I work in the seafood business.

3000 lbs on the Gloucester auction this morning
3000 lbs on the New Bedford auction this morning

One guy just called in Gloucester with 7000 lbs this morning.

The market price crashed the first day of commercial season.

That was quick. Usually takes a week or two.

Started at $3.25 this morning, now I'm hearing $2.50 market price.

Is there a point where it just becomes not worth it (like Maine shrimp and last year's low lobster prices)?

Andrew,
Starting this tread won't do anything but stir the pot for those here who are against killing/selling bass !

That sounds absolutely absurd! 6000 pounds is nothing, maybe like 12 guys selling a limit! I know for a fact that fishing in the new bedford market area is awful the worst ( dare I say ever ). How can RI hold at 4 bucks for weeks and MA tumble on 6000 pounds? doubt it

Ok I don't know what I'm talking about. Those are 3 people out of 50 with fish today.

I could have bought all day long at $2.50

I'm thinking that he forgot one more zero at the end of those figures.

I know of 3 guys who had 1000 pounds between them yesterday----from shore.

60,000 pounds sounds more accurate to me.

I wouldn't doubt there was over 60k lbs in Boston today.

Like I said those were 3 people out of 50 people selling bass today.

....less product goes to market; RI dealers are savvy-sell some to NY (based on PCB size limit),restaurants; also, pretty sure MA dealers talk to each other and set price.....BB, Vineyard, etc dead yesterday...worse I've seen in 35 years since i've been fishing that area.....maybe others were luckier....

In RI,there are a lot less guys(limited entry,actually,no entry)and there's a 3 fish limit,every fishing day.That's a lot less fish,so a higher price.

..wrong.....5 fish per boat per day, 5 days a week..no fishing Fri, Sat....till spring quota is filled (aprox....90,000 lbs) then short season in Sept....trap fishermen allowed approx 100,000 lbs

Really? It was 3 when I used to go with some comms.Surprising that they would raise it.Either way, comparing 5 to 30,and comparing the number of guys doing it,it's easy to see the price difference.

When the RI season was open we saw an amazing amount of RI boats fishing race point.

Haven't seen many since the RI season closed.

R/R

it could be .but its legal in RI / if you have a commercial finfish license in RI ........ it can be from boat or shore >>> R&R / nets / dragging .diving .
I went to a [open] meeting on Monday night ... about a bunch of proposals, requests, etc .. concerning or effecting RI waters .
One of the discussions was on wordage to make it [clearer] on what & when >. where & who .on commercial fishing ;;;it centered around the R &R & boats ..
Someone rasised the question of guys that fished from shore ;;; Duh // then asked a two part question on diving for shellfish & also fin fish ...........another Duh . they had not even thought about either ..... so those are two more issues that they will address & have in writing . so Enforcement won,t have to deal with more [gray] area,s .
Its legal & it will stay legal . we tried to control it some .........25 years ago in the shellfish industry ........ & lost because of the backing that they have from rec divers ............ shellfishing has paid the price dearly for that loss ;;:devil2:
