let me get this straight.. YOY indexes are all a lot lower than past years, and because recreational take is 13% higher, they are proposing to increase commercial take to equal out the rec take? That is absurd!!!

why not lower the recreational limit? :confused:

I agree. We should be cutting the recreational catch to just one fish. I prefer a slot 26 - 32 so we don't take the really big ones that are key for reproducing. I release the majority of my keepers so it wouldn't impact me anyway.

BTW the last hearing that was held in Warwick was only attended by one S-B member beside myself and that captain BasicPatrick. Even if you have nothing to say you can applaud for those that share your ideas.

I agree we should ! I'd like to get a little more involved myself.That means at least go and clap.

You know whats getting sickening. They keep saying that the rec catch is growing due to all the people that registered for the registry not due to the fish that are being caught which is fewer than it has been in the past.
all they need to do is walk around and ask the shore bound anglers how the fishing has been and they'll hear a different story. Not the same as the boat fisherman say.They are a lot more fishing from shore than from boat.
Same damn thing as in the 70's an 80's. as long as there's a price or bounty on the stripers the greedy won't stop till they're gone.No matter what we do they down play it and lie about the real pic. Ron

Article by Basic Patrick in this months RISAA rag says that the powers that be are saying there are too many stripers and that's why we are not catching a lot.:fury:

Personally I dragged lead core line with a bubblegum colored tube and clam worm from Black Point to Bonnet Point yesterday morning on a dropping tide and had one short hit in 2 hours.:smash:

2 years ago I would have had 10 decent fish. Water was 68 degrees, marking plenty of bait so what's the deal????:wall:

BTW, talk about a lot of people fishing: From Bass Rock all the way to First Rock (including Hazard and Newton Ave) there were at least 50 guys fishing. I did not see one guy hook up but it was daylight so...not suprising.

The comm take is way off this year. ALL anecdotal data shows a pending doom. Yet fishery experts with their "best science" and "maximum yield" approach is not and has not been working.

Experts should do what is right for the fishery, the HELL with public comment, the HELL with any specific user group, do what is right and let the chips fall where they may!

If there fish is in trouble, there should be NO commercial exploitation, period.

Rec take should be minimized with C&R fishery considered.

Gamefish protection for this species.

Fix the bait problem for Christ's sake. End mid water trawlering and protect all forage species.

The reason we have a lobster shortage in so. NE is because we have a major bait problem and the bass have to resort to eating lobsters and crabs, its not water temp, its lack of big bait.

Is there an official stance for S-B? Could a single, well written comment letter be produced and "signed" by members and sent in as a group comment and get a little more weight than a bunch of single letters? Or a smaller, summary letter officially from S-B with letters from individuals affiliated with S-B attached? The letter or letters could either be emailed or if S-B members attend the meetings, hand delivered.

Just thinking from my experience with MEPA filings. You see a lot of conservation groups making the comments as one stronger voice. You are also more likely to get a whole bunch of names signing than those people attending a meeting or writing letters themselves. I personally don't understand the issues enough to take a stance either way, but if S-B has a stance, I'd tend to agree with them as they have my best interests in mind on this issue.

Hard pert for S-B is that there are peopel on this site that don't agree with that stand and will keep pounding the fish till they;re gone then move onto another soecie and do the same.Funny thing is to see one of them cashing his unemployment check and welfare and disability check then hopping into a $100'000 dollar boat and heading out commercial fishing when it started and selling the fish through his wife and kids. call me negative Nancy ,, but sorry guys .. The species has to collapse before the powers to be will get serious ,.,Even then they won't admit poor management but blame pollution or something eles beyond thier control . Bio mass BS ,, politics .. It's money swimming around. You say the fishing has dropped off and they say No ,, you just suck at fishing . I fished through one collapse,, probably will again . My suggestion will not affect me in any way, I always release the big fish, and only take one fish when I want a few dinners and fish sandwiches.

I used to think the slot was a good idea but I've been convinced somewhat otherwise (have not had my coffee so what I was convinced of I can't recall).
