Gloucester harbor was loaded with mackerel. :) There were so many that even I had no problem catching them. In 20 minutes me and another person had 50 macs in the barrell and all the other person was saying over and over, "don't we have enough?" and I says, "keep hauling them in." The other two boats close by had not much luck. I guess it is how you snap the wrist to make the action.

Loaded up on Sat just off the SF park. There are some large blues that have settled in just outside ther harbor, which I think is contributing to the macs being inside.

Had a number of run-offs on Sat. But the macs would be dropped before I could engage the drag (bait runners). I am going to try hooking through the nose vs just forward of the dorsal fin to see if it makes a difference.

Last Sunday (pre-sunrise) we couldn't find any heading out of Plymouth, settled for harbor pollack which were plentiful.

Salem Harbor is loaded with pogies too. I haven't seen them that thick up there ever like this.

I haven't been out in Boston Harbor since Sunday. Anyone seeing macs out there this week? On Sunday it was pretty easy to load up on them.

NOT TRUE!!!! Haven't seen any. Have not even set the net once. Talked to Jimmy who has only managed a dozen in a whole night of netting.... and that was the high point of the season! They are not here. And it's going to be tough when the macks are gone.

We got some today, but it was tougher than usual.
But we did get there a bit late due to an error (BY ME) !!!!

Boated some beautiful stripers too.
Well over market size....

Loaded up real easy on macs today: mid day just outside the Bos Harbor. After 10 min live lining had a 36" striper, next pass doubled up on 30+" blues, boated only one.

I have always had success hooking through the nose on most fish, but especially macs. There is a hard bone in the front that keeps the hook from pulling out.

There were plenty of macs in Gloucester Harbor this evening. Loaded up with about 50 of them in a half hour.

Went out Thursday morning around 10 AM looking for macs in outer harbor, none. As I was heading to my dock in the inner harbor started to chat to a person as I was going by him and "BINGO" he hooks a bunch of macs and I through my rig over and started loading the boat. Macs were hanging around the inner harbor channel bouy.

You N.Shore guys don't know how lucky you are. S.Shore had them pretty steady till mid June, and spotty till july and that was a gift. Now .... nada.

Macs very scarce today. Lost a jig set to blues yesterday, that is a bad sign, blues forcing macs out of harbor.

Inner harbor of Gloucester once agin loaded up today. Seems they are on an every-other day schedule. Every possible size from spikes up to some hefty 2-pound horse macs today. Everyone filling up buckets and bait-wells.

Big-ass bruiser blues up to 15 lbs all around the perimiter of Cape Ann.

Those big bruiser blues were busting outside of Marblehead to Cat Island for hours this morning. Had to be almost forty boats on them. Fun, but certainly signals the end of the mackerel locally. All the normal haunts were void today , and yesterday for the most part. If you get on them, you better load up on them and fill the freezer. Best to have a lot of ice to mix with salt water to keep them in the best shape.

I even was out as far as 5 miles beyond Halfway Rock looking for them today. Nada. But did see and mark a good number of tuna in close.

Macs were in the inner harbor this morning. The key to be successful seems you need to be there at daybreak. Blues took most of my baits this morning, only managed to get one striper.

i almost looked for ya on the radio today.

got about a dozen tinker macs from the cut to the breakwater then lost 3 around kettle island where we switched to tube and worm and got 4 or 5 shorts and a monster blue fish we couldn't land on a 15lb test rod. was wrapped around all sorts of seaweed. Still no keepers but at least the crew was happy.

I think that I came up beside you this morning over by the bridge. There were three or four of you in the boat. I had already had about twenty macs and was looking for a few more.

Otherwise drag a tube!
