View Full Version : Ocean Sunfish on the Tube at Scorton
Liv2Fish 09-25-2010, 10:01 PM Anybody know if this thing could have actually chased down and eaten the tube? I couldn't believe it but it was actually hooked in the corner of the jaw.
Had to chase it with the boat for half an hour before we even saw it. I thought the paint was going to bubble on my reel.
nightfighter 09-26-2010, 12:30 AM Very cool catch! Even better that you got pics of it too....
numbskull 09-26-2010, 06:38 AM They eat jelly fish. I'd guess the line crossed its mouth and it got snagged. Cool catch either way.
JohnnyD 09-26-2010, 02:52 PM Sunfish... the fat, lazy American's of the sea.

I guess this means you've never been to the Bible Belt. Obesity in America pretty well correlates with conservative voting. Fat people, southern WalMart - skinny people, northern Starbucks.
mag minnow 09-26-2010, 03:51 PM Please explain California then...

And CrackerBarrel
mag minnow 09-26-2010, 04:07 PM It's a Sunfish thread but Cracker barrel does has it's share of Sunfish. 12.4 of Californian's are Sunfish. Nevada and Michigan are the only states with more Sunfish percentage wise..
big jay 09-26-2010, 04:18 PM Defiantely snagged. There were 4 there Saturday. I ran my lines right over one by accident.
Glad I didn't get lucky like you...
ProfessorM 09-26-2010, 06:58 PM Wow that is quite the catch. I agree snagged. Here is how close I got to one last week in 25 feet of water along Sandy Neck. I think it was sick because it didn't even try to dive down or run away. Just stayed right there. Also ran into this beast too in close a week before.
fish4striper 09-27-2010, 07:31 AM Guy I fish with alot like to touch animals whenever he can :

MakoMike 09-27-2010, 08:28 AM They eat jellyfish. It's not all that uncommon for springtime shark fishermen to catch them when the jelly combs pile up on the leader/hooks. They do put up a hell of a fight. They are not afraid of boats in the least, they sometime swim right up next to the boat when we are drifting for sharks. They love to have the back scratched with a deck brush!
JoeBass 09-27-2010, 08:37 AM That's amazing. great to have pics.
ProfessorM 09-27-2010, 02:32 PM LOL. that was great. I have a friend that does stuff just like that, never a dull moment.
is that who i think it is in the video?
Rockport24 09-27-2010, 03:08 PM that's freakin awesome! you had to chase it? so it fought pretty good?
fish4striper 09-27-2010, 03:18 PM is that who i think it is in the video?
yup, it's Bill, so far this year he's only touched a dolphin off the bow swimming along side. He wants to swim with a basking shark but we have't got close enough lately.
sorry for the thread hijack :smash:
bigbuck28 09-27-2010, 03:46 PM Profe we hooked that shark i think . It pounded a swim shad right off sandyneck and then booted. We got it to the boat an cut the line after a 20 minute fight. It was a huge brown shark.
ProfessorM 09-27-2010, 05:29 PM that was a 20 foot basking shark I am pretty sure. It was about 5 foot around.

PRBuzz 11-10-2011, 06:26 PM We hooked up a mola couple months back trolling live macs. Skippy grabbed the rod with the reel screaming and thought he had his striper of a life time, I looked back and saw the mola fly about 4-5ft out of the water at which time it threw the hook. Glad we did not have to turn and chase, nice clean C&R.
