I want to get something to make my own chum. Last year I tried the wife's Kitchen Aid with the grinder attachment and I made a mess of the Kitchen Aid and it kept getting clogged.

If any of you guys have a low cost solution that will grind up mackerel and pogies, please share it. Thanks.

I made one several years ago out of old 7 1/4" saw blades that i built into a box and it sat on a bucket. Was powered by 2 drills. If you froze the fish and dropped it in it made perfect chum. I put washers between the blades and ran two spindles, 2 drills running in opposite directions. Scary frigging thing but it worked

I have seen the big food grinders online. I tried a smaller one on the Kitchen Aid and it kept clogging - it just could not press the head and fins through. Do you get a lot of clogs with the big grinder?

Has anybody tried a food processor or an industrial blender?

Takes me ten minutes to make 5 gals. of chum using herring.

You need 5 gal. bucket, drill with 1/2inch chuck and approx. a 3 ft. long steel paint stirrer approx. 20 bucks.

Drill 2 holes off center, one to the left and one to the right of center size of a penny in a 2x4 Do not drill to deep. Stick a penny in each hole so that you do not drill through the 2x4 Do not drill holes to close to the sides or you will cut the bucket.

Take the square paint stirrer cut up from bottom on the 2 thin sides approx. 1 1/2 inches from bottom, do not cut 1/2" center rod at this time. After that Cut center 1/2" rod close to bottom of bottom thin blade.

Now you should have the two thin sides and top blade and 1/2" steel rod. Sharpen both sides of all 3 thin pieces.

Should take no more then an hour to make. The center rod should be longer then the blades to fit in hole with the penny and you do not want the blades to hit the 2x4

Cut approx. 5-6" hole in center of bucket cover, fill bucket half way with water put gadget in place fill bucket through hole with herring and let the drill do the work. You may want to adjust the water depending on how thick or soupy you want the chum

i should have put her in the chipper. in the pre dogfish invasion days i used to chum/chunk alot. we'd make a day of it get a bunch of coolers of macks and make enough chum for everybody for the whole season. it was a fun spring tradition until the chipper and it's owner passed on. so... whose got a chipper

With mine it rarely clogs, I remember once or twice it clogged. Clean ups are very easy and it is not that messy.(Although this is NOT an indoor operation!) flush with hose while running, spray well with WD40 or motor oil for storage

Before I made this, I recall the conversation with my wife about using the Kitchen Aid with the grinder attachment...I could see that was not going to happen so I didn't push it. You have to pick your battles and that was one I was not going to win. So I made one like Van using parts picked up cheap from Ebay.

I place a bucket with a kitchen trash bag as a liner underneath the output of the grinder and feed in bait fish as fast as it will take it until the bucket is full of chum...I also add any extra "flavoring" during the process (extra bunker oil, oatmeal, sand, etc) . Once the bucket is full (10 min or so) I take the entire bucket and place it in the bait freezer (chest style). After a few days I take it out and flip it over and take off the bucket and then put the frozen chum (in the plastic bag) back in the freezer until use. When using it I simply take the plastic bag off and insert it in an Aquaskiz chum bag ( I found this to be a good heavy duty chum bag and it has lasted several years).

This is probably one of the cleanest ways to fish with bunker. The frozen bucket of chum in the bag puts out a steady stream of chum for more than a full tide of fishing. I then drift chunk baits back in the slick. Works like a charm and will piss off the chunkers as it will pull the fish from their boats as soon as their chunking is interrupted and they will not leave your non-stop slick. Oh...and if you decide to leave early and want to re-use the chum, no problem...put the entire chum bag in a garbage bag and place in the freezer (the chum is still frozen) and just take it with you next time. Also clean up is easy with chum bags...empty, rinse and split.

Get the cheap $100 #32 grinder with the 3/4" hole plate. You can hand crank it if you don't want to spend the time putting power to it. Make sure you go with the 3/4"plate, you'll be unclogging it constantly if you don't.

Thanks for all of the info. I think I will try Fly Rod's paint mixer first as that seems to be the cheapest way to go.

The wife wasn't too happy when she found I used the Kitchen Aid and it took me about an hour to clean it. Won't do that again.

I have a 5hp wood chipper I use to make chum.I can make 12 buckets of chum in 30 minutes. I will set it for $75.00.

I am not actively selling it but need the space.
