I've always wanted to try the teaser fly thing in front of the swimmer. I've caught bass to 32'' on these flies and have seen 35'' fish taken also.

My question is how far up from the swimmer does the fly have to be? Should I take off the hooks on the swimmer? Do you make a dropper loop or use a swivel in the main line for the fly?

I use a dropper loop about 18-24" up from the lure. Leave the hooks on your plug.

Next time we fish, remind me and I'll give you one of my rigs.

Some thing you can use at the canal?

teasers work great...........my problem is when the fish get big(40"-20lbs) and u get 1 on the lure and 1 on the teaser u usually only end up with only 1 (and no plug or no teaser). big fish and double rigs don't seem to work for me. am i missing somethin?? enlighten me please!

Don't think you're missing anything. I've accepted that as the gamble that comes with using teasers. If the fish are aggressive, I always pull the teaser off.

thanks. i'm glad i'm not missing a trick (or at least this trick). i've gone as heavy as 80 and 100lb on the teaser rigs. u lose castability and action and still get the hooks straightened

The problem is the dropper loop itself. The line is essentially cinching itself up onto itself. That is a recipe for breakage. The good thing is that if it is tied right the plug side will not come off since the knots on each side tighten to each other as the line os pulled taut. The bad thing is that you have to replace the leader anyway because it shouldn't be trusted.

The dropper is the easiest way I have found to attach a teaser. Pretty much tangle free. There is no fool proof way I don't think. They all have drawbacks.

On heavier leaders just cut one side of the dropper loop close to the knot. Then just tie a clinch knot to the teaser. The stiffer mono flags it out a bit from the main line tangle free.
It's essentially a blood knot anyway.

Some more details....

I fish braid with a leader of mono or flouro. The knot I use is a triple surgeons, could I use the tag end of the leader to tie on the fly or is that to close to the braid?

Try it
If you tied the dropper loop well you will cut your hands on the mono pulling on it first
