View Full Version : And I used to think a boat ramp was the best show in town.
MAKAI 07-23-2010, 07:20 PM I wish I had a bucket of popcorn and a thermos full of capt and coke to sit and watch the googanfest I watched at the east end today. Man . . . how do they do it. . . . Rulers ?? . . . . We don't need no stinkin rulers.
SurfCaster413 07-23-2010, 07:22 PM Its always good for a good chuckle
ProfessorM 07-23-2010, 07:34 PM that is an organized ramp compared to Barnstable. At least you got some fisherman using that ramp. I have to compete with beach goers who use their boat twice a year and completely forget everything they ever knew about backing a trailer up. I have had to do it for a few of them over the years or I would still be waiting to pull my boat.
Clammer 07-23-2010, 08:43 PM THAT,S WHAT [SLIPS] ARE FOR ><><><><<<:jump1:
MAKAI 07-24-2010, 06:08 AM I wasn't quite clear.
I meant to refer to the urban angler cluster F I witnessed at the jetty.
A few 20 in fish stuffed into styrofoam coolers. The shoulder to shoulder brotherhood of one hand casting piscatorial nimrods. Plugs flying like angry hornets.
I watched some shirtless Barney Rubble let his 5 yr old son get a plug festooned fish out of the rocks by grabbing it around the head. I'm thinking " here is how the stupid learn the stove is hot "
Priceless .
I could go on and on, but that place needs bleachers and a hot dog stand.:biglaugh:
Clammer 07-24-2010, 07:44 AM OH THAT SHOW ;; those are worth enough to charge admission :uhuh::uhuh:
check out weekapaug breechway when the bloos are in town around 1 pm on a saturday or sunday :rotfl:

I'd bet if you charged $50 to remove hooks from people you could make an easy grand:smash:

Dick Durand 07-24-2010, 08:53 PM The Galilee, RI ramp is a sideshow as well. On a high tide the ramp nearer the dock doesn't drop off until the towing vehicles is well into the water. Chasis and exhaust systems are immersed into the salt.

sounds like you and I are dealing with summer the same way Bob..
I'm a friggin hermit this year.. get to work early, (no traffic before 7 AM)... struggle home by 4, and stay there...
kinda miss my old schedule of having a weekday off.. weekends off suck, at least in summer on the cape... too much freaking traffic & people, be it roads, on the water, boat ramps, or whatever...
nice and quiet up here in the woods tho .....
Fall's a comin'......:soon:
ProfessorM 07-25-2010, 06:38 PM I hear you Karl the traffic this year has been horrible as I have to go to and from the cape daily. Really have to plan and still have been caught in a bind several times. If I had only weekends to boat I would probably be a miserable soul. Being able to get out on weekdays is an wonderful benefit I am extremely grateful to to able to participate in. I hope you are liking your new job though.
Hey Bob with the construction and the shutting down of half the harbor this year it has made it pretty hard to have an easy in and out. You also need to be there before sun up if you want a spot. I just hope they are done by years end, but i wouldn't bet on it.
20" fish !!!!!!!!! Now that would have worth a phone call !!!!

I wrote a column about the freak show at the WB years ago - I think I described it as being like Dodge City on the Saturday night before Wyatt Earp rode into town. If anything, it's gotten worse down there. Natives should be allowed to carry flamethrowers and bazookas during the tourist season. :rocketem:

The times I have dropped a dime in the past all I get is " we really don't have someone available at the moment "
Damn crimigrants . :wall:

I know what you mean. Last year I thought I was going to have to break up a fist fight with my two young sons watching. I have not been back since - like boating out of Barnstable but that was the last straw. I like to put in early but when coming out, all the traffic at the ramp and even worse, the parking lot is just not worth it.
Goose 05-20-2013, 08:45 AM I plan on using the Barnstable ramp this year for about a week, is it really that bad. How is the channel/water ways once under way? Any red flags?
FishermanTim 05-20-2013, 10:27 AM That's why I only fish at night.
Only 2 types of people there at night: anglers and addicts.
You can tell the two apart by the fact that the anglers aren't twitching as much and they are holding a fishing rod and a fish. :biglaugh:
Maybe we can petition the powers that be to put in a seating section on the jetty for "viewing" the entire scene?

Goose, putting in early like most of us do is usually fine at first light, it's trying to leave when all the beachgoers are arriving, motors don't start , taking way too long blah blah blah
Saturday Jim and I got back to the harbor about the same time(he's lucky he has a slip), only a few ahead of me and more in line to launch but the whale watch was leaving an hour before low tide and almost swamped me at the dock, another guy on the ship yelled at Jim and he was only getting out of the way like another deckhand asked him. the whale watch actually spun around once he got past the ramp, had like 20 ft to spare total. I screwed out of there over to the town ramp and tied up, walked over to get my truck and hauled out of that ramp, not the first time I've done that. it can be a zoo midday that's why Paul uses the clammer's ramp most of the time.

Bingo!!! I came in yesterday morning about 8:00 AM (late for me). This guy in my marina asked where I was headed. I said "To bed".
You want to see a circus go up to the Hurricane Barrier in the Prov River. 100 boats on one, yeah, one school of pogies. Lines getting crossed, boats hitting other boats, lines wrapped around props. Meanwhile, 1/4 mile away there's more pogies than you can count and NO boats. I had 3 double headers (I fish a dropper treble above the weighted snagging hook.) in 5 minutes last week. DONE!!! Gone fishin'. Now I am strictly under cover of darkness. 99% of the googans are afraid to run their boats in the dark.
Friggin' morons
JohnnySaxatilis 05-20-2013, 04:23 PM Try West Dennis Beach in a couple weeks. You will be physically ill. A.K.A. The Googanheim Museum.
Goose 05-20-2013, 04:59 PM I'm planning to use that ramp for a week this summer, I'll be staying walking distance from the ramp. I'm wondering if I could get a slip for a week (doubt-it) Padnarum can be a mad house on week-ends too so I know how nutty it can be.
MAKAI 05-20-2013, 05:50 PM Gotta love the early evening. Watching the fat,pig eyed, sunburnt drunks. Trying to load their cheap ass lake boats on the trailer for the ride back to the section 8 motel.

I hadn't been in and out of Barn harbor for some years. Mid April I ran a couple of scouting trips out of that ramp,,,, couldn't believe how shallow out by the last can before the bell.
The NE wind that day with an outgoing tide was a ride and a half til the bell.
Have a great week when you're here, HTH Gup
ProfessorM 05-20-2013, 08:05 PM gup is right on a NW or NE wind with a outgoing tide it can get pretty hairy as the water is only about 7 feet out at the end of the main channel, but I usually can those days anyway as it isn't fun with that wind direction anyway. The ramp is fine, although a moon low can be a little dicey but doable especially putting in. Pulling out the ramp can be pretty greasy so 4 wheel is kind of a must at the lower end of the tides. The channel is well marked and it is important to stay in line with the cans in and out as it gets shallow outside the channels, I do it all the time in the dark without a problem. Make sure you are there no later than 8 on weekends or you may not get a spot. Weekdays should be fine and my preferred time. Trying to get out of there late in the afternoon, after 3, can and will be a real zoo on weekends, and add a lower tide stage and you will be kicking yourself for not leaving earlier or staying later. In a nut shell it should be no problem, have fun and maybe I will bump into you out there.
