View Full Version : Briarwood Close Permanently
Swimmer 04-27-2010, 01:35 PM Just got off the phone with the Harbormaster in Wareham, and he told me that Briarwood and the parking area is closed permanently. I said thank you without asking why and hung up. This is very discouraging. I had heard it might re-open this year. He said the Conservation Commission did this. I was wondering if MikeCC could make a call on this at it reflect on his business and he may know people in town that might actually tell him the real reason its closed.

srt44116 04-27-2010, 03:50 PM Yup cloesed until further notice, But you can still access the fishing grounds, just on the other side. Still good fishing.
BigFish 04-27-2010, 04:30 PM Hey! Buy a fishing permit....we are taking more access away!!!:fury::fury::fury::fury::fury::fury::fury:
BasicPatrick 04-28-2010, 12:24 PM Hey! Buy a fishing permit....we are taking more access away!!!:fury::fury::fury::fury::fury::fury::fury:
Does anyone know how many and if any fishermen went to the town conservation committee meeting or whatever town meeting when they made the decision to close the area. Isn't there a fishing club down that way that pays attention to what is going on? Someone had to know there was a threat to the access.
Maybe we should overwhelm the town managers office with complaint emails and phone calls. Maybe we should start alling businesses that we spend money in and let them know we won;t be ther this year because of the town closing access.
Maybe we should all hammer MA DMF with emails.
Maybe we should hammer Therese Murray the local State Senator with emails
Then again we could just complain on the internet and loose more and more access.
Democracy is not a spectator sport and if we don't show up we loose.
whiplash 04-28-2010, 01:42 PM You can fish it , you just can't drive to it anymore. You'll need to park on RT6 and ride your bike.
BigFish 04-28-2010, 02:22 PM Nobody I know knew in advance that they were going to close it Patrick! So what are ya gonna do after its already closed?? We were however told it was simply a matter of the road being impassable......so who you gonna blame for that?

Road being impassable because of what? Storm? Construction? Objecting neighbors?
BigFish 04-28-2010, 02:46 PM It has 2 giant potholes/mudholes...whatever you want to call it. Its a dirt road and vehicles getting stuck in the mud I guess might have caused it.
BasicPatrick 04-29-2010, 08:15 AM Larry
The explanation given by Swimmer is that the town's conservation commission closed it down. If this is true there was a hearing and it was anounced to the public.
I say we make a really loud stink. ConCom's frequently change their minds.
Also...if they get state money for that area there is a public access angle also. Bottom ling is we need to make a stink.
I set emails today
BigFish 04-29-2010, 09:04 AM Patrick
Swimmers version is correct.....it was a direct result of the holes in the dirt road and the folks trying to drive around them damaging the dune grass as we were told. As for it being announced to the public...well Swimmer and I are not Wareham residents and do not keep our finger on the pulse of every shoreside towns local goings on politically. Mike Thomas is a Wareham resident and received no advance notice to our knowledge.
Pt.JudeJoe 04-29-2010, 10:06 AM So have a bake sale and fix the road.
Swimmer 04-29-2010, 11:17 AM So have a bake sale and fix the road.
Mike T is trying to arrange an O.K. with the Con Comm for double washed stone to fill in the two pothole/small pond type areas. The other issue is probably doing something to keep people from driving onto and destroying more grass on either side even after the holes are filled in. Con Comm's usually try to replace the grass. Hopefully a little four foot fencing and some metal poles will suffice and the grass will regrow itself. Anyways Mike T. has contacted them and is going to contact the newly elected selectmen/women who he said seemed to have a more modern/current ideology. I did suggest to Mike so he doesn't foot the entire bill he set up a Paypal account so we can drop $5.00 or $10.00 into it to help defray the cost of the stone.
And I emailed the selectmen's office a few days ago about this. Wareham has a very up-to-date web site.
BasicPatrick 04-29-2010, 11:30 AM Frank...
Thanks for taking this away from Larry's complaining and towards discussing an avenue toward solutions.
I still think we will need to bring some grass roots political pressure so that the situation remains the issu and is not used as the avenue for permanent closure.
The problem with permitting will be the road repair. Symbolic fencing and planting dune grass are ealily allowed in that type of geomorphic area and are things we could organize, get permitted and raise money for or get materials donated easily.
If you and Mike need any help just pm me.
On a side note...because I love to disagree with Bigfish...under the new license this is why we have set aside 1/3 of the money for access. This is a classic example of how that money is supposed to be used.
BigFish 04-29-2010, 02:21 PM Patrick blow it out your kazoo! Talk about being out of the loop! I am not complaining just trying to inform you who seems to think he knows everything and everyone else just sits around on their caboose!
Not to mention your blanket accusations of people "not doing anything" when it was "publicly announced that the closure was to take place".........nobody on here knew about it until it was done.
stripermaineiac 04-29-2010, 06:42 PM Well I like fishing there so if it gets going I'll send 20 bucks down for the pot to pay for a couple truck loads of gravel to fill and fix the holes making it passable again. That will keep people out of the grass. Some of these things we can fix by just a little effort. You guys that are local just need to get it going. Ron

Agreed! The problem I have is that I nearly always learn about it after the fact. If we centralize and broadcast these access issues, then I think that would really help to keep our access. Twitter?
mikecc 04-29-2010, 08:43 PM I am going to try to meet with Dave Pichette. They say the town cant afford to repair the road. If acceptable I have to see if private funds can be used.
I have to see what type of fill is acceptable for the area & get a few estimates for the fill. Also to see if I supply the fill will the town spread it or if I have to get a private contractor.

Larry...Are you speaking Avatar again. Call your therapist there angry boy. I haven't said or accused or inferred any of the things you accuse me of. Do you just sit at home, huff sealer ad make this chit up as you go.
I completely disagree with your notion that because it is already closed it's lost forever. This isn't the first time the access down there has been cpmpromised. I can remember MikeCC and guys frommhis club organizing some pressure long before you were fishing that spot.
I am just trying to figure out and angle to get public as in DMF, DFG or even federal money to help with this and maybe even long term access protected. Sorry if my relationships that help fishermen on a regular bother you so much.
I'll send Mike a PM so you ca go back to your constant whining.
BigFish 04-29-2010, 09:31 PM I never said it was lost forever Patrick......are you huffing sealer?
All those things I said you said are right in your posts spin doctor.

Please both step back a bit and lighten up. Lets move back to the issue, not who misread who - thanks!

Now, do the flintlock pistols have a special S-B case with
a striped bass engraving on them?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
But seriously: i being a farmer /grower want to know more about this all so special grass the conservation commission is so worried about and learn how to grow it since it's that precious to protect. EVERYONE could/should have a small "transplantable" PATCH
growing in their back yard.

PATRICK: please LIST every email address you sent letters to
so that others may do the same.
for any problem you divide and concur (sp)
we are an S-B army
so someone needs to delegate commands to the commanders
in the field. The town's lack of resources do not apply to the
private citizens willing to organize and fill some friggan POT holes.
BasicPatrick 04-30-2010, 10:15 AM Raven,
Mike CC is clearly the general directing the charge on this one as he is the local resident and business owner AND has been in theis fight for this spot for more than the 15 or so years I ahve been fishing it.
I have Pm'd Mike off line.
I remain a firm beleiver that the fishgin community should get real loud and hamer MA DMF and the Town with complaints. A few thousand phone calls and emails usually get some attention and demands a solution be found.
That being said...I remain ready to provide any and all assistance.

I do not see where I have criticized anyone or placed myself above anyone. If anyone takes what I posted that way, please know that is not what was intended and please pm me, exhange phone numbers and let's talk.
I do understand the govenment process and asked the questions I needed so that I do not do anything that would interfere with the work of an ongoing club etc. It looks like Mike CC is the only one so I will now take this off line and deal with Mike directly so MSBA and MA RFA can get his back.
stripermaineiac 04-30-2010, 12:29 PM Hey Pat, Question. Does MSBA have a list of reps and town reps that people can use to contact when things like this come up? I remember when the MBBA was leadin the fight about oversand rights yrs ago they had a list that people could get ,LOL Befor computers LOL,so as to be able to contact people when things like this occured or to get out the word of meetings an so on. I even still have a couple from back in the 70's an 80's. Might be a good resourse to put out there where it can redily be found. Ron
Swimmer 05-02-2010, 06:25 PM I received a nice reply from Mr. Pichette over the weekend and what I surmised is basically what Mr. Pichette said to me. Not only will the holes have to be filled in, a barrier, probably large rocks, small boulders, will have to be in place prior to any fill, such as the proposed rock, is dumped in place. The boulders will attempt to kepp the double washed stone from wandering but will also keep us from driving to the left or right destroying anymore grass. Mr. Pichette didn't say any remedy was in the works, but his reply wasn't the typical, "this is how it is going to be government reply". His email cordial and warm. So there you have it, rocks on both sides of the potholes/small ponds and then the approved fill, what ever that may be. The con comm is concerned however about the number of boats that are being launched from there also. I have only seen the smallest of saltwater craft being put in,. but I am not there all the time.
Further unless I am asked I am not going to email anyone else. I don't want to sit on anything MikeCC has going with Mr. Pichette.
BigFish 05-02-2010, 06:43 PM Never seen many boats launched from there myself.....a few but not alot?
BasicPatrick 05-02-2010, 08:12 PM I completely agree with Swimmer that we all want to be careful and support what Mike CC is doing. I am not saying do not complain, I am saying lets make sure we aim our rath at the proper targets.
Ronnie...We use a lot of resources for legislators and State Departments. The best search resource for town by town MA state legislators that I use is:
Massachusetts Legislators :: By City and Town (http://www.mass.gov/legis/city_town.htm)
Off to the next roynd of meetings this week

Fishing should not be political.
This is the problem with fishing today...you have to attend fruitless meetings now that do more to aggravate you than anything else.
The whole concept of going fishing is to get you OUT of meetings and controversy like this and get you outside alone or with a friend to enjoying the environment :wall: I am tired of going to meetings, I find them boring and a waste of my time. If I have to attend meetings to go fishing...I am going to play more golf. (so far I have golfed 3X this year and gone fishing 0X)
