View Full Version : Smart Phone Useful Apps
PRBuzz 12-13-2010, 08:39 PM Not sure this hasn't already been done but any use to listing useful (free) apps to load onto iPhone/Droid/BB?
Anyone use tideApp (http://www.tideapp.com/) ?
Downloaded onto my Droid and seems to be a very useful ap?
tysdad115 12-13-2010, 09:36 PM I haven't tried it yet, I have the droid2. Its amazing.

Checked this out today, WOW for 10 £ (about $14) it is a great backup for the boat GPS!
Thanks

fish4striper 12-15-2010, 09:18 AM I had my g/f add the navionics to her droid, it works nice. The other app we added to look for thuderstorms that works well is "rainy days"
Mr. Sandman 12-15-2010, 09:24 AM Navionics App. Its not free but its a great back-up.
It's worth every penny!!! I love that ap. I use it as a back up to my back up on my boat (hence I rarely need on it) BUT have used it MANY times on other peoples boat(s). This thing is ***better*** than the inexpensive GPS plotters I have seen on some boats. (no kidding) There is still a few improvements they can make though.
A fun one around lady friends is .... the fireplace ap (like the guy in the Capt Morgan commercial "the best idea you every had!" I have Barry White as my music selection:biglaugh:
The marine weather ap is great (use it multiple times a day)
I had "family map" that allowed me to keep real time track of my teenagers (in google earth) (but unfortunately, the lawyers got involved and now it tells them they are being tracked. This defeats the purpose and they turn off their phone if they don't want me to track them so I canceled the service.
sb.com needs an ap (I don't know what it should do through...maybe display real time fishing reports with GPS positions :rotf2: )
ProfessorM 12-15-2010, 09:36 AM will a lot of these apps work on the Touch? I am getting the new 4 G Touch for X- Mas. I have never used any apps as my previous touch didn't have any extra room with all my music, this one has much more space. Be real hard to live without one of these things now.
BTW what the hell does 4 G mean anyway? 4th generation? what is the bottom line? speed, memory, just more advanced technology?
kenyee 12-15-2010, 09:38 AM I'm an android user so:
"creelcard" for tracking fishing data
"fishin 2 go lite" for when you are bored and want some simulated fun
I use a Moto Cliq, but the Moto Defy is the first waterproof smart phone I know of and would be ideal for fishing...too bad they had to add that motoblur crap on it so it'll take forever to get new android versions :-P
influx99 12-15-2010, 12:53 PM I have yet to find one free weather app that does everything I'm looking for, so I have several (all free):
Accuweather
TWC
WeatherBug
WeatherEye
iWeatherFree
Then I also have
Tides
Bing Maps
GPS Lite
Trailhead
The Onion
And there's one called Free Apps which shows a list of apps that usually cost money that are offered for free as promotions for short time periods.
WESTPORTMAFIA 12-15-2010, 01:42 PM does the navionics chart plot
Clogston29 12-15-2010, 02:51 PM google sky map is cool
TideApp on android is ok, not the most user friendly though
Magic Seaweed on android is useful. Its basically long range (7 day) forcest for surfers with predicted wave hight, period and direction; wind speed and direction; and weather for the next week. There are tons of beaches/spots to choose from on there so getting one near where you fish is pretty easy.

If I had money to burn, I'd buy a portable cell phone signal blocker and carry it with me at the Canal.

Skies of Glory is the best app ever... WWII dog fights
Gremlin 12-15-2010, 07:45 PM Try Magic Seaweed. Awesome free App has spots and the current weather conditions, tides, etc.

Both iphone and droid.
PRBuzz 12-19-2010, 07:29 PM Navionics App. Its not free but its a great back-up.
NAVIONICS: The Leader in Electronic Charts (http://www.navionics.com/NavionicsMobile.asp)
Useful link depending upon your hardware.
Chunkah 12-19-2010, 07:53 PM Tide App
Radar Now
The Weather Channel
Magic Seaweed Surf Forecasts
Google Earth
Google Maps
...all on Android
The Navionics app looks cool too
Frankiesurf 12-19-2010, 08:30 PM A couple of friends have that Tideapp. It has been off from Noaa Tide charts in almost every circumstance we used it in.
ivanputski 12-19-2010, 10:06 PM I refuse to come out of pocket and the technology shadows for a smart phone until they make the phone we ALL need, and they are fully capable of making:
Smart phone that is:
* Waterproof
*8 + megapixel camera WITH flash...
Until my demands are met, this new so-called necessity will remain an un-purchased luxury...
*carry on....
i find tideapp buggy
the bluefin marine weather is good, and also has tides so that is what I use.
kenyee 12-23-2010, 12:00 PM Smart phone that is:

Almost there....Motorola Defy is an Android phone that's weather resistant (but I've a photo with it in a cup of water), but only has a 5MP camera and that godawful Motoblur junk (my Cliq has it and it slugs when it syncs)-:
bassballer 12-23-2010, 02:25 PM Great thread.
Navionics is awesome.
Tide app is ok.
definitley going to to download magic seaweed right now.
PRBuzz 02-01-2011, 07:49 AM For those of you with membership to BoatUS, there is now an ap for the Android platform. Useful emergency contact info and location transmission.
Mr. Sandman 02-01-2011, 08:25 AM Red Laser is a very useful ap
I was in a marine store and was looking at a new compass for the boat. I found the one I want and the price looked good. You click red laser, and it reads the bar-code using the cell phones camera. You hear a beep when it acquires just like at the checkout stand. Then tells you about the item and its cost. But then using the GPS is knows where you are and then finds the exact item in other nearby stores and lists the price. The stores are arranged by nearest distance. It also has a tab for online retailers as well. Within 20 seconds I found out that I could save 30 bucks buy walking across the street to a retailer there who had 3 in stock! Or I could save 37 dollars by getting it online. pretty useful.
PRBuzz 04-26-2011, 01:09 PM Red Laser is a very useful ap
Thanks for that one! Happened to be in a shoe store in Chicago, new boat shoes $100 + 9% tax......scanned the box barcode and found Amazon had for $56, 0$ Tax, $0 shipping. I had them ordered from Amazon before leaving the store and on my doorstep 2 days later.
PS I knew exactly what size to order since I tried them on in the store.
Mr. Sandman 04-26-2011, 03:10 PM My kid told me about that one.
Another one that I found out about is card vault. You enter in all your discount cards and when you check out it displays the barcode at the checkout. You can then empty your wallet with the stack of cards. I have used it a number of times and it works OK. It does not do CC's just things like stop and shop, membership cards, etc.
IGFA has an ap that is fun to look at when you have some down time and useful as well with lots of species info...but it is kind of expensive.
Animated "grog Knots" I look at this often and it is useful. Lots of good knots: Basics, Boating, Climbing, Fishing. Scouting, Rescue, Household.
Tunein Radio: get any radio station pretty much. I use this to listen to the Bruins when I am out of town. (It uses a lot of battery and the phone gets hot after a long time of use)
BoatUS has an ap, it is free and seems somewhat useful but I have not really used it yet.
I have another ap called "Float Plan" you keep all your contact info in there as well as boat info and before you leave you can send out an email to those that should expect you back at some time. If they have to call the CG they have all the info. Again, I tested it and it seems to work but I have not really used it.
Liv2Fish 04-26-2011, 06:12 PM My Blackberry really blows!!!!!!!!!!!
The only useful app it can handle is not actually an app but Wunderground.com has a great mobile tab that tells weather, marine weather and tide and current (when applicable) by zip code.:wall:
Bazza 04-26-2011, 07:27 PM Lots of good apps listed here. I just got the new iphone last week. I have been looking for some apps for it. I am new to the whole smart phone thing, went from the basic flip phone with no texting
Moses 04-26-2011, 07:46 PM Android related
Boat Ramp APP - by TAKEMEFISHING.org
CardStar - sounds similar to one above. Scan all your discount keychain barcodes (ie CVS, S&S, etc..)
Call Confirm - since I used to always "pocket dial" folks by mistake
Compass
First Aid Guide
KnotsGuide
Shazam - since I'm bad with song titles & artists
tlapinski 04-30-2011, 07:41 AM Just upgraded to a Droid-X yesterday, time to start loading up on apps. So far all I grabbed are Pandora and Stupid Zombies, neither of which will aid in fishing unless I am waiting on the tide to turn.
Going to start playing around with it today as I want to get solid tide & weather apps.
PRBuzz 04-30-2011, 07:54 AM I have another ap called "Float Plan" you keep all your contact info in there as well as boat info and before you leave you can send out an email to those that should expect you back at some time. Couldn't find that one but isn't that the same/similar as the BoatUS ap? I have BoatUS loaded.
Steve K 05-02-2011, 04:03 PM Sit or Squat - It has helped me find a bathroom when I needed one.
AT Grimaldi 05-26-2011, 11:38 AM No doubt a "Tell you when and where the bass are hitting in the Canal" app real soon. :fury:
If I had money to burn, I'd buy a portable cell phone signal blocker and carry it with me at the Canal.
No need. Turning off your cell phone isn't as effective as one might like to think. Simply removing the battery from the phone will suffice.

Liv2Fish 01-14-2012, 03:14 PM Finally ditched the BBRY and got an iPhone. Just bought these two apps and they're pissa.
GPS Kit from Garafa LLC. I like this one for marking spots along a long shore line. With any cell signal at all this will get with in 3 meters. Also helpful if you need to summons help to a remote area. GPS coordinates are easily displayed.
NOAA Buoy and Tide data - This one rules for the tides and current speeds etc.
chefchris401 12-29-2012, 07:17 PM just got a new iphone seeing my other was covered by warranty, figured id bump this up and see what other apps people like or new ones that came out.
ProfessorM 12-29-2012, 07:32 PM Whats a smart phone? Sounds like an oxymoron to me. I think they are all a royal PIA especially all the ones being used on the highway weaving all over the friggin road.
Sky gamblers storm raiders is a blast if you are looking for a fun game

TheSpecialist 01-01-2013, 12:28 PM I like Motion X gps, I can save tracks, and waypoints like tree stands when I am deer hunting, and walk boundaries, trails and deer runs. I then email this stuff to myself and import it into Google Earth and then print up detailed maps for myself and my hunting buddies, it makes scouting and hunting my deer Areas so much easier. I am sure when I get the boat back on the water I will be able to do the same thing, but at that point I will also get the Navionics...

You might want to take a look at "My Tracks" also, seems to do a lot of the same.
