There are herring in the Canal run already--and have been at least since Monday. I've seen them with my own eyes :hihi:

This run, historically, doesn't usually begin to show until the 10th of April or so. The last few years it was more like the end of April.

This could be a sign of both a strong run this year due to the moratorium working, and of another good run of spring bass fishing :btu:

Last weekend there were fish in the ladder at the Canal. There were also a million seaguls down a ways from the run.

I hope. For the last 3 years I've been trying to land a keeper on my birthday, May 3, and it's just a little too early for a good shot.

Water temps are a bit higher than average for March and are probably more like mid-April. I know there are a lot of other factors but that portends well for JohnnyD getting a keeper on his birthday.

Let's hope the temps and winds cooperate leading up to it.

I had coffee yesterday with a friend who is also the Bourne herring agent. In the 30 years he's been patrolling the Bournedale run, he's never seen herring in there this early.

Did he mention his guesses as to the cause?

Tough to see in the picture, but a few fish @ the run last Thursday. I guess an hour or so after I was there the amount in the pool had doubled.. Good to see!

Ive heard folks call the early herring "scouts" before. Do these fish head back out to sea before spawning or are they just the first arrivals?

good luck to you sir! :fishin:

i hope that this early appearance of herring and warm water temps doesn't mean that we have a very short and fast spring run coming in which case could be over before it even begins! :smash:

LIKE ALL FIRST FISH THE SCOUTS LEAD THE WAY.BUT FOR 25YRS I'VED WATCHED THE HERRIN, THIS IS EARLY.IMO ITS FROM EARLY ICE OUT, HIGH WATER AND RAIN WATER THATS A LITTLE WARMER THAN THE GROUND WATER.THIS MAKES FOR GOOD CONDITIONS TO MOVE..... ITS TIME

Don't know when they arrived but the Weymouth herring run in Jackson Square was loaded this morning. My first time seeing them there since I moved down here. Pretty cool stuff but didn't top my breakfast at Nikos!
