We need fishermen to show up on September 28 in Newport RI mid morning and help us get some real regulations to limit these boats. Any S_B members that come...I will by lunch.

Hello
Havent been on here in a while... was going to post some info about this as well. Have friends that were fishing off of Chatham this past week and saw piles and piles of 40-50lb bass dead floating around from the herring trawlers that have been in the area... very sad

What your friends saw goes on every year down in that area.
All the bickering of commercial vs rec kill, those amounts combined are minute compared to what these boats kill (and dump over dead) every year !

Last year a few people took pictures. You could have scooped up all the 30- 40 + lb bass you wanted. Very sad. Blue dogs were just lazily eating them from the surface.

...wow, seems like an on-board observer is basically not observing everything.
just put there to make it sound as if the effort is being made to monitor.

Doesn't really surprise me. A lot of the observers are young kids not too far out of school, who are on a boat with 5-6 seasoned fisherman. If the pressure alone doesn't get to them, I'm sure that a captain or two has some "advice" for them. I'm sure that there are normal procedures on most boats that look legit that are actually not.

In my opinion, there should be 2 observers on every boat. That way, at least they feel like they aren't completely alone on the boat.

Yeah, I can just see the captain saying to that girl, stay over here in this little area and don't wander, its deadly for you to leave this little area where you can't see anything. You might "accidentaly" fall overboard and never be found.....
Nothin like goin through the motions......

I heard the spot on WEEI tonight just before 6:00 - which is just after the best part of the show - the Whiner Line. Great spot - thanks for bringing this issue to the public's attention.
