View Full Version : our vinyard trip
we went over for a few days this week w/ the boys. dominic did pretty well fishing. there was a little estuary off the lagoon where we stayed. he woke me up each morning at daybreak - i could hear him whispering in the other room - "daddy - are you awake, we need to go get the crabs." had a great time
spent some time on the wharf too. biggest butterfish i've ever seen. got some scup and a rudderfish too
last one - domino and dad
Swimmer 09-03-2010, 08:29 AM Thats cool. Becoming a wharf rat, one who has fished and caught fish from the Edgartown wharf, is very important on the island. Some of the Vineyards moist famous resident fishermen, get their Joneses on that wharf when all else fails.
numbskull 09-03-2010, 08:37 AM Consider getting an 8-10 ft seine net and attach it to a bamboo pole on each end (or you can tie loops to put around a wrist and an ankle). Take your kid to an estuary/beach and work it along together in 1.5-3 feet of water. Walk about 15 yards then sweep up onto the beach. Way cool fun.
Piscator 09-03-2010, 08:44 AM good stuff Niko, glad you guys had fun!
I love the GI Joe guy in the net with the crab......
numby - when we were there i was thinking next time bring a seine. we put out a minnow trap a few times and caught hundreds of litle fish. they were greenish with little bars on them - killies? looked like good fluke bait to me
angler229 09-03-2010, 08:54 AM Looks like a great trip to me.
BigFish 09-03-2010, 09:30 AM That boy is growing fast Paul! Looks like you had a blast! Great pics!

Killies(mummichogs) for sure. Good for small fluke, but die quick in a bucket.
The best place to seine is along a sheltered beach with a small shelf. You'll get spearing, killies, tiny fluke, searobbins, puffers, pipe fish, eels, and various other juvenile finfish, even snappers. It is like opening a Xmas present for the kid each time you pull it on the beach.
Magical.
Mr. Sandman 09-03-2010, 10:08 AM FYI The state is planing to build an exclusive fishing pier off OB near the Steamship pier. (hopefully for your visit next year!) It will be 300+' long and have an L on then end of it. It will be in 12' of water. (if you want to hear my rant about it it is in the "derby talk" section of the MV derby website.)
The state is using the fishing tackle tax $ to improve access.
There are some locals fighting it but I think we can beat them into submission. It will be GREAT for doing exactly what you did with your kid... Also it will have handicap access and have a bathroom. it will be open 24/7/365
I am glad you had a good time.
JoeBass 09-03-2010, 10:15 AM That reminds me so much of the great times I had with my son at that age. He's 17 now and we are fishing tomorrow.
FISHING_FOOL 09-03-2010, 01:41 PM Looks like you guys had a good time! Are there a lot of crabs down there?
freebie 09-03-2010, 03:30 PM he's getting big Paul. hopefully next year he can get in on some harbor trips.

I was sitting at the Oak Bluffs ferry pier when an employee of the ferry went and complained in the police station about tresspassers on the closed dock. The officer at the employees insistance arrested the two fellows and that was the end of squeezing through the locked gate. I an an old friend of m ine were just about to do the same thing, and I would have been locked up also. Thats very nice some of tackle tackle tax money is going towards a fishing pier in what was a very productive place for albies and whatnot.
