View Full Version : Lung cancer and smokers
ecduzitgood 11-05-2010, 07:30 PM I heard on the radio this morning that 17 out of 100 people who smoke die from lung cancer, kinda makes me think this anti-smoking craze is a little overboard. And I don't know how they could figure that second hand smoke causes 1.3 people out of 100 to die from lung cancer. I have not looked into where or who did the study but figured this being Massachusetts somebody else can do the work for me;)

Another important thing to remember is that it does a lot of other damage. Throat Cancer, hardens arteries and leads to many cardiovascular issues (High Blood Pressure & Heart Attack, Stroke, Emphysema) etc. I’m sure there is more but that is off the top of my head
Backbeach Jake 11-05-2010, 08:17 PM Those odds were good enough to get me to quit. 17% is nearly 2 chances in 10. Not a way that I want to go...

Well smoke away then by all means!:smash: I personally think its the stupidest thing you can do but hey....what do I know! Fire em' up!
chrisjoe13 11-06-2010, 06:04 AM I am in the process of giving it up right now, but not out of fear of disease. My grandfather lived to be 81 and smoked 3 packs of Winstons a day. A colleague died last year of lung cancer and was a non-smoking health nut so you just don't know.
I still enjoy it a little but am really sick of being a slave.
I've never tried to give them up before but this will be it.
(BTW, no need to call anyone stupid)
Dick Durand 11-06-2010, 06:14 AM Nicotine is addictive, so quitting won't necessarily be easy. Nevertheless, go for it! In time, you'll feel better, be healthier, be rid of the curse, and have more money for fishing gear.
basswipe 11-06-2010, 06:21 AM 8yrs this month I've been free from butts.Best single thing I ever did.I've actually grown to despise the smell of them and sometimes unfortunately the smell of those who smoke them.
UserRemoved1 11-06-2010, 06:41 AM I used to hate the smell when I quit. It smells good enough now to want one 13 years later but I'd never do it. I don't like it when people blow at your face :1poke:

I quit directly out of fear of disease and not liking the fact I was a slave. I was a slave because it is a drug. Pure & simple. I was addicted. But being sick of it enough I put it down, went through withdrawal and just did not let myself have "one" when I wanted one.
I don't look down on people who smoke, have at it if they like. I just want to live as long as possible and smoking is not worth the risk for me anymore.
Good luck chrisjoe13.....
BigFish 11-06-2010, 07:51 AM BTW.....Don't put words in my mouth! I said it was a stupid thing to do......didn't call anyone stupid!:uhuh:

semantics....
Good luck chrisjoe13.....
thanks man.
BigFish 11-06-2010, 08:02 AM Yup! Its all how you slice it! BTW....You don't want to know how I really feel about smoking!:jump1:
goosefish 11-06-2010, 10:30 AM Off topic but--I got 1.5 years off the butts.
PRBuzz 11-06-2010, 04:50 PM I can't figure how people can afford to smoke anymore, especially teens in the formative years: $8/pack! Who doesn't smoke less than a pack a day. It was bad enough at $2/pack.
I smoked for 30+yrs, haven't had one since about '93.
Swimmer 11-06-2010, 06:19 PM Twenty years ago, this February 26th, 7:10 P.M.
Not that I am keeping track.
And it was the stoopidest thing I ever did in my life was to start smoking. At one time almost four packs a day. The worst thing was I didn't realize how much I made everything stink around me. My house, clothes, blah, blah, blah.
Cold turkey................cold turkey................

overboard on an anti-smoking craze? This isn't the 1700's, modern medicine and technology will tell you the stuff you inhale from cigarettes can and will cause you harm. It ends up costing all of us in society, even non smokers, since healthcare costs are higher because of stuff like emphazema, kind of like the way shoplifting rises costs of goods.
Secondhand smoke is nasty, some people are so sensitive to smoke, that they get instant headaches, wheeze and get sick. I have asthma and I can't tolerate smoke form others smoking anymore even outside I have to be upwind of someone or I'll move. It really sucks.
There is enough air pollution in our world already, no need to inhale anymore of it and add to it.
make sure you buy your smokes in a town that the majority of voters didn't vote to re-elect Barney ;)
Raven 11-07-2010, 07:01 AM its the Nicotine and THE ADDITIVES to make the tobacco smoke smoother and or uniformly
resin from cannabis is the cure for cancer but because the pharmaceutical companies can't make a profit from a plant
that could easily grow in your back yard this info is ignored 100 %
BigFish 11-07-2010, 08:42 AM So there is a cure for cancer people are ignoring because they can't profit from it??

Damn - Cannibas is the cure for everything? Inflation, cancer, taxes, eel longevity and color, the Space Program.
Smoking sucks.
Raider Ronnie 11-07-2010, 10:24 AM I remember years ago when some considered it "cool" to smoke.
(Wasn't it Joe Cool the guy on the billboards )
Not I see someone with one I laugh and wonder if they realize how pathetic they look, let alone how bad they stink.
Stupid !
JohnnySaxatilis 11-07-2010, 02:29 PM be rid of the curse, and have more money for fishing gear.

saltfly 11-07-2010, 02:55 PM Nov.2 1973 steaming down Chesepeake Bay heading to the Middle East for 7+ months.Butts were $1.10 a"carton" at sea and $.45 in a machine[rememeber them].I knew if I didn't quit then I'd probibly never quit.Best thing I've ever done for myself. But I think smokers are getting the shaft in general these days.
Raven 11-07-2010, 03:21 PM So there is a cure for cancer people are ignoring because they can't profit from it??
considering that it was discovered in the mid 70's - yep
and has been ever since....
they couldn't let the cancer "industry" collapse then or Now
(and all the associated drugs) with it
the Government knows... its the same old plausible deny ability trick
to such outrageous levels that know one can even imagine a
government so heartless.
Adam_777 11-07-2010, 03:28 PM So hash cures cancer ? I should be set for life from the bricks of it I've tested in the past.:jump1:

Aye that. When I quit cigs I quit gange for fear of cross smoking. I learned better and one can replace the other. And it turns food into cuisine...

Bingo. There are so many other complications that come with it. Not to mention people that smoke recover significantly slower from colds and the flu than non-smokers.

one is: it acts like an aphrodisiac but just on the first day
after not enjoying it for a week or so.
talk about boing
Saltheart 11-10-2010, 01:06 PM I just can't believe the people who do multi packs a day at $8+ a pack. Even 1 pack a day is $250 a month. Two packs a day is very common amongst smokers and that's $500 a month.
I don't like the smell of tobacco smoke right off the butt but the smell of cigarette smoke on peoples cloths and hair , etc is just digusting. There are even some pipe tobacco smells I like but stale butt smell on people makes me gag.
Raven 11-10-2010, 04:47 PM wHEN I WAS GROWING UP AND HUNTING AT AGE 14 ,15 ,16
OOPS CAPS sorry all the older men (my instructors)were
in their mid thirties and up
that all taught me: re loading, Pheasant ,duck, deer and fishing.... ect.
all smoked cherry tobacco out of a pipe....
so now........... just smelling that
LAUNCHs me right back into the PAST.
Slingah 11-10-2010, 09:47 PM New Warning Labels.......good stuff
Proposed Cigarette Product Warning Labels (http://www.fda.gov/TobaccoProducts/Labeling/CigaretteProductWarningLabels/default.htm)
Raven 11-11-2010, 05:21 AM when the tobacco companies switch products
then and only then -->will be the right step
if they had removed the nicotine from tobacco originally
they would have had no addicted mass population
so.......
now they are making a KILLING "literally"
on the Chinese population for the most part
i always remind people (these words always fall on deaf ears)
that nicotine was the ONLY "insecticide " out of
every single manufactured bug killer except for maybe DDT
(which got banned) that would kill the cotton boworm bug..
you can't make blue jeans or PRINT tons and tons of Money
if the cotton crop is decimated by an infestation of insects
FishermanTim 11-12-2010, 11:58 AM Yeah, but there is an increase deaths caused by passing out w/ a mouthful of Doritos
Or twinkies!
