Honest By Catch Action Alert--Tuesday Mtg in Newport RI Could Limit Mid Water Trawl Fleet
Tomorrow, September 28 is one of the most important meetings in many years for those of us that care about River Herring, Haddock, Marine Mammals and the Atlantic Herring forage base in our waters. From 11:30 until 5 pm at the Hotel Viking located at One Bellevue Ave. in Newport RI, the New England Fisheries Management Council will approve the "range of alternatives" to be considered in the Draft Environmental Impact Stud for Amendment 5 to the Atlantic Herring fisheries Management Plan.
Simply put, the council will make the final votes on the ideas that may end up in the final regulation and public hearing. This is the last meeting for new ideas. This is the meeting where the fight to put a cap on total number of River Herring this fleet can kill will happen. This is the meeting where managers will approve or reject the argument that ground fishermen and recs pay for our our data collection but the mid water trawl fleet does not have to.
This email is an all hands on deck call for attendance by recreational and commercial fishermen from New England. IT is time to clean up the mid water trawl fleet before they collapse our Herring stock like they did in the seventies. Please show up and we will stand together. If you can wear a Red or Shirt t show we ware red hot on these issues.
This is when we get our say...this is democracy...We endourage all fishermen to come make a statement together!!!!
