View Full Version : Portly Angler 2011
JohnR 01-01-2011, 01:30 PM Its that time of year - S-B Portly Angler competition ;) . Have you found yourself in this position before?
Waders getting a little tight?
Huffing and puffing more?
Wearing your wetsuit on new moons only?
Tired of the young whippersnappers beating you to your rock?
Have you been asking yourself:
"Does this wetsuit make me look fat?"
Knock down some of that spare tire, and join S-B members Biggest Friekin' Looser competition a/k/a the Portly Angler
2009 winner - ZachS
2010 winner - JRedfly
Cost, is one plug to winner. We'll arrange to get the plugs in early this year (trust me, that will be better, much better)
When does it begin? Seeing we have a late start, anytime starting over the next two weeks will certainly be OK. The longer you wait, the more disadvantage you may be under.
Weekly weigh ins?
Track percentage lost with greatest percentage winning.
No surgical or like methods. A friend had lap band surgery and lost 80 pounds in a couple months mostly due to the resulting infection. This doesn't mention the nasty operation needed to get the infection under control.
What else?
Who's in:
John R - Week 1, starting 320
(Really sad, pathetic, but at least 8 pounds less than this time last year)
chefchris401 01-01-2011, 03:16 PM I'm in, 270 on Jan 1st. :(
My plan is to get down to at least 220, my ideal goal is 205. And stay there.
Where do I send the plugs John ? I'll also throw in some bucktails and siwashs I tied.
Thanks and here's to a healthier skinner new year!!!!

Good luck!

Plus with all the snow I haven't been able to run. Got out today though wearing shorts and couldn't believe it was high 50's on Jan 1. The L St. Brownies must of thought they were in Hawaii.

BigFish 01-06-2011, 08:36 AM I lost 20 pounds last season! Cut out "ALL" the goodies I like, changed my diet by cutting out all white breads, potatoes and pasta as much as possible. Portion control I think was huge! Instead of 3 sandwiches or 3 hamburgers which was the norm......the rule was "1"! If I had a sandwich or a burger I had it on a deli slim roll, wheat. Also no beef burgers.....turkey burgers and they are pretty good actually! Riding my canal bike was also a huge benefit as I would do 15 miles a day a minimum of 3 days a week and most often 4 days a week! Kayak also gave me a great workout!!! I went from a personal high of 313 pounds to 293 pounds in 2 months and held there all season until the holidays came....ahhhhh the holidays! Back to 304 right now! My goal is to get back to 293 before the season starts in March and see how much more I can drop from 293 if I maintain the same regimen??
Good luck all!:)
The Dad Fisherman 01-06-2011, 10:06 AM Larry, Embrace the Potato...one of the healthiest veggies out there.
WHFoods: Potatoes (http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=48)
I agree w/ the pasta and the bread....but if you are going to do it....go whole wheat...a little better for you
the big key is calories.......the 1 sandwich thing is key.....I took that same approach...good one to have. Portions definitely make a difference.
but in the process you want those calories to be of the beneficial nature....don't give up eating things that are healthy for you.
BigFish 01-06-2011, 10:21 AM I did not mention that but we did go whole wheat on everything and the whole wheat pasta is excellent!! Its all or nothing with me and potatoes...butter, cream cheese the whole 9 yards! I don't enjoy them otherwise!! I like em' mashed with all the fixin's! See you next Thanksgiving Mashies!!

Hhaha Okay. Thanks for sharing that! Good luck with dropping the poundage...
jredfly 01-08-2011, 04:54 PM For those of you thinking of joining the Portly Angler and those already in.
I am down a total of 50 pounds from my last two year checkup and I owe the Portly Angler contest for getting me started, giving me something to keep track of and a little added incentive of winning some nice plugs.
The way I did it was pretty similar to what Big Fish did. I got off the white flour based products (pasta and bread) and got onto wheat. Portion control was huge, plus educating myself on eating better food which seems to be an endless task. The last thing was the exercise which has been pretty cool because it has been a great example for my kids.
If you don't want to list your weight send a PM and just your percentage will be shown. So if you're thinking of getting in, just do it. It is a pretty good group of people and lots of fun. What do you have to lose but a few pounds. :jump1:
BrianS 01-10-2011, 11:09 AM Im in, but I wont have my starting weight till Wed...
The Dad Fisherman 01-10-2011, 11:32 AM 215 this morning.....down 1.2 lbs....might have done better if it wasn't for that damn play-off football
jredfly 01-10-2011, 10:15 PM Going to do weekly Monday night weigh-ins this year. Try to have them in by 10:00 PM. If late just try and update ASAP.
If we could have all plugs 2 weeks from tonight January 24th that would be great (I will PM address). Thanks!
I'm in at 183 down a pound.
The Dad Fisherman down 1.2 lbs 0.56%
Jredfly down 1 lbs 0.54%
And I didn't think that .2 pound would make a difference :uhuh:

jredfly 01-17-2011, 09:16 AM Great news for everyone that may have had some really good playoff food yesterday, the Bossman has declared that the Portly Angler Challenge will run until June 1st this year.
Other news is that the 1st place winner will have his first pick of plugs and second place will receive the remaining three.
I PM'd everyone my mailing address - so lets get those plugs in. Your name will be checked off when plug is recieved on the weekly posting.
Those of you guys I will see at the monthly MSBA meeting can just give me your plugs then.
Thanks, Jredfly

Hey Dad, at least you are not going the wrong way like I am. :wall:

JohnR 03-24-2011, 12:20 PM JRedfly - me thinks you are trying to throw this year's competition - I'm on to you :devil2:
jredfly 03-24-2011, 04:27 PM JRedfly - me thinks you are trying to throw this year's competition - I'm on to you :devil2:
I wish I was throwing it - the snow kept me from running and work has been off the wall. Starting to get outside with the kids practicing baseball and with the good weather coming hoping to get in exercise mode which helps with diet mode. Let's see if we can turn this ship around and get it going in the right direction.

jredfly 03-30-2011, 09:48 PM Not bad for everyone that was hanging around all that healthfood at the shows the past few weeks. :jump1:
chefchris401 04-02-2011, 10:27 AM Joined the gym this week finally.
Went today and did the elliptical, only did one mile but thought I was going to die.
Legs feel like jello and I'm sweating like a fat kid in a candy store.
Be back a few times next week.
You get two personal training sessions when you sign up so at least I'll be pointed in the right direction.

jredfly 04-18-2011, 08:12 PM Up another 2. Time to get moving - I think I have given everyone enough of a head start. :jump:
Good thing this is going till June 1. I am thinking I am :deadhorse:
Gonna try and shoot for 2 pounds or more per week to close this thing out so I can at least make it respectable and give me some incentive.
Anyone one else want to throw out some target goals? :jump1:
jredfly 04-19-2011, 09:13 PM Nice going Pam! Keep it up. :uhuh:
How about just checking in with some weights guys?
A little more than 6 weeks to go. :soon: Let's finish strong. :gh:
kearp1 04-26-2011, 03:41 PM Ok holding steady this week no loss but no gain!!
BasicPatrick 05-02-2011, 10:46 AM Monday May 2
269...WOO HOOOO!!!!
I really started this diet adjustment on Nov 1 and I was 299 so outside this contest my weight loss is now at 30 pounds!!
One month in the contest means I start exercise now!
jredfly 05-02-2011, 08:40 PM No weight loss this week but I did start to get into a running routine. Hopefully it will show on the scales next week.
Way to go Patrick keep it up! :uhuh:

Nice. I also started before and I'm down about 20 all told. But I had a 1 month period around the holidays putting a couple back on.
307 - Status Quo.
jredfly 05-10-2011, 06:05 AM YAHOOOOOO! Down a whole pound this week. :smash:
JohnR 05-13-2011, 09:49 AM 309 +2 :wall:
(minor GI Irritability tossed system out of whack - not that system was working or nothing.)
jredfly 05-16-2011, 06:09 AM Stayed even this week but that was'nt bad considering it was my birthday and I splurged a little. Gonna shoot a big week next week. :jump1:
BasicPatrick 05-18-2011, 01:32 AM Still at 269 and if I hold after this upcoming weekend's MBBA Spring Meet I will be happy....after that it is sweat factory time to catch the leader.
BasicPatrick 05-23-2011, 06:45 PM 268 Down 1 on a weekend I would have expected to go the other way.
Does anyone have any closing strategies with a little over a week to go? I have decided that fasting starts tomorrow and laxatives next sunday.
Bye the way did I state that I hate the rules of this contest? It's like competing against a ghost when people do not post a weigh in.
Are there any special rules to the final weigh in???
BasicPatrick 05-26-2011, 08:18 AM No update this week....No one else weighs in....what's up....Am I the only one playing in this contest....
Oh #^&#^&#^&#^&....I Win??????
jredfly 05-26-2011, 09:54 PM Way to go keeping up with the steady weight loss Kearp1 (Pam).
Last week people - think we gave June 1st as the end date.
Anyone that has not sent in a plug please remember to do so. I will send one PM as a reminder with my addy. You can check the "Plug sent in" column on the attached chart to see if I recieved it OK. I know everyone on this site are great people and have tons of plugs but people simply forget and it is not done on purpose.
Even if you don't win we are all winners because we at least attempted to give it a try. I learned last year that although the plugs are nice it is not all about that but more about getting healthy and being around for our loved ones. :gh:
No Monday night weigh in next week just post your weight on June 1st and I will tally up everything on June 2nd. Good luck! :uhuh:
BasicPatrick 05-31-2011, 11:40 PM My final weight for this contest is 267. Congrats to Pam!!!!!
jredfly 06-01-2011, 06:23 PM Worked out all week and ate right but still no weight loss. It's just going to take some time after being inactive over the winter. Running three miles, three times a week comfortably at this point. Going to start training to do a half marathon in the fall if this old body will hold out. When I started this thing last winter I had a hard time walking 30 minutes. Thank you Portly Angler! :uhuh::uhuh::uhuh:
JohnR 06-02-2011, 11:55 AM Congrats Pam :btu:
I weighed myself 3 times yesterday - best weight 305 - so thats down 15 from the start but well below my stated goal. Not stopping now, going to keep going.
JRedlfy - thank you sir for running this :btu:
Good luck to all that participated!
jredfly 06-02-2011, 08:46 PM Great job Pam!:jump:
Doing it the right way by taking off just a few pounds every week.
I PM'd my addy to all the stragglers who have not sent in plugs yet (see attached). I will give them about a week and then I will drop all the plugs off.
At this time I would like to thank everyone who participated.
Now would anyone one like to meet me down at Friendlys by the bridge for a Hot Fudge Sundae! :rotf2:
kearp1 06-02-2011, 08:59 PM Thanks everyone!!!!!!!! Now the challenge is to lose 30 more pounds by the end of the year!!!!!
jredfly 06-24-2011, 08:00 PM Hi - just wanted to update the list showing that Chef Chris sent in his plug or should I say plugs - Very nice Chef!!!!
