So I said to myself after the VMC three aught was driven into the fatty part of my left palm, because of the antics of this ten pound fish jumping around, mother%$%$%$%$er. The fish is jumping around and I am looking at the skin being pulled stretch or what have you until I kneeled on the fish in the rocks and kept it from moving. The hook that was in fishes mouth was extricated and I kicked the fish not so gingerly back into the ditch. Then I stared at the hooked, whose pointed was protruding out of the palm with the barb located exactly midway into the puncture. Next thought was, Jordan Hospital, Tobey Hospital or surgery under the lights by pole # ???. I wiggled it back and forth sitting on the grass next to the canal cruiser trying to decide which way was easier. Finally I decided to pushed the barb all the way through and use my crimps to crush the barb. It wasn't all that bad, pain wise, crushing the barb was difficult getting a good angle on the barb was the most difficult part. Good the hook was in my left hand because I am a righty. Anyway after crushing the barb I checked to make sure it was really flat against the inside of the shank and it backed right out. Squeezed and sucked on it for a few minutres, poured coffee on it to rinse it off, then applied Neosporin and fished for several more hours. On the way home I called my doctor's office and they had me come in for a tetanus shot and get a script for Keflex ???.

So after I complete my oral boards for the new surgery post I am applying for I lost on my first cast after the surgery my favorite bigfish prey because of a snarl on my Calcutta 400. That was worse than the hook in the hand.

This morning using the same Calcutta I lost on my first cast a stick shad Sebile after I spent an hour last night getting the line straightened out or so I thought on the Calcutta. Put that rod down. Fished for a few more hours with not much to show for it, switching lures often and finally picked up the other stick shad I had and line snapped on that cast. Bail closed prematurely because I don't think I opened it up fully. So now its two mornings and three lures gone plus I don't no how I am going to pay tuition at medial school.

To top it off the waders I have been using sprung an awful leak. So their gone and the boots I have been using were on their way out anyways. Its been a great fews days on my retirement. First time I ever fished the ditch three mornings in a row. Sometimes it costs a little more to enjoy than other times.

With that kind of luck, I'd be careful when you hit the john!:biglaugh::rotf2::biglaugh:

Could you have cut the shank and continue moving forward with the hook instead of doing it as you described.

Oh yeah what pole # was that ?

My crimps wouldn't cut the shank. Tried that. One thing I am going to purchase, and put in a little first aid kit is a pair of cutters that will cut the VMC hooks and others.

Mike I didn't start adding up the cost of everythig that crapped out in the last two days I choked. Just threw in the med school for chits and giggles.

I always wonder if the pain we feel from a hook in the hand is the same for a bass with a hook in it's mouth?

Problems always come in three's so, I'd say your on to better pastures:grins:

the fish gods are telling you to stay off the canal and find a sandy beach.you need to go get a job so u wont hurt yourself!!

I always find the hardest part is pushing the buried hook, the rest of the way in and back out through your skin. Amazing how tough the skin really is....**ouch**

5 or 6 years ago out on the reef at the Fire Beach in Weakapaug and I land a 15# or so. Go to unhook the fish, waist deep in water and drive a 3/0 right thru the last finger on my left hand with the bass still attached.

Hugged the bass to my chest and got the manleys out of my holster and cut the shank of the hook. Whew!!!!

Leader snapped, monday mornig I lost 2 Gibbs poppers...75.00 down so far this week. No surgery for me, but Ill look you up when I catch myself. How much is your co-pay? Will you accept the generic overpriced insurance I work so hard for? Do you recommend regular or decaf for wound sterilization?

Reminds me of the nite I met you at Carp's BAr and you or your buddy had to cut the hook out of our fearless leader JohnR's hand.........

I have a first aid kit in the truck which is always a mile away. I am going to put together a small kit for the bike which will include said Manley pliers. I was going to get a pair of whatever brand pliers, but Manleys it is i guess. Thanks.

I first fish the canal as a five year old 54 years ago with my uncles, whoclearly recall at the time thinking I was a pain in the ass. They were fishing with drop lines and I was trying to do the same with absolutely no luck at all.

I have fished a very long time and thats the first time I did that. I came very close one othe time where the point went in, but the barb didn't, and there was no fish involved then either.

My wife was very pleased that before she came home from work I had allready received a tetanus shot and a script for antibiotics. She thought that very adult of me.

Last time I injured myself on the way fishing and should have had a couple of stitches when I cut myself at the wrist paralell to the vein and I bandaged it myself and continued on to go fishing. She was pissed when she came home from work, which for her is a hospital. She ran down and got some stuff and fixed the cut up.

I've had some close calls and many minor sticks but nothing I had to push through more than just a skin tag. Worst for me was having the back of the hook point (opposite the barb) get pushed into my thumbnail like I was using it to cut the nail legthwise. It split the nail from tip to cuticle like a blade but never did stick in. I ow that to a surprisingly frisky medium to samll blue fish.

What I really worry about is taking one in the face (or eye) when trying to brak a jig off the bottom in the canal. When one snags in close , it can come rocketing back at you with no warning.

Anyway sorry for your misery . People say that kind of thing builds character. :)

...i dont think so...the mouths of these bass are so avascular so there can not be a lot of nerves and second, these fish are eating lobsters and crabs with spikes and claws and fish with sharp fins...i think they dont feel much 'pain'...

Got a hook in my thumb and the emergency room didn't even have a cutter that would go through a VMC. Had to call a friend to bring a set of cutters!

That is funny. The last time I went to the emergency room to have a hook taken out, the doctor pulled out these 24" bolt cutters. After he numbed me up and pushed it through I had to hold it in place so he could cut it. It was a little overkill I think.

The first hook in my finger had to be cut out of me. It was hitting bone when they tried to push it through. Three stitches in your fingertip really sucks.

Manleys definitely. They cut a 3/0 treble that went in, and I pushed out, of my finger. It hurt very little due to the adrenaline rush at the time. It hurt afterward, when I got home and put antibiotic cream on it. I got a tetnus shot the next day.
