'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'
Theodore Roosevelt 1907

He left out "color," he probably would have gotten shot earlier if he didn't. I don't know - I think it's possible to continue to embrace your heritage and be a fully assimilated American.
With the benefit of hindsight we know now that next generations of the people he was obliquely referring to went on to serve their country with distinction in the two world wars.

Used to be possible...

Now America (mostly all white Americans) are expected to embrace an immigrants heritage and fully assimilate to them.

See this news article for reference...
A kid discussing being sent home from school for wearing an American Flag on May 5:
"but today is sensitive to Mexican Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."

Or call a customer service number: "Para espanol, oprima dos."

Or the widespread outrage with AZ trying to protect our borders.

We (Americans) are expected to change and adjust our lifestyles in order to "fully accept" people that immigrate here, not the other way around.

It used to be that immigrants came here for a chance at a better way of life, to give their children sonething that they didn't have.
Now it seems like most come here for a hand out. They EXPECT to get everything for free, and pay nothing.
Talk to ANY immigrant that has become a naturalized citizen, an most are apalled by the fact that there are those that sneak into the country, steal benefits from those that rightfully deserve them, and cry "victim" when they are caght/confronted as illegal.

What's even more sad is that although it is our duty as a major world power in the civilized world to provide assistance to other countries in times of disaster, our leaders have seen fit to essentially "give away" our heritage and birthrights in the name of "political correctness". They have been selling our country right out from under us, and tell us that we are doing fine, that there's nothing to worry about.

Sorry, but when the PEOPLE vote on a law or amendment and the government, state of city powers ILLEGALLY override that vote in order to keep their control and their jobs, then there is definitely something rotten in Denmark.
