13 3/4 lb bluefish weighed in on day 1, not bad. I think we may see some big blues this year. Not saying we'll see a 20, but I'll bet an 18 will be weighed in this year.

A junior also pulled in a 9 1/2 pounder from the shore on the firstr day. Nice fish!

the wind was a BALL buster while i was down there. A couple days i was sure if you just caught something you'd get a daily. Not 1 boat to be seen a couple days out of the week. Albie count is low. Blues are up. one of those years I guess.

Was out there from Sept 20-25. Fished three partial nights - my partner and I had a very slow pick of bass to 16 lbs. One bluefish for my partner that hit a rigged eel. Plagued by big and discolored water. Didn't see any albies or bonito taken from shore by anyone. Locations normally loaded with funny fishermen were empty.

Did take many nature walks with the wives and uncovered a location that had me drooling and I will need to find a way into next time. I'm still learning this BIG place - a whole new puzzle for me. Love that aspect.

Had the pleasure of fishing with Sandman one night. Thanks Jim.

Did drive by a "fishermen flop house" at East Chop - loads of buggies there. Anyone from this site?

DZ...that was probably the houe organized by Paul O'Donell (elder from the former Portland (ME) Surfcasters) A lot of the Plum Island guys and a few MSBA are regulars there.

Dennis,

It was good to fish with you as well. As for the pathetic fishing I don't have any answers, it is just real poor this year. Albies are few and far between, a few years ago I think I had caught 60 some-odd...this year zero. But I do see some small pods breaking now and again but I am not really pursuing them everyday either but I still keep my eyes peeled. Worst year for albies in recent history.

The bones are around but not in great numbers either. One day I did well with them on the boat but they were all about 5.5#, nothing bigger. Been back since and got squat. I think it is realistic to catch them from shore this year if you target them. But there have been much better years with these as well.

Bass are around but numbers are thin and size is waaaay down. It is hardly worth pushing it to catch a 15# fish or two night after night. There were a couple good nights of bass fishing in the beginning of the derby where you would get a fish or a solid hit nearly every cast but again they were smaller fish with a 20#er being the rarity. But that ended and it's been a slow pick since. I fished some of the best spots on perfect conditions late mid week nights when I was sure I could hook up with something respectable and came away with 3 or 4 low teen fish for a lot of effort. Very depressing. When the Menmesha boys who know every rock around this place can't put a single 40 in the boat something is wrong. These guys can do this almost at will when the fish are here.

Bluefish are the relatively brighter spot this year. There are more of them and they seem to be bigger. Yesterday I was doubling up on 10-12# blue fish all morning. But they are not busting on top. I think there have been some up to 16# caught already.

What happened for fall run surface blitz's? when I was a kid this was a daily occurance, you could count on it every morning. But according to the experts at the DMF, all is well and stocks are high, so I guess I am just a crappy fishermen who doesn't know what I doing.:wall:

So, that is the derby fishing status as I see it. But like most fishermen I am an optimist, I think it will bust wide open tomorrow!!:uhuh:

best of luck to you.

Or hopefully starting on Saturday but i'll be with peter so we will at least catch a buzz by most nites end. At least he has a sand permit for the truck so we don't have to lug his diet beer cross country. A BBQ would be real nice.

Wish I could be there guys. Enjoy the opportunity. If you catch a great fish that's the icing onthe cake. Grab an ice cream, go to the weigh in and head out to the shore for a good night of bass fishing. Tight lines!

DZ...that was probably the houe organized by Paul O'Donell (elder from the former Portland (ME) Surfcasters) A lot of the Plum Island guys and a few MSBA are regulars there.

If it was the big red place on Laurel Ave, then it's the place Patrick describes. I stay there every year with the old men along with my brother and a buddy of ours. This was the first year we had a group albie skunking in the 12+ we've been targeting them (shore only). Most of the albies weighed in this year are from boat. Hopefully this weather change over the next 24 hours turns things on for the shore guys.

BasicPatrick
09-30-2010, 08:13 AM
We are seeing albies in a few spots but they are well offshore an out of reach...there are also many podes of rat blues that some are mistaking for albies

I'd bet big money those big albies are coming from across the pond along the Falmouth, Cotuit or Craigville shorelines. Out on teh edge of the boundaries but in bounds.

this has been my toughest derby in 6 years... I usually hit a slam from the boat and 3 of 4 from shore.

this is the first year I have failed to hang a fish since 1975... and to make matters worse all the XL shirts, sweatshirts were sold out the first week!

Hey Basic Patrick...How's Ron McKee doing in the MV Derby? He took second last year didn't he. Who is in your fish shack this year.?

ProfessorM
10-06-2010, 06:11 PM
Ron told me he is having the worst Derby he ever had, along with several others too. I came home late yesterday as the wind was so strong it made fishing really hard on Sunday thru yesterday and I did not even see a fish caught. Good luck to you guys still there.

10-09-2010, 05:56 PM
Yesterdays daily winner list shows Frank O'Rourke (Swimmer) as a daily winner under the mystery prize category but fails to list his catch???? I don't know if Frank won a daily for Bluefish or Albie???

Anyway....Congrats Frank!!!:uhuh:

Paul, did you go back over to Peter's? I told you that thing was the ticket for albies when I was there. What are you going to name it?

Peter had a friend come back to day. He's all by his self now. I thought about going back over but got stuff to do and also wanted to try for some albies in my tin boat if the wind ever lets me get out. He still has yet to see a fish caught by anyone. He has Larry syndrome
We ran into Frank and his bro out at the gut one day last week. Good for him.
I never really gave it much thought Ross as to a name. Maybe I'll call it the Pray.. PIA would:uhuh: be a better name as that is what they are to make.

nice . George had a whopper yesterday , not that big though.

Mr. Sandman
10-12-2010, 09:58 PM
I was right next to these guys. There were some big blues out there today. When I got out there and dropped over a fresh bunker, it lasted all of two seconds and my rod was doubled over only to have my 60# wire leader bit off. I think we could see an 18 before the derby is out.

The biggest blue I landed was 12.04 and it did not even make the board.:wall:

I think I am done with the boat fishing in this derby. It's becoming too much like work and I am not having fun at it. I spent a full day finding fresh bunker and even then bass just played with them beating them up and would not eat the damn things. I'm done.

Will try a few more nights for (shore) bass and maybe a morning for albies (just cause I like them) but for the most part this is it for me. Crappy derby this year for me. It was just not my time.

One thing I have noticed as I have gotten older, my drive to fish hard has dropped off. When I was younger I Would fish 24/7, and did whatever it took to hook up. Now, it's a different story, I still like to fish but I am not driven to fish. (My wife and kids would disagree with me) but I just don't have it anymore.

If the fishing were better, you would have more energy.Suck fishing takes more out of you both physically and between the ears.

I headed over to the derby this year with great anticipation - new moon, plenty of bait, there was NO WAY the fishing could be as bad as last year. Unfortunately, I was right. IT WAS WORSE!!! Fished hard 6 nights, eels and everything else, walked miles to find clean water and managed a total of 1 bass for the week, and that was while fishing for Albies! Our group managed 4 bass for the week, and fortunately, one of them was a big girl(only a few days left Paul. Was that you I heard praying for a nor'easter?). Always a great time on MV, but as SeaDangles said, my will to fish was zapped. The last night we spent on Wasque, planned on throwing eels all night but never even made it out of the truck. I did manage a couple albies as did most of the crew, and a couple dozen squid but without Gilly around to stew them, even that was little consolation.

Next year?!?!
