My son (9) was digging razor clams (also known as jacknife clams) today on the Cape. He would dig one and put it back and found it to be great fun. While I grew up here and have dug steamers, quahogs, and surf clams, I never dug razors... at least successfully.

Seeing all of these, I was wondering if anyone eats them? I googled them and find that west coast razors are delicacies, but no mention anywhere of east coast jacknife clams.

Just wondering, anyone eat these clams? They are everywhere...

when my kids were little ... when I came home with steamers / they would always [argue] about who was getting them .. if only one .then who had one last ><><

last year I saw 1/2 a bucket of them in a skin divers truck ..... he had sortd them out from the steamers he had gotten & was selling them seperate .that,s the 1st time I ever saw enough to sell ><><><

I used to eat them raw on a dare when I was a kid living the summers in Eastham.

I never collected enough of them to make it worthwhile to cook them. I usualy only get one or two when I dig steamers.

What's the trick to digging them? Little buggers are fast and I suspect that they don't go straight dow but angle off .

We used to scope out the football shaped divot in the sand and shoot your index and middle finger into the sand and voila. You two fingers should hit the side of the clam as irt goes down. Just dig on the opposite side of the finger insertion.

My son digs a deep hole next to the clam hole, then goes for it from the side. Gets one every time in about 30-60 seconds. If we were keeping them, he would have had dozens in about 15 minutes.

purge them like u would with steamers. commercial diggers get around 2+ per pound for these babies.clammer if u ever need an order for razors let me know. i'll start the compressor and i'll be down while u pick for me:)dude u missed a great 4th party.... 200+ at the house. make sure u leave the fourth open next year. i'm going to make this one better than 2010. oh trick is to dig a huge hole in the area of the razors and work the sides with your plunger, yes plunger. stone forks brake them too easy.

Clam gun is definately the way to do it and not all that hard to make yourself. I have done it out the west coast and it can be allot of fun. Those suckers are really fast. Kind of fun walking around when the waves go out looking for the little show holes they leave.
