Anyone use the home depot dowels? im trying the birch dowels but they seem too soft and the wire digs in too easily. but if you use too dense of wood the jig wont swim. so what are you guys using that is readily available in dowels?

thanks
justin

Salty Bugger has blanks pre drilled and ready to turn at a reasonable price so check his website for details in the plug section. he also sells many excellent unpainted kits as well.

Birch dowels at HD?

Are you sure they aren't poplar or some kind of asian mystery wood?

Salty has great stuff for a nice price.

i think thats it. i thought it was birch. or beech not too up todate on woods. i turn everything by hand all i have is a belt sander and a bandsaw. so dowels are eaiser to work with for me. has anyone had any problem with the mystery wood? its the lighter color stuff and its not real dense...

I use the cheapo dowels for my pencils, the ones with the green painted ends...they hold up fine and the fish don't mind. :grins:
