The news on the oil spill is disturbing to say the least - and the long term effects could be worse still

Brings back memories of when I was a kid back in the '50's and a tanker - the PW Thirtle - was rammed and dumped 31,000 gallons of crude into Narragansett Bay

I remember the effects well - thick tar all over the beaches and rocks, crude floating in Newport harbor making the beach at King's Park look somebody had paved it, plenty of dead oil-soaked critters

One of the lifeguards at King's Park actually set the floating crude on fire, thinking it would get rid of it - that didn't go so well, either. I can't believe BP actually thought that might be an effective mitigation technique for an offshore spill...:screwy:

The spill from the Thirtle effectively wiped out the oyster fishery in Narragansett Bay - those folks in the Gulf states are gonna get hammered, doesn't look like I'll be eating Appalachacolas anytime soon

At this point I hope the offshore spill in Louisiana doesn't get into the Stream and round the Keys - it's not a pretty scenario

What caused the oil rig explosion? Some of the non-conspiracy-theorists are stating Natural Gas / flammable gasses buildups occurred, found an ignition source, and went kaboom.

Quick Googling of conspiracy theorists are saying Al Queda, OPEC, ECCO-Terrorists, Halyburton, Obama, and go figure, Bu$hitler.

because "Natural" gas has NO Oder to it
until the gas people add it in....

so technically there could have been a huge
build up and no one was the wizer.:uhuh:

Here's more than a couple of likely suspects - they're all in Washington and easy to find

Quite a coincidence that right after Comrade Obama mentioned exploring offshore drilling ,one of the rigs goes down.Almost like someone wanted to make a reason for not drilling any more of them.Hmmmmmm.......:smokin: ..... nahhhh, it just blew up .
Tell ya one thing though ,this is gonna change clean up proceedure and fail safes on rigs from now on. ..Hope that doesn't cost too much more at the pump.

I saw an oil well fireman speak who said the biggest mistake they made was putting out the original fire. It would have never spread...

I'm amazed at the fact that we can put a man on the moon in 1960 something. But in 2010 we can't effectively contain a liquid that floats above water....
