Thinking of getting a GPS for my explorer. Can anyone recommend any makes/models, and what they cost you?

Talk about a changing industry...it's hard to keep up. No matter what you get it will be leapfrogged by Christmas...

I have a Garmin Nuvi in my truck and like it alot. But I probably have to update the road map. When traveling thru Providence the other day it had me flying over the water on when I went over the new bridge.."recalculating.." Other than that they are excellent. (stops a lot of arguments about directions)

As for price, they have many models in every price range, for a couple bills you can get a really nice one. Take a look at Amazon.com

My next vehicle will have a built in one though.

Girlfriend has the Nuvi and I use a TomTom with work. The Garmin is a great product, but the usability of the TomTom is better suited for my needs.

Run down to Best Buy or Bass Pro Shops and you can fondle a few different brands.

I heard it is not easy to update maps/info on built in car GPS? I do like being able to plug into a computer and doing all the updates.

I have the older Garmin Streetpilot 2610. I think my kids both have Nuvi's. Both have a Bluetooth function to tap into their phones?

Is the nuvi battery powered or corded and how does it attach to your vehicle?

I got my wife the Nuvi and she loves it. It can be plugged into the outlet in the car or can run on a charge. It came with a suction cup mounting bracket which attaches it to the windshield, but she usually just leaves it on the console next to her drink holder because she's so smart she doesn't need to look at it.

There is a lot more to them now than just directions. Finding the nearest restaurants, fuel or entertainment hotspot. Some have traffic reports built in and can find alternate routes based on the current reports, some play mp3s, some can even find the gas station with the cheapest prices, some even can connect to wifi signals. You can customize it a lot too...for example, You can change the voice of the person giving you directions, I prefer an the young Australian girl but my kids like "Snoop Dog" giving directions. Mr T. is cool too: FOOO! I pitty you if you miss that turn again. I have heard the "Ozzy" voice but I can't understand him and he uses the F-bomb every other word. There is also a very sultry lady voice telling me I can get my rocks off at the destination. It is endless.

I had to look at the date of this thread, I though it may be one of those ancient ones someone dug up.....

dude - How have you lived the last 5 or so years WITHOUT a gps? they are a part of my life like the internet. Anywhere I can find ATMs, gas stations, restaurants, etc. I have an old magellan one, was around $150 and my Pathfinder has a built in one. with the gps, I have found quicker ways to get to the hway from my house and a bunch of other short cuts I never would have known existed.

And yet you still managed to drive by my house twice while I was standing in my driveway waving at you. :)
