I am looking at a 2001 Ford Explorer Limited with AWD. Anyone have any opinions on it? I will be on the beach with it and can get a pretty good deal on it. Just wanted to know if anyone has any experince with them.

I have a 2000 Explorer....nice vehicle....I worked for Ford for 12 years so....what size motor is in it? if it's a 4.0 SOHC I might be inclined to have it checked out or, check out the carfax...4.0 OHV ( thats what I have ) or a 5.0.....buy it....they had some issues with the SOHC motor...but the vehicle is solid...have 162,000 on mine...had to get the head gaskets replaced about 30,000 miles ago, another "kinda common" problem with them but....I love mine.

Thanks guys but I may have been a little late on it. Someone else was interested but you never know.

The 1995-2001 AWD models have the 302 cid V-8 in them---good engine.

The "AWD" is really full-time 4wd. It's permanently engaged and doesn't rely on wheel slip to transfer power. It's split full-time 40% to the front wheels and 60% to the rear (uh, I think???)--they run fine on the beach.

Yea this one was a 5.4 . I spoke to three mechanics who said they don't like that motor. The spark plugs tend to blow out of the head. Incidentally, that is what just happened to my car for me to be looking for a new one.

Thanks for the replies guys. I appreciate it. The hunt is on. It is much better to go buy a car when you don't need one though.

My new ride. 2001 Blazer 1 1/2 inch lift in front 2 inch in back with 31 inch General Grabbers. Custom lights, fog lights, Flowmasters and lots of road noise. It beats the Jetta, I just killed, by a mile. Happy as a mofo and my wife actually likes it too which is a serious bonus as she is anti-truck.

They are great trucks. I had a 1/2 a dozen Blazers from 1994 to 2001. Went to the TrailBlazer in 2002. The only problem I had with the Blazers was the front end. I must have had 6 or 7 ball joints, upper and lower replaced on all the years mentioned. Other than that they are great on the beach. I ran the Back Beaches every weekend then and I never had a probelm.
