NARRAGANSETT, R.I. --

Officials in Narragansett say they are searching for a 25-year-old male in the water about two miles south of the town beach near the Hazard Rock.

Four Lowell, Mass residents were fishing in the area when three of them were swept into the water around 2 p.m. according to the Coast Guard. The fourth male jumped into the water to assist. Three of the individuals were rescued but the fourth remains missing.

Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England dispatched a boat crew from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill and a helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod after receiving a 911 report of four people who fell into the water in the vicinity of Hazard Rock near Narragansett Pier.

The Narragansett Fire Department pulled three of the people out of the water but crews were unable to locate the fourth victim. The man is reportedly wearing long pants, a blue shirt and has long black hair.

How bad is the surf down there tonight?

I got completely covered by a wave and was underwater for 4 seconds last night... lost my hat and my headlamp...(held onto my rod tight!) surf was huge. I was standing in chest deep water about to get onto my rock when overhead whitewater covered me. luckily I was in my wetsuit, but I also would try to get to where I was going without it. Hey clammer, your buddy dennis gave me his headlamp after watching me get submerged, as I didnt have my backup... Stand up guy. Thanks dennis!!!
Surf is huge... be careful... if I was in waders, I'd be in big trouble. Crazy hearing about someone losing their life not too far away

This happens too frequently. I hope nobody in their infinite wisdom to protect the public decides to try and stop access to the area because of its danger level at certain times. I think a bit of additional signage wouldn't hurt in the area. I don't know what it would say. Maybe mentioning the history of the place as not being just dangerous but deadly.

I have been watching the surf all day from 1/2 mile from hazard. didnt look too bad. its the ppl that are ignorant that this happens to. n e 1 that goes to the water should always watch what is going on b4 they get n e where near the ocean, I dont care if it is placid or raging. and I do get the rouge wave theory too. unfortunately there are alot of ppl that think "lets go fishin" then go and walk to the edge of the water and make a cast and stand there:smash:. I also just 5 minutes came back from the pier and saw the commotion. cops, fire trucks, rescues, a C.G. zodiak tied to the monehans dock, 2 C.G. boats flying around the area, one helo and a C.G. jet doing circles from black point to the mouth of the river. I take this seriously so I hope I am not coming off in a bad light, but c'mon. F'd up part is I saw a post earlier 2day about someone wanting to go there bcause of the surf... when I went into the pier and saw the commotion they were the 1st one(s) I thought about so I hope you are alright. I have heard nothing but rescue sirens all day. PLEASE stay safe ppl

I don't get it. Fishing isn't that good at Hazard or Newton Aves to be risking your life. Hell, you can go and fish the short wall at Georges and get better fish and be safe.

Its a tremendously unsafe spot when the conditions get nasty. Unfortunately too many people disregard the risk, or are simply unaware of it, and fish that location in conditions that should be off limits.

I think we need more open access but there are a few places that could be closed during nasty weather - that's certainly one.

Very sad news....you'd think the name of the road would lend people to think before going there.

name is deceiving. Hazzard is one of the older local families. me thinks coincidence that it is ubber dangerous!

Technically, most deaths occur on Indian rock. It's very deep in front of it and waves come roaring in. Also, the rocks are smooth and slimy... Hard to stop yourself from sliding in and crawling out.

That was my impression too. Just awful.

The big flat rock slabs there make people without a clue think its a nice easy safe spot. On a calm day there are people sunbathing , kids running around , etc. The big flat slabs are almost like bait getting people out there and too close to the edge. Then a wave just a couple of feet bigger sweeps someone off. They naturally swim scared as hell back towards the rock and get slammed and dragged down by the next wave.

If you were going to set a trap for the typical weekender , you couldn't design it any better than that spot. Its too bad it gets a few every year almost.

They found the poor bastard:

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. -- The body of a man who has been missing since Sunday has been recovered, the Narragansett Police Department reported.

At 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, the Rhode Island State Police dive team and the Narragansett Police Department found the body of Samans Nou, 25, of Lowell, Mass. He has been missing since 2 p.m. Sunday when he was swept into the ocean by waves off Narragansett.

"This was off Hazard Avenue in the same general area where he was last seen," said Capt. Gerald Driscoll of the Narragansett Police.

Nou's body was discovered underwater, Driscoll said, and was located by State Police divers using robotic cameras and sonar devices.

Nou's body was taken to the Coast Guard station at Point Judith, Driscoll said, and a Massachusetts driver's license was found on him confirming his identity. Nou's family was notified and the R.I. Medical Examiner's office took possession of his body.

On Sunday, Nou was among four people fishing about 2 miles south of Town Beach near Hazard Rock when all four of them were swept by waves into the ocean. Three of the people , who the Coast Guard would not identify, were rescued. Nou had been missing for almost 47 hours.

My heart goes out to his parents and family... the sad thing is, this scenario plays out every fall somewhere along the coast...

Just terrible news, could only imagine how the family is doing

Sadly i was fishing at BLK point when this happened. they where diving off the cliff and got screamed at by the ocean police.:smash:
