View Full Version : Has anyone ever caught a BLIND striped bass?
Grampa Greg 04-27-2010, 05:12 AM Hi guys CT surfcaster here. Just wanted to say hi and start an interesting thread...
I was speaking to a seemingly knowledgeable gentleman at the Rivers End Tackle Surf Show. We were speaking about striped bass vision. He told me he "knows" that vision doesn't play much of a part in their ability to hunt. I disagree... but in any event he told me of a bass he caught that was completely blind. BOTH eyes were apparently scarred over. Has anyone experienced this as well? Better yet does someone have pictures of this or know someone with a picture of this? I don't mean one bad eye or partially scarred corneas... I mean both eyes completely missing, scarred over or completely opacified (so light could not enter the interior of the eye). I think this is an interesting topic to discuss.
Thanks Guys.
GG

SurfCaster413 04-27-2010, 05:17 PM never caught a blind one, but did catch one with half a tail
striprman 04-27-2010, 06:05 PM never caught one completely blind, caught a bunch with one "opaque" eye.
stiff tip 04-28-2010, 04:30 AM but i do see a lot of blind striperFISHERMAN:confused: (wingnuts) at the canal fishing "my" spots.......
rizzo 04-28-2010, 05:43 AM If I can recall correctly, I think mikecc took a nice one that as blind...
JohnR 04-28-2010, 06:15 AM Had a few missing eyes.
Also, seeing Clammer motoring his boat around rocks is like seeing the blind skipper drive the iron boat though the magnet field.
Raven 04-28-2010, 06:57 AM but he didn't taste like Chicken. :huh:
Dad 818 04-28-2010, 07:50 AM If by miracle I catch one, it's gotta be blind! Stupid too.
Saltheart 04-28-2010, 09:14 AM I have also had several one eyed fish. I assume a lot of them lost their eye to fish hooks , especially the multiple trbles on some lures.
I don't imagine that a blind fish lives long so the probability of catching one has to be low. .
Back Beach 04-28-2010, 11:27 AM Yes, I've gotten a few as well in addition to half tails and a couple pug nosed specimens. I also caught one that was Z shaped...I'll see if I can find the pic of it.
However, most of the fish I catch are neither blind, deformed, nor deaf, but patently stupid ...they have to be in order for me to catch one.
Clammer 04-28-2010, 12:47 PM Like B/B
I,ve caught quite a few /1 eye / missing body parts / pug nose / hump back .
caught a tautog [back in the day ] with a spear gun hole ,, completely thru it ........ it had healed perfectly ;
JohnR .. ya gott admit . its rountine by now for you .& it does equal fish ;;
Why is it the the other guys in the boat seem concerned with rock hitting .......... I will admit the one @ Cutty was way over the top & beyond ><><><:wall:
Clammer 04-28-2010, 12:49 PM oh yeah the bridge one was a classic also ;;:smash:

Hey Jake,
Do you happen to have any pictures of the "pug nose" fish? I have caught a couple of those (one was about 15 pounds, the other about 30-35) . Strange looking things, real sea monsters.
