Looking for input. A friend of mine took the time to index past articles from The Fisherman Magazine (New England Edition). Time period of index is 1974 to 1995, 53 pages long. Sample attached.

I have most of the back issues which are listed. Do you think there would be any interest from anglers seeking past articles?

I think there would be great interest. When you can't go fishing, the next best thing is to read about fishing.

I always thought they should be archived online with access for current subscribers. For as big as the magazine is, they still don't even have a website!?!?!?!?!? :confused::confused:

I had an index running for a long time of all past issues like what you have but got behind on it and didn't feel like keeping all the old issues in storage any longer. Ended up going through all of them and making photcopies of what I liked and put them into a binder. Of course, now I have these binders to store.

Problem was I would throw away issues that didn't interest me at the time - then, sometime in the future I would get into something new and wish I had the back issues I threw away. Now I have a good collection of older issues that I use as research material. I was thinking about providing a service for prints of past articles. Just trying to gauge if there was any interest. LOTS of good stuff in them.

Dennis, there really is a lot of good stuff in them. I have an article or 2 by you. #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& back years ago. Mike L. (BackBeach) 3 part article on how and where to fish in the Canal. The article is 18 years old and the same places still produce.

That would be great, I alway just toss them because of storage issues

I scanned a bunch of articles and have them on my hard drive, then dumped the mags.

I am with ya, my wife hates it and when we moved a few years ago and I had a bunch of boxes marked HEAVY - Fishing Info - she was like where did you keep all those and better yet where are you going to put them?

Every time I try "cleaning" I end up opening an old magazine and find myself reading the whole thing - and then possibly another. Bad habit.

Bottom line - Any online or electronic method would be well worth it.

I would let you borrow a binder at a time and make copies. PM me and see if we can work something out. I live way up in the NW corner of RI on the MA/CT border.

I would be interested DZ. I'm in the middle of importing the OTW pdf article list to Excel for easier categorization. Hope that I will have electronic access to articles in some way shape or form in the future. Looks like there are a lot of previously forgottem burns :devil2: I'll make it available when I'm done if someone hasn't done this already.

I have a bad habit of tossing articles that have no current relevance, like an article about cutty, then next season I go to cutty and wish I had the article that a year ago I thought was useless... oh well... I usually clip the articles I like and put them in a binder, creating an ultimate issue filled with stuff I like and need

The way The Fisherman buys the rights to articles, (North American Serial Rights) means that they have the right to publish them (as they were bought, for a printed magazine) one time. Then after that, the publishing rights revert back to the writer. You would need a release from each of the the writers to circulate them for free. You would need a release and pay a royalty if you were selling them, or offering them on a commercial site. When a magazine does an anthology (book of past articles) they pay the writers again for that.

**After 75 years from the publishing date, the articles come into the public domain, so if you are OK with waiting, no problem.
A few years ago freelancers and the NYT got into a legal battle over the NYT using past articles for web content without paying any additional money to the writers/photographers, the NYT lost. I think it was a Supreme Court decision.

I've been trying to find some of the lure building sections from the fisherman magazine. I have a few from the past couple years but I've been looking for older articles, Especially the jack french darter article. Definitely interested
