niko I'll probably be going the weekend after thanksgiving... Slammer pollock are a blast.

I went yesterday and it was a slam . . . all over some rough bottom that ate jigs like candy. That and double-headers shredding too light leaders . . . but not mine - I was using 150 pound test :uhuh:

We ended up getting back to the dock an hour and a half late cause we had to bob around outside the harbor while the 3 mates cut the last of the fish - took then over three hours to cut fish.

There were about 50 on the CLipper and between bodies, gear and coolers things were a little "tight" .. . Josh, George and Anthony worked their butts off gaffing, tangles and everything else . . . we had a moon tide so we had to contend with that and some tangles were inevitable but most managed OK.

Everyone that knew which end of the rod to hold had 10 + fish - mostly all in the teens - pool fish was 26 or so. All fish were on jigs and teasers - bait did nothing.

If anyone goes I recommend a long strong leader - with no teaser - you'll catch plenty of fish with the jig alone, and avoid many of the tangles adn botton obsctuctions as well. As for jigs, use the cheapest 12 - 16 ounce diamond jigs you have.

Sorry - no pictures.

Yeah, if I can weigh in on this, what's the details? Boat, Harbor, etc.?

Not sure I will be around, but used to fish a lot of pollock and if timing works right and you wouldn't mind another, would be interested in the details ... thanks

Niko,
I'm leaving this up to you. Yankee does
full day or half day apparently from
different locations. What do you
suggest?? Full day of heavy seas is
going to be rough.

Sorry.

I may show up, depends on what I end up doing tomorrow. Are you guys planning on doing the 7-4 or the 6-3?

If I can't make it, I hope to go next weekend... Anyone who can't go this weekend can meet up next. :buds: and fresh fish at my place afterwards

niko
11-27-2010, 07:42 AM
it's a 7 o'clock boat tomorrow. if anyone else wants to go just call and book a spot. as of this morning she said the boat was not very busy for tomorrow. for those who havn't done this before - these fish are super aggresive. as long as the captain finds a pile the fishing is lock and load. they hit anything that moves, grow to 30#, double headers of nice fish are pretty common, and fight like big bluefish.

had a good day. plenty of pollock out there. ended up w/ 18 fish. lumpy out there - the guys on the bow were getting bounced around and soaked. bite was hot as soon as we made the first drop. blue dog hung around and munched a few fish. mate's spent about 4 hours cutting fish. my shoulders and arms are still sore

awesome - any size to them? also, is this fishery on as long as seas are safe, or will it be winding down for the winter? have travel next few weeks/weekends but hoping it might be available in a few weeks

biggest for me was around 20# w/ most in their teens. saw a handful of fish in the mid twenty pound range. yankee does trips in dec but i think you need to sign up for a e-mail/will call list. historically there is a pretty good winter bite. last spring there was a nice spring push on the bank. we were on my boat last may and catching them on light tackle - screaming drags on the abu 6500's. pretty fun

We had a day this past spring catching them on top water. Insane non stop bite !
Couldn't put a jig down 5-10 ft without doubling up.
