This is an older band I recently "discovered". I had barely heard of these guys until last year, maybe heard a few tunes on the radio but that was it. I think I was in my jazz-purist stage when they were popular. I've grabbed a bunch of their music in the last year and really enjoy them

Would never have pegged you for a Sublime guy. My wife is insane over these guys, she got me into them about 10 years ago. Some really cool CDs out there too that have some hard to find and amazing tracks on them. PM me if you want me to burn you a few.

something i have always been blown away by other than the raw talent and the fact that they pioneered a lot of what every new POS band is copying, is how Bradley can sing about the most taboo subjects and pull it off like it was no big thing.

I'm not a pot head ... I heard thier more commercial stuff on the radio ,,, Great stuff . My kids turned me on to them . Really interresting sound ,, I hear reggae ,, speed metal ,, at times Bradley sounds like a soul singer.. love the vintage ,heavy reverb sound,of the lead guitar part in Badfish . There all over the place,, I love it .. :uhuh:,,, drugs ,, booze ,, a hard life ,, looks like fun, ends up sad . What a waste of a great talent ,, again ..

I don't hear many similarities between the Police and Sublime, I know you're going to say they were heavily influeced by Reggae and I will agree with you, but to my ear the similarities stop there. I will say that I don't own all of the Police releases but I think that comparison is a bit of a stretch. I love the Outlandos D'Amor album though and many other songs, I was once obsessed with learning Message in a Bottle on the guitar and it's still something I warm up with.

I'm not giving Sublime credit for bringing Reggae to the mainstream table, Clapton may have done that before the Police did, I don't know the dates off the top of my head. But outside of some indy, underground groups from the 1980s and with a little help from the Chili Peppers and maybe Fishbone, Sublime was the first band (That I know of) that brought the mixture of rap, raggae, punk rock and sampling to the ears of most people.

This is kind of a dumb argument... Sublime had a hand in the creation of the type of music that many of the groups of today are butchering... so did the unnamed bands you heard back when I was 9. But if you want to get crazy, The Beatles played a hand, so did Bob Marley and the guy who invented the guitar. Hell, the one-celled organsim that mutated to eventually become a human being had a hand in this too. :biglaugh::love:

I kind of agree that Subline didn't really pioneer the whole reggae influence thing, but they still are a very influential band who, IMO, had a very unique and cool sound. I used to pump "what I got" in my old chrysler with 10 inch subs in high school!

Gotcha, I was just thinking that using the word "argument" was a poor choice, I meant debate. I have heard Fishbone, but I haven't heard a lot. I'll go check them out. I am not a fan of the Bostones, just not my personal cup of tea. The saddest thing about sublime is that Bradley OD'd a few months before their major lable debut, he never even knew how famous they became. The stuff I really like is from 1990 to 1992 not nearly as polished but they also had free reign (or it seems like they did) as to what samples they could use and how creative they wanted to be, listen to the Toots and Mayalls cover above for the porn samples as an example. There are a few others I will try and dig them up on YouTube.

Another thing I like about Sublime the bass is reall kicking and he plays with his fingers .. There's so many drug referances and drinking 40's and swearing in thier songs like they could care less about being politicly correct. or making radio hits . not to mention subject matter in thier songs .. So unlike alot of the well polished acts ,,, the anti boy band group for sure ..

I think Sublime is much more ska/punk than reggae influenced. They were coming up around the SoCal scene about the same time as No Doubt in the early 90's. And the Mighty Bosstones were pretty big on the East coast around the same time. Those bands were most likely influenced by bands like the Specials and Madness in the 70's.

And RIJIMMY, you're right about Bim Skala Bim being from Boston. I saw them a few times at places like the Middle East and The Paradise.

I usually have 1 or 2 Sublime CD's in the mix of 15 or so I carry in the car rotation. They have a great sound and tunes you can crank up when your drivin'. Almost makes me want to partake again... ; )
