM Dave, You're a very consciencious observer.:laugha: Back Beach 09-15-2010, 09:40 AM nice plugs and fish mike, you could use tags on the rear ends to eliminate a few of the points. Does it seem unusual for the amount of paint to come off that's shown in my picture? Seems like the VMC's are so sharp they just pluck the paint right off and puncture the sys3 pretty easily. I got about 20 fish on that plug, so I figured the damage wasn't too bad given the number of fish I took on it. Plus, a giant bluefish mangled the thing pretty badly. No, they don't look bad to me for twenty fish. numbskull 09-28-2010, 02:43 PM Here's one from a few weeks ago (when I still knew how to fish) that ate a Tagger needle......... the best needle I've ever fished (although his large ones are damn good, too). numbskull 09-28-2010, 02:49 PM A similar sized fish from the summer (one of only a few I found) that ate one of those parrot musso clone darters I carry on about. islander 09-29-2010, 04:56 AM Nice fish numbskull 10-02-2010, 04:51 PM Good day today. Best fish came on one of BigFish Larry's early pencils. 24#. Thanks Larry (and Matt, who gave it to me). numbskull 10-03-2010, 01:11 PM Bad today. But the one fish I found was decent. Yellow large Donny clone surface swimmer. islander 10-04-2010, 04:38 AM Nice fish, You earned those especially with H pressure right on top of us and NNW wind, nice job Bronko 10-04-2010, 06:29 AM Great stuff George! Back Beach 10-04-2010, 08:13 AM Bad today. But the one fish I found was decent. Yellow large Donny clone surface swimmer. Poor dog looks like he has to go to the bathroom and you're caught up taking pictures... Sea Dangles 10-04-2010, 01:01 PM Yup,tail position gives it away. ProfessorM 10-06-2010, 06:59 PM nice job George. Was that the day Art was over there too? He told me you got a good one. ProfessorM 10-09-2010, 01:37 PM well not all lures are made of wood. Friend and MV resident just sent me this pic from today. numbskull 10-10-2010, 01:13 PM You left too soon :smash: numbskull 10-10-2010, 01:16 PM Just for interest. Note the color of the plug and time of day. ProfessorM 10-10-2010, 02:20 PM neat. funny as I had my best luck trolling tubes this year using black, which I always use at nite, but did real good during daylight hours too. JohnnySaxatilis 10-10-2010, 09:26 PM its nice when you come back from somewhere havent fished in 2 weeks and get hit by this little guy the first cast. all were about that size tonight. same Rickski metal lip. sweet paint job. olive pink scale to white belly and red chin splash:love: chrisjoe13 10-11-2010, 09:57 AM Here's the plug that was working the other night. (fish pics in habs tally thread). These little plugs have broken many a skunk. Weighs about 1.6oz, made of maple, casts a mile, and will reach the bottom. Affectionately called: stubby squid needle. numbskull 10-11-2010, 02:50 PM Chrisjoe, this fish? Very cool, please tell more. Tail-weighted? Also, I'd be interested to hear how you fish them deep. numbskull 10-11-2010, 04:46 PM Spent the day slumming with lowlife from Franklin and eating P&J chew toys. Prof M with a lido flaptail fish (after he shed 3 larger ones). BB with a slim danny fish (before he nailed a much bigger one). Pretty plugs, ugly mugs. ANY LUCK? 10-11-2010, 04:50 PM These two 30s were caught on a custom made gold and copper stubby squid needle made by ChrisJoe13. Both were PBs ... in the same night! chrisjoe13 10-11-2010, 06:46 PM Chrisjoe, this fish? Very cool, please tell more. Tail-weighted? Also, I'd be interested to hear how you fish them deep. Yup thats the one. They are tail weighted (I roll lead flashing around a wire) and there's also some lead in front of the hook. As far as fishing them deep, they sink so I just let them. Retrieve as slow as I can bear with occasional twitch (to confirm contact). second picture is a few in need of epoxy, first is of few that have caught plenty (mostly small). Dude, epoxy those bad boys up! Let's rock them for the next trip. Also, I'd like about a dozen more: all the colors of the rainbow. Including rainbow. And wonder bread. numbskull 10-12-2010, 07:27 AM Those pictures are very helpful, ChrisJoe, I like the idea of working something that looks like a baby lobster deep. Thanks. Back Beach 10-12-2010, 08:31 AM Had it all yesterday beginning with nearly perfect weather...the fish cooperated too. Good thing Numby is one of the best guides I've ever fished with because his cooking stinks... I must say this was without a doubt the single most exciting fish I've ever taken in my life...the hit was just mind blowing as this fish of 35# or so came completely out of the water after my white danny. It reminded me of those tuna pics you see everywhere where the tuna leaps completely clear of the water while pursuing the bluefish. I was chanting like a cheerleader while Numby and ProfessorM simply chuckled...was really cool. We took a few pics, weighed it on Numby's rusty old chatillion, then set her loose. Back Beach 10-12-2010, 08:38 AM Was kind of grinning to myself when George put this thing on, but quickly crapped myself as this upper 20#, maybe 30# fish took it down like it was a twinkie just scant few feet from shore... Back Beach 10-12-2010, 08:44 AM ProfessorM raised some amazing fish on the flaptail. I've never seen one in action before, but might need to put one on my "to do" list for this winter...a couple real good fish didn't want to stay on the hook for PM, but the real thrill was watching the fish come up and take the plugs...fighting and landing them paled in comparison to some of the hookups we had. piemma 10-12-2010, 04:32 PM These two 30s were caught on a custom made gold and copper stubby squid needle made by ChrisJoe13. Those are great pics guys. I have a lot to learn @ boat fishing. Only daytime action I've ever had on plugs where with blues. Only daytime action I've ever had on plugs where with blues. I have to spend more time working during daylight. I thought you only kept plugs on the boat as a decoy so people wouldn't find out you were an eel guy. If you're gonna fish them, you need to start by untangling the big mess of plugs that you keep on your console. It's hard to fish plugs when you can't separate one from the others.:rotf2: ProfessorM 10-13-2010, 08:00 PM George...need to get me a camera...three pictures of professorM and he isn't talking in any of them...learned something today!!!!!:rotf2::rotf2::rotf2: Hey I resemble that remark. RI J. . This is the time of year you want to invest in some wood throwing. ProfessorM 10-17-2010, 05:22 PM LOL. Good for him. He needed it. He was a little bummed when I saw him last week at the canal, especially as Dave was releasing a 30 lber, and he told us he had been all over creation and hadn't had much luck. Was saying to myself today that it would have been a nice day to be out in the boat. BigFish 10-19-2010, 06:31 PM This mack "Prey" has caught many fish this season and continues to be a workhorse in my bag! It took a beating today! You can't beat catching on swimmers!!!:uhuh: numbskull 10-19-2010, 06:41 PM Still plenty of fish out there. This one took a Jigman spook copy Great design numbskull 10-24-2010, 12:57 PM Very slow going, but the few we found were good. 29.5 #, 2.75oz Gibbs clone pencil. Thank you, Stan. ProfessorM 10-24-2010, 02:19 PM Nice G. I know exactly where you are. I got a little memory left. I was wondering if you had been getting anything in your neck of the woods lately. Nutin better than getting a fish on top water, especially one that size. I hit the canal this morning before I did some family stuff . Deader than a doornail but a beauty of a morning to be out there and not more than a handful of fisherman out there. Looked like most have given up for the year. Guess I missed the memo. BigFish 10-24-2010, 02:47 PM Super nice fish George! Congrats! UserRemoved1 10-24-2010, 03:37 PM +1 for the HAT :kewl: When a loser like Sauerkraut outfishes ya, you can be sure it was the plug. Back Beach 10-28-2010, 08:25 AM This has turned out to be one of my most productive plugs. Got a bunch of fish in several different types of locations and settings..boat/shore/rocks/sand/day/night. It's a slimmed down danny style plug that weights about 2.25 oz, casts great, and has a moderate side to side action. It comes in right on top and uses a danny mid slot lip...everyting else is classified:laugha: Had a good fish on it the other night until Redlite cast over my line and %$%$%$%$ed me all up. I was able to capture a fish blowing up on it the other day though...was pretty cool.. chrisjoe13 10-28-2010, 03:37 PM The ole foul hooked through the nostril trick. I like that plug.:uhuh: numbskull 10-30-2010, 04:02 PM Be very careful, fishing Danny plugs is addictive. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
