Good condition Vega Pro 48" duplicator with adjustable brackets for lathe. These are currently going for $800 new. I think there's an extra set of nylon bushings also. Includes Vega diamond V holder and carbide cutter bit which is an extra $130 new. $600 prefer pickup.

This duplicator is not the same as the typical midi duplicators etc you see this is a very beefy unit. 2 passes to turn a plug. 5 spoke wheel. I'm not using this anymore and the machine is being converted to cnc this fall.

Scott is a duplicator of this style strong enough to turn baseball bats of ash and maple?

Absolutely. This is not the weenie midi that they make for small lathes Billy it's a heavy duty unit. Would not have a problem turning bats. I've turned 4.5" basswood blocks for those mambo poppers. There is a video on youtube that shows it. Look for #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& artillery shells

Question is will your lathe keep up with it :)

If I hadn't already taken it off the machine I'd let you come up and try it but it's too late there's 2 days of work into the cnc project now.

I'm still thinking about it. I been toying with doing custom bats. I do have a market for wooden bats. My son plays in an semi-pro league and also coaches in town. He tells me I could get orders. I at the moment have a JET lathe which with the addition of an extentsion would do the lengths. I not sure if the lathe has the stamina to do these if it gets more than an occassional bat. I don't know where this might lead me but I guess if it did work out, a bigger lathe would be in the cards. I'll check out the video.

It will work with a smaller lathe but you would have to watch your depth of cut more Bill. If that's a Jet mini then I don't think you'd be happy with it. Best put on a larger machine.

Thanks for your input Scott. Yes it's a Jet mini. I will be looking into purchasing a larger lathe shortly if this venture comes to fruition. If by chance you still have the dupe available when this transpires, I will contact you.

Scott, through many searches for a lathe I realize the many models available. I have been looking at h/p ratings, reversing motors along with unit weight. I would like to expidite the turning time and see the Vega unit could cut up to 3/8" per side. Thats 3/4" per pass. Seems alot to remove at once. The dupe decription didn't mention hardness of woods. Do you have any suggestions for a full size lathe that won't break the bank?

Look at Grizzly lathes. Best bang for the buck. Or get a real nice one
Look at the Jet 5389 16X42 1 1/2 hp. (Amazon has them)

While the grizzly stuff is ok, it's cheap and there's alot of issues with the lathe I have currently. Though it's turned well over 250k lures now, the headstock has a bad bearing, the tail stock has always had too much play side to side necessitating a field modification, The tailstock lock is a piece of crap, and more.

You want my honest opinion? Either a 2hp Vega 1553 or a 2hp Oneway if they make a 2hp.

You want to turn those two machines are very well priced and heavy/quality which is going to give you a nice turning without a ton of runout/vibration at the same time having enough power for the duplicator to do it's job.

You want a variable speed on it so you can put a 4" hock of maple on the thing and rough it out to a cylinder then speed it up and hog your shape. You should be able to cut a standard bat in under 2 minutes on that, maybe faster.

Course you want to cut bats the machine you want is Eegore. I'll cut you a bat in less than 40 seconds with almost no sanding :devil2:

Scott, the bigger Jet is best suited for this vega? no words on powermatic, but in the mid-range i guess Jet?
how old is it?

I had a d16 on my jet mini for a long time. It will work but the lathe don't have enough balls to drive it. Plug turning minimum is the bigger jet and for something like what Billy wants to do with 3.5x3.5x37" billets he needs a bigger machine with variable speed.

2x2 birch at 3000 rpm on Eegore to do a turning in well under a minute. Want to buy it Bill? :hee:

Age is relative and doesn't matter on these when you take care of them. The only thing that ever wears of them is the teflon blocks. And you're getting a brand new set of replacement blocks with the duplicator. That unit is about 5 years old.

Eegore? Sure would be nice. But for now I need to take baby steps. Your Vega is a nice unit. I saw a demo on you tube on bats. The sucker was taking approx 3/8" per side cut w/ minimal effort on the wheel. The hard part I'm finding is locating a good lathe for cheap bucks. A Jet 42' is close but I would like a reversible motor and a quick changing speed lathe. I also looked into a 16" swing Grizzely. Reversible and variable.

3 phase use a converter off your single phase 220 input.

Thanks for the clarification. I know I don't have 3 phase. What do yuou think of the 16" grizzely?

hitachi variable freq drive.

If I was looking at a grizzly I'd probably save my money for something better if I could. Just too cheap Billy.

That is far from done. Will take another 4-6 months of work.

Scott, is the mounting of this large dupe universal? If it's not a specific fit for a certain lathe I will consider taking it off your hands. I have 2 choices 16" X 42" Grizzely 1 1/2 hp or a 16" X 42" Jet 1 1/2hp. Both reversible and variable speed.

No it's a pretty generic bracket Billy. Will fit either of those lathes. Out of both go with the jet.

Scott I would like to purchase the dupe. I will agree to your original asking price if you would ship it. Please let me know. If you would like to discuss anything on this, please give me a call.

UserRemoved1

Not a chance of shipping. It's too big and would have to go by truck to pack it properly. If you want it your going to have to pick it up.

I originally thought maybe could be shipped but the box would be bigger than what ups will take.

Few hours closer Billy. Thought you might like to see the progress.

Machine is now completely roughed out. This is the X axis cross slide for the finish axis. Have to fabricate the guards and tooling holders still.

Billy hows that dupe working for you

Almost a year of work on this thing. Still have alot to go like the feed and chuck setup but it's alive, I got all motors under power and holding position today :kewl: No smoke :hee:

Anyone got a Vega carbide cutter holder they want to get rid of? Just the holder. Long shot but might as well ask.

pbadad
05-15-2011, 03:03 PM
Scott the dupe is great. I've gotten the unit down pretty good. My cut time is in half when I started. I've added 2 Vega steady rests to eliminate any vibration and utilize one then engage the other to remove the piece left from the other one which is riding on the pre cut dowel size of approx. 2". I definetly been experimenting with the speeds for the best cut. I like 2000 rpm. Especially for the hard northern white ash. The canadian yellow birch leaves a better finish b/4 sanding. I might be adjusting the right hand dupe stantion closer to head stock to do smaller peices< 28" or buy another one to mount then keep the outboard one on then just remove in order not to have to readjust the dupoe centers. I can't be more happier. The Jet lathe reversable w/ infinite speeds is the ticket. now if I can find a good supplier of baseball billets which is closer than Pa. & Washington state would be great. Shipping costs are 1/3 the price of the stock. your automated unit looks "sick". Maybe a U tube video in operation should be next when you get it fired up!!
