I remember seeing a product that is applied to the back of the guide feet to help keep it from digging into the blank when you dont use under wraps. Its like a liquid finish.
Anyone know the name of it?
Thanks

I haven't heard of such a product - although I am new to building.

I just used an underwrap.

Good luck,
Rob

Its almost like a glue, it helps the guide stick to the blank when aligning and protects it from guides digging in when wrapped.

Or maybe I should patent the idea....

kris, unless you are making a fly rod or fw ultra-light rod, i would suggest using an underlay.

Should I do a full length underlay or stop and start under each foot?

do a full length. again, a lot depends on what rod you are actually making. if it's a lite surf, you can use single foot guide. you'll notice more stiffening of a rod w/ double-footed guides than w/ single foots. as for underlays stiffening a rod, yeah, a little, but i'd be surprised if you noticed a difference if you put 2 rods next to each other - one underlaid and one not.

The stuff you were asking about I think was sold by Clemens now outobussiness. Sold as a temporay guide holder while you wrap the guide instead of a piece of tape. Never tried it. Sounded like a hot melt glue stick. I can only imagine the mess it made

Sometimes an underwrap can "loosen " the action of a rod. Sometimes the opposite. Generally I have found no discernable difference using under wraps. Generally they are for astetics and to protect the blank from the guide foot. Do what you want, its your rod and make it as custom as you can stand.
Because its a 1088 I would underwrap. That rod is a work horse.

This is a good thread for me, as I'm in the middle of buidling an American Tacke M701 (heavy action 7' casting). I glued the tiptop on last night, and was going to start wrapping the guides tonight.

I had initially planned on underwrapping, but after reading Clemens some, had changed my mind and was going to just wrap the guide feet, as its a pretty stiff blank to begin wiht. Now I'm not sure

Would you guys underwrap this rod or single wrap?

Underwrap everything. usually size A but I even think you should underwrap fly rods with 00.

almost forgot , i have seen the guide foot cement you mentioned. never used it but i have seen it. Don't like the idea.

Thanks to all,a great bunch of replies. Ill be under wrapping. I did a GLB967 w/o underwraps and the crackling noise is disconcerting, to say the least.
