Called that one! Sox signed Varitek to a one year deal! Painted themselves into a corner by losing Martinez!!! Glad to have Tek though.....I like the way he handles the pitching staff!

Yankees are now making a run at Crawford. If the Sox end up losing Beltre and Martinez and sign only Werth out of the remaining FA's, Theo's gonna have some splainin' to do. I'd be happy if they signed Crawford and brought Beltre back, along with beefing up the bullpen.

The Tek signing is nice, but not the splash they need to make to keep pace with the Yanks.

Isn't the amount they signed Jason Varitek for the same amount that the Sox needed to increase their offer to Victor Martinez?

When are the Sox going to stop with these garbage 1 or 2 year contracts and actually form a long term strategy?

There are already whispers of "bridge year" again.

But, but, but---he's a great handler of pitchers. And Dice K is SO much more comfortable with Tek catching him--for the 40 innings or so he'll pitch between stints on the DL :rotf2:

So, for that $2 million, instead of a .310 average, 25 HR and 80-100 RBI, they get a guy who'll be lucky to hit .220, hit 10 HR and have about 50 RBI. With an equally bad throwing arm, and whose idea of catching the knuckleball is chasing it to the backstop and holding the runner on first to second. Assuming he can still throw from the backstop to third on one bounce. :rollem:

But look at the bright side--they still have JD Drew pulling down $17 million or so a year.

"Bridge year" refers to the fans who'll be lining up to take a header off the Tobin ;)

It's more like a Haywood Sullivan move.

I guess it frees up more of John Henry's money to go sign more British soccer free agents.

I guess that if they actually do sign Gonzalez, they replace V-Mart's bat.

But for $2 million per spread over a few years--which wouldn't affect next year's payroll--they could have ADDED his bat and kept Martinez's, and wished Varitek a nice thank-you for all of his years and good luck in a new place.
