View Full Version : Christmas ZB
Striper_Haven_03 12-22-2010, 03:37 PM Hi All,
I havent posted in awhile....been pretty damn busy and finally on vacation on Lake Hartwell, GA with the wife and her family. Drinking sweet tea vodkas,PBRs and eating more southern BBQ than my belly can handle. In other words life is good!
Anyway, on to my question: My wife suddenly told me she decided to buy me a fishing reel of my choice for X-Mas and I decided to go w/ a ZB . My question is what model would serve me best....the 22 or 25. I fish mostly from the rocks,25lb mono, big eels and needles. I know both have adequate drag, line capacity but was wondering if one model would benefit me more than the other.
Thanks in advance. I hope you all have a safe and happy holidays.

fishbones 12-22-2010, 04:08 PM I'd go with the 25. The extra line capacity and drag may come in handy, and the weight difference is negligible.
JohnR 12-22-2010, 04:36 PM 25 or 27 - no questions asked. I have a 22 and thought I would loose a fish - I upgraded to the reel to 27
MassBass 12-22-2010, 04:52 PM my suggestion is based on what size rod you use. rods 10'-11' i'd go with the 25. anything over 11' and the 27 fits best. rods under 10' do well with the 22. it's more about balance as even the 22 is more than capable of turning any size bass out in the surf. good luck with the reel.

Agreed :uhuh:
25, no need of the retrieve speed of the 27 unless you like a particularly fast retrieve IMO.
I think you said you were a Penn guy previously. You might want to check to see what the retrieve ratio was of your favorite penn and look to get the ZB that is comparable. None of them will fail you on line capacity.
JohnR 12-22-2010, 05:33 PM I never thought that the 22 couldn't turn or stop a fish - the drag is sweet. I was however concerned of getting a nice running fish at the very end of the cast.
25 or 27
Mike P 12-22-2010, 05:39 PM Aren't all the spools interchangeable nowadays?

I couldn't see running 25# mono on the 22, so the 25 would be the minimum I would suggest.
What do spare spools run, $200 or so? Get the 25 as the gift, and pick up a spare 27 spool for extra insurance sometime down the road.
Striper_Haven_03 12-23-2010, 09:56 AM I fish a 10' rod and the ratio on the Penn 560 is 4.6:1, so I think the 25 is a much faster retrieve, which is good. I like the fact that I will have a bunch more line capacity to play with as this was a major concern with the 560 when fighting fish over the 30# class, particularly when the fish hit and run at the beginning of the retrieve point....been down to the gold several times this past year, not a good feeling.
Thanks for your help guys, looks like its going to be the 25. I decided not to go with the Torque as its not as "tested" as a ZB or VS. Although I like Penns products and have had good luck with my 2 -560s, I dont want to learn the hard way when I have a world class striper on @ 1am in heavy surf. I just want to trust the equipment and only have to worry about the footing, fight and landing point.
Merry Christmas!
